Muruch's Mid-West reviewer/photographer Jen "Coble" Hopper had the awesome privilege of catching Irish singer Imelda May's October 4th performance at the Majestic Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin. Coble's review and photographs of the concert follow... Irish rockabilly queen Imelda May rocked a house packed into the balcony at Madison, WI's Majestic Theatre on Tuesday night. The [...]

When Girls released their new album Father, Son, Holy Ghost earlier this month I was on the fence. I was somewhat of a fan of the band's previous output, but wouldn't consider myself a full-fledged true believer. That changed whenever the album hit the internet. The first two tracks, "Honey Bunny" and "Alex" set the stage for one of the year's most interesting releases. It converted me. While I wasn't able to catch the band personally, Ed Oliver brought photos from last night's show [...]

Key Track: Stack Big Faces The Story: The duo Brittany Elliott and Jessica Lamarie also known as Roc Stea'd met while working as background dancers for national artists. As dancers, they toured the country twice on the Scream Tour and performed on BET and the Super Bowl. Recently, the girls headlined two sold out shows in their hometown of Detroit, MI at The Majestic Theatre and The Music Hall. The single "Stack Big Faces" is in the top 60 on urban [...]

The Moondoggies come to Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee tonight supporting Dawes . We've been quite fond of their album, Tidelands , and look forward to seeing them live for the first time. I got in touch with Kevin [...]

[Drive-By Truckers play the Pabst Theater tonight for a special Farm Aid Eve performance] By Jeff Kollath While The National received their well-deserved accolades for playing at the Obama rally on campus and near-sold out show at the Orpheum Theater on Tuesday, another band also played two shows in Madison. Flying under the radar was Drive-By Truckers , who snuck into town on Monday afternoon, allowing band members to visit family and friends, and relax on a rare day off on this jam-packed four week [...]

Last night was a busy night for live music in Madison and Milwaukee. Ed Oliver headed out to the sold out Matt & Kim show at the Majestic Theatre and brought back some great photos ( more here ). Per usual it was a hot and sweaty affair. [...]

On Tuesday, September 28 , the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison will host Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers for a special acoustic performance in its galleries. Hood has long been a supporter of American soldiers and veterans, having written such songs as "The Sands of Iwo Jima" and "The Home Front," which was inspired by the 2005 passing of Madison native Sgt. Mark Maida . Sgt. Maida's personal effects can be seen in " Faces in the Sand, " an exhibit honoring Wisconsin's men and women who have [...]

Payton's Big Damn Band and Juniper Tar . Tomorrow night they're at Club Garibaldi in Milwaukee with Mark Olson of The Jayhawks fame. One of the best concerts I saw last year was School of Seven Bells at the High Noon Saloon . I walked in with no expectation and walked out blow away by the School of Seven Bells live show. The group is on tour in September and October in support of their fantastic new record, Disconnect From Desire , including stops in Chicago (9/17, Lincoln Hall ) and Madison (9/18, Majestic Theatre ) next month. [...]

Words: Tyler Fassnacht | Photos: Ed Oliver The last time I had seen Yeasayer was on the Terrace last summer , long before Odd Blood , so I was excited to see what a new album would bring to their live show. I must also say that I had no idea Madison loved Yeasayer so much. It was a sold out show at the Majestic , which is not an super easy task. Opening the show was Sleigh Bells . Now through various blogs and news sites [...]

By Jeff Kollath After walking into the Majestic Theater on Saturday night, I felt like asking the bartender if I was in the right place - there were a grand total of 8 of us in the room until about 10 minutes before the posted show time. With the Final Four, the Easter holiday, and Spring Break in full swing, downtown itself was pretty dead, so it wasn't too much of a surprise that only 40 of us were in attendance for the final show of the Dear Companion tour. Spreading the [...]

By Tyler Fassnacht Now I don't have the most experience with electronica/DJ concerts, so Daedelus ' show at the Majestic was somewhat of a new experience. I had gotten his album " Denies the Day's Demise " and I was a huge fan, so him along with Nosaj Thing sounded like a pretty great show. The show got off to a little bit of a rocky start. I was under the impression it was going to start at nine, however the first band, Jogger , came [...]
Yeasayer have a new album, Odd Blood , coming next year (2/19) on Secretly Canadian . If you're curious what to expect you check out a Premature Evaluation of the record. Yeasayer return to Madison on Wednesday, April 28th for a gig at the Majestic Theatre . MP3: Yeasayer – "Ambling Alp" Video: Yeasayer – "Ambling Alp"

By Tyler Fassnacht With a band like the Books , I didn't entirely know what to expect from a live show. One thing that I was definitely happy about was that seats were brought out onto the floor, which added some comfort to accompany the experience that was the Books. Opening the show was a woman who went by Baby Dee . She played harp for the majority of her set, which was filled with haunting, lulling, vaudeville songs. Her raspy voice whispered and erupted during the abrupt change in dynamics in [...]

By Tyler Fassnacht The evening started out light and clean and ended pretty gritty. Now I am not insulting any of the bands that played, but it was a noticeable progression as the three bands performed. The first act was a guy named Dent May , who played ukulele and crooned cute songs. There was also another guy on stage playing tambourine and singing backup, which added a lot to the otherwise empty sound. His songs were catchy and it was fun watching him jump around with his ukulele, but I am sorry, [...]

By Tyler Fassnacht The Fiery Furnaces were formed in 2000 by two siblings. Eleanor sings, Matthew plays music and together, over the course of seven albums, they have written some of the most experimental music in addition to some of the poppiest music I have ever. In preparation for their upcoming shows in Milwaukee on Thursday at Turner Hall and in Madison on Friday at the Majestic , I would like to share some personal highlights from their catalogue. The Fiery Furnaces garnered attention with their first album, [...]

By Tyler Fassnacht Ever since the sixth grade, Dinosaur Jr. has accompanied me through my music phases, whether it was classic rock, grunge, catchy pop rock or noise, Dinosaur Jr. was always able to fit in somehow. They always had enough of an edge and strong enough hooks to draw in a variety of music fans and that along with J Mascis' guitar prowess cemented these guys as gods of guitar driven indie-rock. When I found out the band reunited some years back, I promised myself that I would see them in [...]
People camped outside the Majestic Theatre yesterday to ensure an up close opportunity to the recently resurfaced Sufjan Stevens . It's hard to cast your eyes across the interweb these days without noticing the chatter of Sufjan's new material he's road testing in select cities on a short run of tour dates. I chose to ignore the trickle of new material in video form in advance of the show, and instead let the new material greet me for the first time at the concert. If you're looking for some good audio/visual of the new [...]
