The sixth instalment of Electric Picnic takes place this weekend in Stradbally, County Laois. It began as a one-day fest in 2004 and I attended it in 2005 when it turned into a two-day festival. I saw some great acts that year such as Kraftwerk, the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Nick Cave and Toots & the Maytals. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the crowd was nice and chilled out. Friday After last years vista-tastic event out by the docks , Beatday have found a perfect spot for this year’s event in Copenhagen’s Valby Park. It’s a beautiful sunny day too and the festival area is surrounded by enormous trees and the sea. I'm not sure what got me thinking about hand claps or why I have such a soft spot for songs that feature them, but I think it's got something to do with the inherent invitation for crowd participation, or maybe it's just relying on such an organic and fundamental mode of percussion to drive the song.
