First Monday of a new month, and you know what that means: new residencies. But first: ► Youngblood Hawke , Lady Danville and Useless Keys team up for a Pablove Foundation benefit at the Satellite, whose February residents, Milo Greene, don't get started until next Monday. Above is the video for Youngblood Hawke's "Burning Down" (as remixed by London producer Meck), featuring actress Angela Trimbur. ► Good stuff at It's a School Night at Bardot: LA Font headlines, the New Division and [...]
Download: Fair Fjola - "Summer Song" If you are making a mixtape I dare you to find a better side-one track-one than "Summer Song!" I heard Fair Fjola's "No One Gets Any" for the first time early Monday morning and it's pretty much all I've listened to since. As a matter of fact it's so [...]
I'm a sucker for a good horror movie (an even bigger sucker for a horrible horror movie), a few friends, and doing scary things like wander up to a cemetery at midnight ( esp. Stepp Cemetary) or exploring an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. Indy even has an abandoned asylum and an abandoned [...]

Mom by Chris Payne The 2nd annual Folktale Fest, and the triumphant return of Sean Carnage Monday nights at Pehrspace after a very brief hiatus, made for a packed crowd on a warm summer night. As I entered I found Sacramento performance artist/musician Mom dancing away, half-clothed and squeaking in a cutesy pitch-modified falsetto to novelty type music in a classic Mouseketeer hat. Surrounded by streamers and balloons and dim red lighting the whole experience was very surreal. Mom has a reputation for being quite messy (think blood, urine, and [...]
Although a few of his fellow band members may have left to form Signals, the Mae Shi's Brad Breeck has been keeping busy and he hasn't turned down the volume since the release of the ambitiously convulsive "HLLLYH." Now performing and releasing new music under the moniker Skull Tape , Breeck is still a flowing fountain of punk aesthetics. Recruiting a few familiar faces such as Daniel DeBlanke (Robotanists), Vice Cooler (Hawnay Troof, Xbxrx), Kyle Mabson (Xbxrx) and Dalton Blanco, Skull Tape is a full band that taps into spaz-rock with melodies reminding us of the Mae [...]

As we recently mentioned, we've got a lot of songs we just haven't posted, so we're trying to catch up. (It's not gonna happen, but fondly may we dream.) For this post we drop down to the chronological end of our queue. Frankly, we're not exactly sure when we found these, but it appears it was in late 2008. Try not to settle into any particular mood, for this lot is all over the lot.The Charade -

In this, the latest of my podcast series, I present to you a podcast you can run for half an hour to. Well about 28 minutes to be exact. But none the less, since I had a bout of running earlier this year which I should really get back into, I've faced the pressure to find a good playlist to run to. This is the summation of that work. Or in fact merely the beginning. I'll probably expand my personal mix to around about an hour or so long. Because half of an hour is a pansy workout! Listen now [...]
John Biggs, Pete Dixon and Tom Whitfield are Calories . Previously they were part of a 4 member effort called Distophia , which, had they still been around right now, would NOT have got on this blog. Just coz. Distophia is/was fast, loud, pop with guitars but with a kind of annoying McFly -esque, fringe-over-my-face sensibility that I just DO NOT find interesting. Robert Redford was about the only song that was awesome. [Video: Distophia - Robert Redford] -Video- As Calories though, it's [...]

While I was in LA this past weekend, I was able to check out some of the Origami Vinyl LA Approved Show @ Bar Melody. Here are some photos and mp3s... First up is Future Ghost . Listen: Scream White Noise (mp3) This mp3 does not convey the heaviness that was Kissing Cousins . Listen: Red Lamb (mp3) [...]

In case you were wondering what Signals beatmaker and remix whiz Jacob Safari does when his band isn't wrapping up a new Signals record with producer Brad Breeck of The Mae Shi, now you can. Jacob's mix leans heavily towards a buffet of classic electronic favorites from The Chemical Brothers to Aphex Twin together with surprising chaotic additions from Converge (mixed with Mr. Oizo?!) and Atari Teenage Riot. The mixtape also features unreleased Signals tracks including a Junk Culture remix of "Silverfish" that will be included on the US digital release of Signals' "Silverfish/What Dreams/Remixes" via Retard [...]
Quirky electronica and hip hop for the painfully esoteric. Derwin is the a one man experimental project Gold Panda from Essex, UK revealing to you, my dear friend, the wonders of recycled forgotten sounds into a colorful landscape. Very much the complete opposite of Ratatat , and not too disimilar from my one time ex-stalkee Jacob Safari's Bark! Bark! Bark! , Derwin deconstructs samples from old VHS tapes found in charity shops and presumably the seedy adult bookstores he used to work in and compiles them together with chopped up hip hop vocals. [...]
