There's free, and not free, on this soggy Monday: ► Not free: The second night of the "Watch The Throne" spectacle, with Jay-Z & Kanye West, at Staples Center. ► Also: Dinosaur Jr. performs its album "Bug" and chats with Henry Rollins in a big night at O.C.'s Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. ► Free: London up-and-comers Tribes have a date at Echo supporting residents Neverever . That's Tribes' video for "We Were Children," above — if you like the song, download it [...]
A night in Hollywood to spin you around: ► The RSVP-only It's a School Night at Bardot is starting the new month off strong — Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca , great at the Satellite a few weeks ago, headline, and L.A.'s Bleached will rock it too. Most intriguing, though, is U.K. newcomer Michael Kiwanuka , who's released two EPs on Communion Records (run by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett) and who is planning a U.S. full-length in the spring. Kiwanuka was to have opened for Adele before her vocal problems [...]

A mostly local Tuesday: ► Army Navy , with their first national tour behind their new album "The Last Place" kicking off in October, plays the Satellite on a local bill that also includes JJAMZ and the Damn Sons . [Stream Army Navy's album and get a download of "Ode to Janice Melt" at their website.] ► The Allah-Las wind up their monthly residency at the Echo, supported by Big Search and TRC (Thee Rain Cats, ex-My Pet Saddle). ► Kid Sister, [...]
Earlier this week we rallied Manhattan Murder Mystery to take advantage of the publicly available instruments in the brothers Os Gemeos' installation and rock out the Art in the Streets exhibit at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary, downtown. Below you'll find video taken by Amy Darling of them playing "Parking Lot." The exhibit is free every Monday thanks to Banksy, and every Thursday from 5-8 as well. We'd love to see more people do the same. You have until the exhibit closes on August 8th (be warned—the instruments may be out of tune and there is no mic). Visit [...]
Check traffic reports, check wallet, check out a show: ► Ximena Sariñana , fresh off tour with Fitz & the Tantrums and with her English-language debut (produced by Dave Sitek and Greg Kurstin) coming Aug. 2, headlines the Echoplex. That's her video for "Shine Down," above, which we previewed before her Silverlake Jubilee performance. ► The Monkees' 45th Anniversary Tour plays the last of its 30 dates at the Greek Theatre, with three-quarters of the original band — Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork — running through the old [...]

More than one participant — and even the attendees felt like participants — at Saturday night's Tribute to the Movies likened the affair to an Irish wake. There were songs and drinks and tears and photos and video projections, and all of it was very good, if not cathartic. The Movies , beloved Silver Lakers whose uncompromising music ("post-punk on a new wave bender," I wrote once) won plenty of fans and probably should have won more, are gone now, their mercurial lead singer Timothy James now ensconced on the other coast. But their irony-laden tunes lived on through [...]
Around town tonight: ► Panic! at the Disco , Fun and Funeral Party play to a sold-out Wiltern. Love it when pop-punk bands bust out the strings. ► Strong local bill at the Satellite, where Manhattan Murder Mystery is joined by Death to Anders and George Glass . ► Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel, aka Two Gallants , are back together again after two years of working on solo projects; they bring their compelling folk-rock to the Echo. ► Ex-Bitter:Sweet vocalist [...]
