Having already played renowned and industry established festivals such as Reading, Glastonbury, Pukkelpop and Roskilde festivals, Baddies are no stranger to hard work and slogging it in the music scence. Commencing work on album number two, the boys from Southend have played to audiences across the globe, from small UK towns, to Australia and Japan. Assisting in production of the record is a close friend of the band, producer Sean Genockey ( Futureheads , Reuben, Manic Street Preachers , Starsailor ) and Bronto has a distictly post-punk feel that is growning in mainstream [...]

That Game Theory's entire catalog is seemingly terminally out of print is a great travesty. Certainly they were one of the most important purveyors of '80s pop music in America. Over the course of three incredibly ambitious and almost flawless records, they had as good a track record as almost anyone besides XTC for consistency.

Manic Street Preachers - National Treasures: The Complete Singles Collection By Paul Brown 'Never ever wanted to be with you. The only thing you gave me was the boredom I suffocated in' … and with a scratchy, Clash rip-off of a riff, so begins twenty ridiculous, contradictory and constantly engrossing years of Manic Street Preachers as a singles band. All the, ahem, kicks they've given us down the years mean they've earned the unquestionable right to make a lie of all that schtick [...]

What an oddity the Manic Street Preachers must've seemed when they emerged kicking and screaming and furtively evolved in the early 1990s. These were no floppy-haired shoegazers from the Home Counties. Neither were they holey jumper wearing, Fender Jaguar playing introverts from the Pacific North West. These were new-age punks with a glam sensibility. Four hair-metal posturing, left wing sloganeering boys from Blackwood, South Wales. Their ambitions were grand and their music brash (at least at first), loud and exciting. They wanted to "ignite sparks in people's minds" according to bassist Nicky [...]

For a band that claimed they would never write a love song, Manic Street Preachers have inspired some strong emotions. For a band that also claimed they would record one album and break up, they have been doing so for 25 years, being met variously with adoration, derision, acclaim and scepticism. Having formed in South Wales in 1986 as four idealistic upstarts, the Manics became three elder statesmen of British rock, a cult force with international recognition and an uncommonly devoted fanbase. A completist singles collection and a last parting shot before a long [...]

Frank Yang Firstly, thanks to The Grid for their preview piece on the Death From Above 1979 reunion tour which finally made it home for two nights at the Sound Academy last Thursday and Friday night. They do a far better job of encapsulating the band's backstory than I could, since though I was certainly around for their first heyday in the early aughts, I wasn't much of a fan. Some of their disco-metal hybrid was appealing and I dug Jesse Keeler's bass tones, but it was generally [...]

Manic Street Preachers - 'National Treasures - The Complete Singles' (UK Release: 31 Oct '11) // Words: Emily Solan As a band older than I am, I've grown up with the Manics. I'm never one to shy away from how much I love them, having been brought up in a household where it verged upon compulsory to adore the band. With all that history, it really is a bit of an occasion for the band to reach the incredible milestone of a second [...]

Frank Yang I spent an inordinate amount of time at this year's SXSW chasing around London's Still Corners , my attempts to catch one of their many sets foiled by things like not noting the difference between AM and PM on set times, showcases falling three hours behind despite having only been running for two hours and the like. I eventually caught them at a day show in an Austin Convention Centre meeting room where the room setup didn't even allow them to perform underneath their projected lightshow, instead playing in the dark while [...]

Frank Yang One of the shifts in the music industry over the last few years has been the evolution of bands as brands (google it, it's a phrase) with as much, or more, equity being place in an artist's name and identity as with their work. So it was interesting to hit up The Garrison on Friday night for a triple bill of acts who were quite consciously not trading under their more successful brands - there was one side project, one solo project and one complete re-brand. First up and most enticing to me [...]
