As 2011 draws to a close, I wanted to throw my own two cents in about what I considered the best albums of the year. 15. The Smile Sessions- The Beach Boys When Brian Wilson announced that The Smile Sessions would be released, I was ecstatic. I still don’t own a box set to this day, but I’ve been [...]
Here at Hidden Track, compiling our end of the year list of the 25 best albums has been eerily similar to the process of devising another top 25 list - the college football top 25. When we started four years ago, we attempted to devise a quantitative methodology that systematized the rankings and took the individual biases out of the equation, while still incorporating the collective views of everyone involved at HT. Well, that was sort of our BCS. This year we’re going back to the old school and running it AP Top 25 style. In other words, every writer [...]

M83 - "When Will You Come Home?"

THE WEEKND - HOUSE OF BALLOONS You don't visit this blog for it's R&B expertise. However, you don't need to be an expert to realise that this artist is making something special in a genre that's drowned in it's own self-obsession for years. For it's cross-over appeal, blurred boundaries and excellent production, no other album this year has sounded so 2011. GOTYE - MAKING MIRRORS It seems Walter De Backer finally located [...]

As 2011 comes to a close, the DJs of WQHS give you their top ten albums from this past year. Check out the entire list after the jump. [photo via birdswitharms.tumblr.com ] 10. Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx - We’re New Here Who the hell is Jamie xx and why is he so good at everything? With every remix released under that moniker, I just simply can’t believe the sheer talent that exudes from [...]

The following statement may not be that revelatory to a portion of our reading audience, but 2011 will clearly be remembered as the year that EMD (electronic dance music) finally broke through to the mainstream with acts like Skrillex, Deadmau5 and David Guetta leading the charge. Among the "breakout" acts of the year that you should know about is M83 , who released their sixth studio album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming this fall, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard charts. The France-based band, which is the brainchild of Anthony Gonzalez, draws influence from [...]

M83 is on a serious roll right now with his latest album "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming". Topping charts, selling out tour dates, and synching to underwear models , he's living the dream. And now, there's more tour dates. Great bill as well, Sweden duo I Break Horses are joining for the trek. Speaking of the latter, when did they come out with a video for "Wired"? M83/I BREAK HORSES SPRING 2012 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES: 4/22 – San Francisco, CA – The Fillmore Auditorium 4/25 – Portland, OR – Roseland Theatre [...]

Words by Jacob Barron And now, a list of things heard on "Intro," the first song on M83 's most recent, gorgeously overblown album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming , in chronological order: low foundational groaning, dancing 80s synths, spoken-through-a-desk-fan spoken word, quotes that sound like they were taken from the voiceover in a Terence Malick movie ( The Tree of Life especially), shouted vocals from an historically timid vocalist, harmonies that sound welded together, soaring electronic whines, digital drum rolls, Zola motherfucking Jesus ' viscerally androgynous voice, glockenspiel, [...]
If the three years since Saturdays=Youth have seemed long, then there's enough here to not only wet your appetite, but ruin your dinner. Weighing in at twenty two tracks and seventy nine minutes (over two disks), this is probably best not attempted in one go. Great banks of synths build to monolithic scale, al... Read more..

Ok. Did you watch Jimmy Fallon last night? If you didn't, you missed two things of note: 1) The Roots played Fishbone's "Lyin' Ass Bitch" for Michele Bachmann's walk-on song (!) and 2) M83 absolutely nailed their performance of "Midnight City," from their latest release, the double-album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming . For starters, "Midnight City" is one of the year's best tracks, so it made the performance all the more enjoyable. Watch Anthony Gonzalez and co. work some magic below. Just wait for the non-ironic, jazzy sax solo -- it really seals the deal. [...]

While the moniker of San Francisco-based artiste Scott Hansen may rhyme with the label of the truly deranged and demented, Dive, Hansen's third LP under the guise of Tycho is quietly comforting without ever disquieting, and exquisitely, electronically composed. As one may expect from a confoundingly gifted photographer and graphic designer, Hansen's inviting sleeve imagery of an enticing sun sinking into what looks like expansive, cracked Argentinian salt flat coaxes the uninitiated into a world of flourishing subtlety filled with flickering sparks capable of igniting the most closeted, closed imagination imaginable. [...]

El intenso resultado, lo podemos ver en el siguiente video: They performed "Intro", their stellar collaborative track from M832s BNM'd Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Tycho: Dive - While comparisons to Boards Of Canada will always follow him, Tycho has definitively distinguished himself from others in his ever-growing genre with Dive . With all of the great things I can say about this record, its difficult to know where to begin which is always something I want to say about someone whom I respect musically. It was hard to know what exactly this album would sound like after hearing Coastal Brake , his best song up to this point in my opinion. [...]
