The young Sangoma Music imprint from Cambridge is ready to drop their number two. This time turning to label honcho Nik Frattaroli for the goods, with only Rio Padice stepping up to the remix plate. Frattaroli being an ex Mancunian, has house music running through his blood stream and a heavy supply of cultural influence to rely on for inspiration, which shows through in every moment of the record. Tipping his hat to the true sound of Manchester on Clear Blue with a smooth acid bass line that doesn't get too self indulgent reaffirming his strong [...]
Back in 2007 or 2008, Dave Tat gave me a copy of this reissue for my birthday & lately I've been considering posting it. I'm glad I waited, because Greg Wilson just posted a fresh wav file! Equip consisted of Wilson, Magazine's Martin Jackson & A Certain Ratio's Andy Connell. Get the scoop from the 12"s liner notes below: In 1984 Street Sounds released the experimental 'UK Electro' album as part of their now legendary Electro series. All but one of the tracks on this 'compilation' were written and produced by the same nucleus of [...]
For the second year in a row, Juicy & The Doctor's Orders have teamed up and put on an event in Manchester to celebrate the life of J Dilla. This was the first of three similar events to take place in the UK this year and it went off with a bang. There were a couple of special guests this year; Phat Kat (who hosted the night and performed a couple of his classic tracks) and Dilla's mother, Ma Dukes Yancey. The sounds for the evening were provided by Manchester DJs Mr Scruff, Air Adam, Mr E, Illum Sphere, Jonny [...]
The Deaf Institute, Manchester Like most Mancunians, I'm packed with civic pride. And like a typical gobby Manc, I'll happily spout absurd notions to anyone who'll listen. So, when I say that Manchester is one of the best places in the world to watch live music, I mean it. And, I've got three reasons to back such a wild claim. Firstly, Manchester is big enough to attract almost every touring act. It is rare that a band undertaking even the shortest UK tour doesn't play a show in Manchester. Secondly, the city is small [...]
This weekend (yes, it starts tomorrow night, in case you haven't noticed!) sees a trio of charity gigs in memory of the late, great hip hop producer J-Dilla who passed away in 2006 at age 32 from lupus-related complications. The three events - happening in Manchester, Brighton and London this weekend - will raise money for the J-Dilla Foundation , founded to help fund inner-city music programs and provide scholarships to high-achieving music students, and Lupus UK , the only national registered charity in the UK supporting [...]
I don't know whether I had heard Avalanche by Folks some time ago, clocked it as a great song, and subsequently completely forgotten about them, or whether the wave of familiarity and quality I was struck with was purely down to the brilliance of the track. I hope it was the latter, but really, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that Folks are yet another fearsomely talented act from Manchester. Yes, the same Manchester that gave us Wu Lyf, Secret Pilot etc etc etc. The one band that may be of note however is Oasis, specifically Noel [...]

Photos: Mastodon + The Dillinger Escape Plan @ Manchester Academy – 06 February 2012
We've said it before, and we'll say it again - as far as touring line-ups go, the combination of Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang has set the bar for 2012. Given that Mastodon put out the Thrash Hits Album of 2011 , The Dillinger Escape Plan put out the Thrash Hits album of 2010 , and Red Fang are one of our favourite up'n'coming crushers, it's gonna take one heck of a tour to top this. When the tour arrived in Manchester, our man [...]

Noel Gallagher: People always drift to the right as they become richer. Sorry, older.
Noel Gallagher pops up in the Mail On Sunday today, giving an interview that will probably excite Mail On Sunday readers : 'It was all better under Thatcher': Noel Gallagher on Britain's glory days, turning his back on drugs and the end of Oasis Mail readers - who probably believe that Gallagher is some sort of role model to young people - will dance with delight; they might even see this as some sort of rock capitulation. Instead, it's a very rich man sounding like a very rich man. There was a slim hope that [...]

No Ceremony – 'Hurtlove'
'HurtLove' is a modern proposition for a song. It might be built on reverberating piano chords but its twisted whirling vocals and creeping distortion add a zeitgeist spin on the overall effect. It's post-dubstep in the vein of James Blake in that it's airy and awkward and like Blake, it conjures up a strange and unique atmosphere that is edifying and repeatable. It's from Manchester's No Ceremony and is released on a 103 vinyl on February 20th backed with the similar 'WeAreMe along with 'Deliverus'.Grab the download below and listen to the other tracks. The Holiday Crowd - Liegt Manchester jetzt in Kanada?
Die Zeiten, wo man eine Band schon nach den ersten drei Takten regional verorten konnte, sind lange vorbei. Aktuelles Beispiel gefällig? Nun, hört Euch doch mal die Songs der Debüt-EP «Over the bluffs» von The Holiday Crowd an. Unweigerlich muss man doch an verregnete englische Herbsttage denken, an die güldenen The Smiths-Zeiten sogar. Aber tatsächlich stammt die Band aus Kanada und ihr Werk wurde durch das Städtchen Scarborough inspiriert. Sehr sehr schöne Musik, wie ich finde! Link [...]
