There are not enough Asian musicians in the states. Zee Avi , also known as Koko Kaina, is from Malaysia. She has been making music for several years but I just heard of her recently. This track is delightfully soulful. If you like Feist, you'll like her (and who dislikes Feist…really…). Zee Avi - "Concrete Wall" — Melon

Where do you see yourself in five years? If ever there was a contender for the world's most annoying question, that would have to be it. It's one of those cliche job-interview questions, that, thankfully, I've never been asked. In the past, if I had been, I probably would have come up with some canned response that would have made me look confident yet humble, ambitious but not ruthless. You know, the sort of answer that would have gotten me the job. That's not to say I was living without a game plan. For [...]

I just had what must qualify as one of my most awkward WTF experiences ever. It was a true Jack Tripper moment, a misunderstanding of epic Three's Company -style proportions. If only Janet had been there to talk some sense into my fool head. It began with a sign -- a billboard of a women in repose, lying on her stomach and looking as relaxed as I wanted to be. It was in front of the entrance to a massage spa called Oasis. I had an idea. After two near-sleepless nights, this could be the answer [...]

George Town from a window up above (Cloud8 on the top floor of 1st Avenue Shopping Mall) If I could spend forever in any of the places I've visited in Southeast Asia over the last three months without having to worry about such troublesome details as visas and making a living, I'd probably be calling George Town on Penang Island in Malaysia home. Like all great loves, this one was totally unexpected. It sneaked up on me when I wasn't looking (well, truthfully speaking, I was probably staring at one [...]

A town named for an British king (George III) in Malaysia Dearest Malaysia, I just don't know what to make of you. You wear so many faces -- most of them beautiful, but each one so different from the one worn before it. I'd call you "karma karma karma karma karma chameleon," but Boy George beat me to that bit. And I don't want to accuse you of having an identity crisis because that would be to suggest that there's something wrong with your randomness. In fact, [...]

My life's motto, as stated on this blog's home page is that I'll do anything twice -- and seriously, I will, unless you're talking eating grilled cockroaches, a Thai delicacy that has "no way in hell!" written all over it. Yuck! But when it comes to great cities, I don't always get the chance to do them again. Ooh, baby, baby, it's a wide world, and I want to see so much of it. Unfortunately, there's not enough time or money for regular backtracking. Sometimes once has to be enough. So [...]

Think you've seen it all? Well, you haven't really seen anything at all until you've walked into a showbar to find Speedo-clad swimmers performing underwater stunts in a giant onstage aquarium as "Sadeness" by Enigma blares from the speakers. As pre-party entertainment goes, it more than lived up to Copa's self-hype as "the only erotic underwater show of its type on the planet!"! But the novelty was kind of fleeting. After several songs spent watching aquamen in action, I started to pray for a drag queen to strut onstage [...]

When it comes to me and great cities, I fall fast and hard. It's often love at first sight. By the time I've checked into my hotel, I'm picking out china and planning our future together. Kuala Lumpur was different. As soon as the train pulled into Sentral Kuala Lumpur rail station, I knew that I'd be spending more than the allotted 48 hours in Malaysia's capital city. It was love, or something like it. Four days later, I was still infatuated, taking it all in with my jaw nearly at ground level, but I also was [...]

As major cities (and countries, and islands, and island countries) go, I've seen much much worse. But despite all of its lovely angles -- and down by the water (technically, Marina Bay), everywhere I turned there seemed to be yet another one -- Singapore hasn't quite brought me to my knees. Beauty is only skin deep, and Singapore's skin is thin and its charms not particularly deep. What you see is all you get. At least that's where the city and I stood after 24 hours together. Someone [...]

Nirvana covers have seemingly been around since the formation of the band itself with chanteuse Tori Amos releasing a version of Smells Like Teen Spirit less than eight months after the Nirvana single came out. Malaysian singer Yuna is the latest female singer to get in on the Nirvana cover act and she does a fantastic job with her breathy rendition of Come As You Are... Yuna - Come As You Are

Sorry to break it to you beliebers, but it looks like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez 's relationship is as strong as ever! Selena is joining Justin on the Asian part of his world tour and the two of them landed in Kuala Lumpur just a few hours ago. Local paps snapped the couple once they reached the tarmac at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this morning. There was massive amounts of security there, but that didn't stop the photogs from snapping pics of the [...]

The word on the street, the air and the space-behind-my-mom's-house-wh ere-I-occasionally-crap-in is that British Sea Power may be heading to this side of the world for shows in KL, Singapore and Bandung. Now you can of course choose not to believe me just like how I once believed that the band members were not a marauding pack of blood-thirsty devil hounds. Then I saw the picture above. Believe people, believe. British Sea Power - Stunde Null (from Valhalla Dancehall )

The opening two songs of Furniture 's long-awaited sophomore album They Made Me Out of Dreams You Forgotten seem intent on presenting two very different sides of the Malaysian band. While "Once Set in Stone" opens the album as a fairy tale, sweet and at times whimsical, "Entrails" turns, turns, turns things around, providing a stubborn antithesis with its harsher edges and dischordant experimentation with yes, the lovely squall of those horns. Even so, these two seemingly divergent paths aren't as well defined as they would appear. Fairy tales end on a bittersweet note with [...]

Anyone ever seen Body Snatchers or this movie called Invasion with Nicole Kidman? Truth is: Madonna is not Madonna anymore. Not a big surprise to many, but what you saw the last years was just her body. It occurred that her Spirit from the Material Girl - days became alive and transferred itself into the body of malaysian Artist Ze! Anyway, I dig her music for a while already and realized she finally put the sametitled singe track from her "I Am Glam" LP on Soundcloud, which can be downloaded for [...]
