It's been almost nine years since Athens, GA indie pop quartet Masters of the Hemisphere disbanded, and, outside of a brief reunion in 2006, they've remained inactive. But now, they're back together sounding better than ever and will release a brand new studio album, Maybe These Are The Breaks , via Kindercore Records (digital) and Magic Marker (CD/LP) on October 4th. To mark the their return, tape label Modern Country will also be issuing a cassette box set of the band's entire catalog (with unreleased bonus tracks) in addition to a cassette version of the new album. BOAT, Pickwick, Concours D'elegance at the Tractor, Seattle | 25 March 2011 Some bands wear their influences on their sleeves, Seattle's BOAT choose to put them on the cover of their record. Album number four, just released last week, Dress Like Your Idols contains D. Crane's renditions of some of the band's favorite records. Before you even hit play you know where they're coming from, and that is a slightly odd corner of indie rock nestled up here in the upper [...]

BOAT — Kinda Scared of Love Affairs BOAT , responsible for one of my favorite (and sadly undersung) records of '09, is set to drop Dress Like Your Idols on Portland's Magic Marker Records (that's the awesome, homage-paying cover art above). If you're unacquainted with these guys, let "Kinda Scared" be your first taste- it's bright, bursting with hooks, and damn-near irresistible. BOAT 's idols would be proud. [ mp3 ]

Words by Brendan Sullivan There are a bunch of shows happening this weekend around the Burgh. It makes me kinda glad I stuck around town for spring break. And for whatever reason, you're here, too. Well, you should hope you are anyway, because there's something for everybody going on Friday and Saturday. Wanna see some upbeat folk rock at a bar? Head to the Brillobox on Friday and help Low Water celebrate the release of their new CD, The Taste You Know And Enjoy . playing with locals Harlan Twins [...]

I have Boat news and bad news. The BOAT news is the band have a new single out on Magic Marker, the bad news is that after landing in Federal Way, King Kong is in Seattle. He just busted down Denny, and has now climbed to the top the Space Needle. He's plucked a Kenmore Air sea plane from the sky and is wreaking general havoc at the Seattle Center. Where's Fay Wray? Why does Kong look like he's bigger than the Space Needle. Which version of King Kong is this exactly? Obviously it's [...]

It's gonna be awful, I keep telling myself—managing expectations. We will sleep on hard floors and eat bad food. What shows aren't canceled will be for five people in a rec center basement and we won't be paid. We will get robbed, beaten up, snowed in, pulled over, and made fun of. When we finally pull into Portland two weeks from now, it will be beaten and ragged Mittens that emerge from a fully fucked, broke-ass van. I repeat this to myself like a litany, "This is gonna suck, this is gonna suck, this is gonna suck," for [...]

I originally mentioned my favorite Florida band named after a Black Tambourine song almost three years ago on this very blog and they have just finally released their debut single! It comes to us from Magic Marker (who by the way are absolutely killing it with Summer releases right now — World Atlas, Gold-Bears, AND For Ex-Lovers Only???) and features three songs. A-side "Coffin" is a driving, fuzzed-out pop song if I've ever heard one; a Summer jam, for sure. The B-sides follow in somewhat different veins, with "Scaps" even sounding a bit Guided By [...]

A couple excellent singles have recently hit the street courtesy of the fine folks at Magic Marker down in Portland. Gold-Bears are from the South. Atlanta, Georgia to be exact. They have a kind of manic energy that the Judybats seemed to posses in abundance, and singer Jeremy Underwood has certain similarity to John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats . With that said, you might assume they subscribe to the REM and Let's Active school of thought. What did your mother tell you about assuming? Drop [...]
World Atlas Good morning! While doing my daily MySpace check-in this morning before class I decided to see what World Atlas , whom I've mentioned a couple times in the past, were up to these days. To my extreme delight, it turns out they're up to a lot! They have apparently got a record to be released by Magic Marker at some point — hopefully soon! The more immediate and exciting news however, is that they will be playing the NYC Popfest this year!!! with a string section!!! I couldn't say yay enough to times [...]
BOAT - "We Want It! We Want It!" from the 2009 album Setting The Paces on Magic Marker. Sourced from: KEXP Song of the Day
Don't you just love the days when you wake up bright as a button, get up out of... nay, bound out of bed with a spring, hitting the ground running. Breakfast. Protein. Coffee. Straight into work. Racing through your daily objectives! Chapters flying out of your ears. Even when life and it's duties try to annoy you [...]
KITE IN THE AIR When looking at 'super groups', making a whole that is greater than taking it's individual parts is often one hell of a hit or miss business. Just check out rock's attempts, with Velvet Revolver missing it badly, or the more recent Dead Weather , who made it work with a little more success, (although Jack White could join Jedward and make it work as far as we are concerned). Kite In The Air isn't quite a 'super group', but the members have previously existed in separation. Mike [...]

Photos by C. Marcoux For this live concert with singer Katy Davidson (Wolf Colonel) as her long-standing moniker Dear Nora , at Café du Nord for this year's San Francisco Pop Festival, we still get goosebumps and gasp over the raw emotion of her vocals combined with the draw that Katy's beautiful songs command. We're not sure how rare this live recording is, but this show at Café du Nord along with The Botticellis, Birds of California, Cheap Red and Eux Autres in San Francisco was one of [...]

BOAT who are poised to release their third album Setting the Paces this week are like one of those new and improved products: Now better sounding and with more pop hooks! Not that the old version was inferior by any stretch of the imagination, and not to worry long-time fans, Boat is still Boat. The animal imagery, falsetto choruses, and sincere yet over the top delivery is all still there, only now it sounds so much better. Setting the Paces is like a rush of sugar to the head. The band is now officially a four piece [...]

Local legend, Jim James , made a rare solo appearance in Louisville, Kentucky on October 1, 2009 at T he Rudyard Kipling as part of the three day Motherlodge Festival . I cannot convey how amazing it was. The Rud was packed from wall to wall with people standing on chairs that lined the room. While a few folks would occasionally verbal tweet their thoughts ("This is fucking amazing," "Oh my God, Jim James is right there," "Jim, Jim, Jim, Jim..."), the vibe was overall solid. Jim (or Yim) played throughout his catalog with a few from [...]
No joke... Charlie Kratzer started on the basement art project in his south Lexington home, he was surrounded by walls painted a classic cream. Ten dollars of Magic Marker and Sharpie later, the place was black and cream and drawn all over. Included in this mural are fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes,Winston Churchill parlaying with George Bernard Shaw — and the TV squirrel Rocky with the homie Bullwinkle." There's no telling what some spare time and a love for impressionist art will make you do!

as the title says, this is another mix of random songs i've enjoyed recently. again no real common thread, running is it does from the post punk of zounds to the malawian afro beat of james msalakwa, from the absolutely classic to the absolutely unknown. ::: the acorn - low gravity ::: james msalakwa - timuonge chiuta ::: dinosaur jr - get me ::: wheat - don't i hold you ::: memory tapes - bicycle ::: zounds - can't cheat karma ::: xtc - yacht dance ::: gore vidals - fun today ::: the rural alberta advantage - [...]
