This week the Baltimore City Paper publishes its annual Big Music Issue , and my story in it, Knights of the Round Robin , is about the 5th annual All Rap Round Robin that will be taking place on August 19th at Floristree. I attended the show the last two years and am really excited about the additions to this year's lineup, could be their best yet. For the story I spoke to Height, OOH, Jones, Mickey Free, The Plural MC, King Rhythm and members of Soul Cannon, Mania Music Group, Disturbed Individuals and [...]

I wrote a post on the City Paper's Noise blog about the exciting lineup that was just announced for the 5th Annual All Rap Round Robin happening in Baltimore in August.

Kane Mayfield f/ Jahiti - "F.I.S.H. Bowl (live at Mobtown Studios)" (mp3) My friends at Mobtown Studios have been doing monthly 'microshows' for the past couple years where they have a local artist come into the studio and perform a special set for a small audience, and the studio records the performance and makes it available for free online. The latest one was the Kane Mayfield Microshow , for which the Mania Music Group rapper assembled a live band and did new arrangements of a whole bunch of his songs. The performance culminates [...]

On my other blog, Narrowcast, I posted a list of The Top 25 Concerts I Saw In 2010 , and it included 3 very different Baltimore hip hop shows that I reviewed for the Baltimore City Paper's Noise blog in the top 10: * Bossman, Mullyman, Skarr Akbar, 100 Grandman, TestMe & Smash @ the Black Hole Rock Club, March 17 * Soul Cannon, Mania Music Group & The Get Em Mamis @ the Windup Space, July 3 * Rap Round Robin with Mickey Free, PT Burnem, Rapdragons, [...]

Dappa!!! Dan Midas - "Jump" (mp3) Kane Mayfield - "Poor Georgie" (mp3) In the last few months since Mania Music Group dropped their first official album, Welcome To The Audience , the crew's been back to work on the first round of full-length solo albums from the label's four MCs, and it's looking like in 2011 Kane's coming with his album first, with Midas up next with his album American Graffiti . Kane's lead single is actually one of his solo cuts from Welcome To [...]
Here is a "short film starring DDm," which in hip hop terms translates to a video for Dappa!!! Dan Midas's freestyle over The Lox's "Money, Power, Respect" that happens to be kind of artsy and goes on for a minute after the music stops.

Mania Music Group - Welcome To The Audience (Mania Music Group) I was thinking when I reviewed Mania's show at the Windup Space recently that I haven't really listened to this album much since the release date, when I finished writing my piece on it for Splice Today . So I had to really come back to it a few weeks later and see how it's aging for me. I'd say it's definitely missing some of the elements I loved on Mania's earlier mixtapes and EPs, all the weird genre exercises [...]
This month on the Baltimore City Paper's Noise blog , I wrote live reviews of Soul Cannon/The Get Em Mamis/Mania Music Group @ the Windup Space , the Nels Cline Singers @ the Black Cat , Smashing Pumpkins @ Rams Head Live , and Tortoise/Jason Urick @ Sonar .

Mania Music Group, a Baltimore hip hop label I've spent the last couple years following and writing about a lot, released their first official album, Welcome To The Audience , yesterday, and since they'd given me an advance copy I got to write an extensive preview of the album for Splice Today .

New one via the Baltimore label, Mania Music Group. We all get bombarded from all angles with the flash, like a stocked fishing pond with hundreds of shiny lures dangling in front of our puckered lips, waiting to hook us. Every now and then you we to chill. That's what this is for. Nice summer jam. This is "Study My Dreams" by Mania Music Group feat. Dappa!!! Dan Midas, Rapman Ron G & Greenspan. It is the second promotional single for the upcoming Mania Music Group album Welcome to the Audience . Mania [...]

Mania Music Group f/ Dappa!!! Dan Midas, Greenspan,And Rapman Ron G - "Study My Dreams" (mp3) After some delays, the Mania Music Group album Welcome To The Audience is finally dropping on June 15th, and the second single that you can download and stream over on their Band Camp page features Greenspan and is really dope, looking forward to hearing the rest of the record.

I checked this out blindly, knowing nothing about the people behind it, and I ended up really digging it. It's got a throwback hip-hop feel to it - simplistic and smooth. These are the kind of flows that seem to come of the tongue like "lmno". Nothing flashy, and nothing that's going to pop out of a corner, scream in your face, and demand your attention, but it is the perfect song for a relaxing summer afternoon. Can't wait for those to come. For now, I stay stressed, but I'm keeping this jam in my pocket. [...]

Mania Music Group - Welcome To The Sound Check EP (Mania Music Group) Originally, Mania Music Group was set to release their new album, Welcome To The Audience , in March, but they decided to push it back a few weeks, and instead issue this 8-track preview EP, with a few songs from the album along with some bonus remixes. As with most Mania releases, it tries to showcase all the MCs on the label evenly, with Midas and Kane and Ron G. and new signing Milly July each getting a solo cut and [...]
