It's hard for friends to understand when I try explaining to them this absolute nausea I feel about New Year's Eve. I go out, I appreciate being around the friends... I'm happy enjoying the moment with them, yet in the back of my mind is a swelling sadness, a wave so huge that by the [...]

Frank Yang Bands are always compared to other bands. For new acts, it can be helpful for targeting a sympathetic audience but can also be a hinderance, providing an excuse to be ignored should someone not care for some arbitrary reference point. And should they be so fortunate to endure long enough to define their own identity, a new risk arises - being compared to yourself. That comes in a few flavours - there's "it sounds like all their other stuff" or "it doesn't sound as good as their older stuff", and I'd go so far [...]
The drive from Saint Louis to Kansas City, Missouri is one road. Interstate-40. You would think that from downtown Saint Louis it's easy to find the highway. This is not so. I made a U-Turn, almost heading back to Louisville. I sat in traffic on an entrance ramp for several minutes before I finally figured [...]
Download can't-miss covers of Kraftwerk, Savoy Grand, Radiohead, Magnolia Electric Co, and Huey Lewis and the News!

I'm not going to lie to you, the last couple weeks have been more than a little hectic. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of keeping the shiny side up, but some things have fallen through the cracks. I'm kicking myself for missing Matt Bauer's show last week, and despite my promises, I still haven't delivered on that interview. For now, you're just going to have to take my word on a couple things. One, that Bauer's brand new The Jessamine County Book Of The Living [...]
The opening track from the first Jason Molina studio effort post Songs: Ohia. Really good stuff.

Ok, I know it sounds a bit cliche- but I'm a kid from the midwest who made his way out to LA, so any song about leaving cities and broken hearts always seems to resonate with me pretty strongly. Thus, you can be pretty sure that the song "Leave The City" off Magnolia Electric Co.'s 2005 album Trials & Errors hit home (literally) with an opening line like "It broke my heart to leave the city...". After scouring the ole' interweb for some information on the band (as I stumbled across the song via a mixtape) I found [...]
The title of this post was actually a recent tweet from one of my music life-mates Laura this morning. And it could be one of the most true things one could ever say to me. Jason Molina (or Jason as I know him) is, in my opinion, one of the greatest musician types I have ever listened to. He has crossed from pretty much solo, to a full band to actual solo and all with stunning perfection. Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co. and then Jason Molina - the guy is all time folks, all time. Just a reminder. [...]

Chicago's Velcro Lewis Group have their new record, White Magick Summer , in the can as they say. The album, produced by sometimes Magnolia Electric Co. drummer Jeff Panall, will be released on CD, vinyl and the somehow hip again audio cassette. When can you get your hands on their latest slab of R&B-infused psychedelic rock? Tuesday, July 20, is White Summer Magick 's official release date. Anyone familiar with the band, comprised of Velcro Lewis, Hawk [...]

And when the noodles are finally gone, the bowl empty of everything but a few oleaginous blobs, each diner sets his bowl back upon the counter, mumbles "Gochiso-sama deshita" — roughly "Thank you for the meal" — pays the 700-yen fee (about $7.85 at 89 yen to the dollar) and wanders back out into the daylight world where Ganko suddenly seems like a hallucination, a Wonderland dream of noodly bliss. - One Noodle at a Time in Tokyo . . A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I lived in Charlottesville, VA. One of the best venues in town was the basement of a sushi restaurant in a strip mall called Tokyo Rose. I saw Magnolia Electric Co. there in October 2004, where they played this little gem as the finale for their main set. This is a soundboard recording, but at least two of the eight inputs were not functional (what do you want from a sushi restaurant?). The guitars were recorded indirectly through the other mikes. EQ tinkering has made up for some of [...]
