Wicked catchy tune today from the Cape Breton, Nova Scotia trio of cousins Mardeen. From what I've read, members Matthew Ellis, Travis Ellis, and Jon Pearo have been playing together since the age of 12; other than brushing my teeth, I'm not sure there's anything I've done consistently since the age of 12. Kids can be found as the opening track to the band's 2008 debut LP "Read Less Minds", which follows up on the band's 2005 EP "Friends Don't Love". The band wrapped up 2009 with a number of Atlantic Canada shows, and have yet to post a [...]
I've been a big fan of a few up and coming East Coast bands such as Mardeen , The Danks , Two Hours Traffic , and Smothered in Hugs . While living with the music and watching what the bands were up to, I would find more and more great music. Well, a fine lad from THT and The Danks has now turned me on to another EC gem, Boxer The Horse . [...]

We are pretty excited by our Pop Montreal line-up, so if you are heading to Pop...pop by! 00:00 Young Galaxy http://www.myspace.com/youngga laxy 23:00 Silver Starling http://www.myspace.com/silvers tarlingmusic 22:00 Mardeen http://www.myspace.com/mardeen 21:00 Dinosaur Bones http://www.myspace.com/dinosau rbonesband If you'd like a taste, get it HERE

Driven by small-town boredom and a severe distaste for contemporary pop, the Danks deliver a fistful of excitement with the follow-through of a wrecking ball in a Beverly Hills mansion. Recorded under sweltering circumstances in a Haligonian mini-mall, the quartet pounded out, among other things, the unflinchingly catchy ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DANKS. Recruiting Super Friendz alumni Charles Austin to man the mics and ex-Thrush Hermit bassman Ian MacGettigan to caress the faders, this anti-workaday foursome bashed out twelve no-nonsense pop blasts that barely clock in at thirty minutes. With cowboy capitalists sitting high on the Canadian bacon and [...]

Smothered in Hugs is a Charlottetown, P.E.I. band who formed in 2005, getting their name from a Guided by Voices song. The band is releasing their first full length album titled The Healing Power Of Injury in February of this year. Ryan Crane from the band recently took time from his busy holiday schedule to respond to our questions about his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? Ryan Crane: Oracular Spectacular - MGMT. MGMT remind me of early Beck. [...]
From what I can gather Mardeen has been around for a bit. In fact, the current collection of songs dates to something like 2007 which in Indie Rock Years might as well be four decades. I mean, in 2003 people thought The Shins were as good as it would get. Fast-forward three years and those same Indie Kids worshiped at the temple of Justice. Indie-pop became electro-clash/house/blog/turn it up, my
We just got a rad package of awesome music from Canadia and we're gonna kick it off to you starting with Halifax's Mardeen ! It would seem as if lots of good stuff is coming from Canadia but I say it was always there, we just had yet to discover it, Agreed? Mardeen's debut album, Read Less Minds , has actually been finished for quite sometime (August 06?) and it's been a long time comin' to push it out. The album dropped in the summer and is full of great poppy hooks and great melodic [...]

I wonder, on average, how many indie-bands are formed around the world per day? Because let's face it - there are a lot of them, and they tend to sound pretty much the same. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad, just that their chances of revolutionizing the music industry or changing my life with their songs are pretty slim. Still, the music is very much enjoyable. For me, Canada's Mardeen fits into the above description. Because while I really like their catchy alternative-pop tunes, [...]
I was reading a review of The Acorn's Glory Hope Mountain on Drowned In Sound this week, by a UK reviewer who had just discovered Ottawa's best kept secret. He's reveling in the "hidden treasure" aspect of discovering their music throughout the review. I know that's a feeling many music writers have experienced throughout their careers, just as music fans have come to chase the heady high of discovering new music. It's an addictive drug, that new music rush, and the crash and burn if withdrawal when there's no new [...]

Toronto based music publishing company Bearsuit Publishing has been working hard to provide an affordable high quality music catalogue for television, film and commercial use. In order to commemorate the one year anniversary, The Drake Underground hosted an evening of awesome music on Wednesday night. The lineup was as eclectic as it was enjoyable and I'm glad to have been there to be introduced to some solid acts, as well as returning to see one of my favourites. As I often do, I'll start at night's end and work backwards. [...]

If you're in Toronto, with the film fest happening, the city will be full of things to do and see. For this Wednesday, sept 10th, here's two options I recommend. The Walkmen at The Horseshoe Tavern. Here's them performing in Juan's basement ( care of P4k ). or head to the Drake for a little celebration I'm putting on. More details here .

Yesterday, I spent the day at the fair with my kids. Yes, the fair is in town. It's really been the exact same fair as when I was but a tot. Even the numbers of carnies having served jail time is pretty much the same. The odours of onion rings and processed sugar are just as overwhelming. The rides still creak uncertain-like. The haunted house still has the same run-down "animatronic" skeletons. It's always nice to know some things don't change. One thing that does change, however, is a week. One [...]

So it seems that magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror . Yup. Recognizing their own bodies in a mirror is no longer the exclusive playing field of humans, bottlenose dolphins, apes, and Asian elephants. Looks like the avians are hoisting themselves up on the evolutionary chain, now, wouldn't you say? Seems like these here magpies are beginning to think they're pret-ty damn special now, wouldn't you agree? Well then, can one of these super-brained magpies recognize the undeniable impact and promise of Nova Scotia's Mardeen? I mean, if they're that smart an [...]

This is a bit of a strange pick, as Mardeen 's debut full-length, Read Less Minds , has been floating around in some form or another since last year (it made my list of top unsung albums of 2007 ). That said, it looks like the highly catchy album is finally seeing a proper release, so that gives me an excuse to post this excellent tune once again. Repetitive enough to instantly pierce your consciousness and undeniably catchy, "Kids" is a nonstop pop-robot that hypnotizes on contact-an excellent indication of the [...]

Mardeen's Read Less Minds is an album I've been meaning to talk about since we attended their record release a few weeks ago. In fact Mardeen is a band I've been meaning to talk about on the hill for quite some time as I'd always heard their name but never heard their work. Anyway, I was excited to get the new album, and I wanted to spend some time with it and give it the full review treatment. Well I didn't really get that time until the last few days, but because the album [...]
On Saturday, we went to Lee's Palace to see Two Hours Traffic and while people have recommended the two openers, Mardeen and We Are the Take, we were still late. A friend forgot her ID at home. Anyways, we missed Mardeen but we managed to see We are the Take. It was a pretty good set and while I thought that the basswork and vocals had qualities reminiscent of say, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (well, some would say that everything's BRMC to me), now listening to their songs again, I would say that I was totally out of [...]
Last week venerable Canadian blog, Hero Hill , began an amibitous and commendable undertaking by way of the Canadian Mixtape Project . The goal here is to give exposure to great Canadian artists by providing collections of tracks organized by their province of origin. I'm not sure if each province/territory will be featured, but, if the first installment is any indication, it's going to be a great way to discover some excellent Canadian music that you otherwise might not have had the opportunity to check out. Beginning with Nova Scotia, the first mixtape is [...]
