The next sessions night is Thursday 3rd September in Boyles, Slane. Here's the line-up: I Am Not Lefthanded From their website : "We don't play pop music, we don't write music for art's sake, we don't represent any movements, we're not hip, we're not cutting edge, we don't dress to be cool. We do manage ourselves, we write our own songs, we do our own recordings, we shoot our own videos, we design our own covers, we made our own website. We're not generally negative people - oh yes, and [...]
At the half-way stage of 2009 the album of the year is Garret Baker's Fading Fast. I reviewed the album some months back. The defining feature of Garret's sound for me is the soundscape atmosphere his music creates. Last night upstairs in Whelans the excellent Margaret Healy performed a few songs from her second album Girls, Boys and Clockwork Toys. Margaret will be upstairs in Whelans this coming Sunday with her 6 man strong backing band. Garret was aided last night by Sheena Malone on accordion and ukulele. Garret played a few new tunes [...]
Ireland are playing later so my normal routine goes out the window as flash panic attacks can strike at any time. And that's before the game even starts. Trap has balanced us up a bit but I don't think I've witnessed a game from the Boys in Green for many years that has had a comfortable finish. We're either hanging on by our fingertips waiting for the last minute calamitous concession of a goal or else wishing the ref will be adding 5 minutes at the end to reward our graceful long ball tactics. Seconds [...]
All is going good for Margaret Healy at the moment. The new album 'Girls, Boys and Clockwork Toys' has an official launch Upstairs in Whelans on the 13th May. I have read many positive reviews of the album and Margaret announced today that the state broadcaster RTE has added the album to it's playlist. Support next Wednesday is from The Hedge Schools. http://www.myspace.com/margare thealy
Past Ruby Tuesday band Van Cleef have confirmed supports for the album launch in The Village on Friday 29th May: The singin' and a strummin' songstress Sarah Gleeson and wild n' raucous garage rock Mighty Atomics. If that's not a reason to show up early, I don't know what is. A review of said album is due on the blog next week. I'll try to bring some alternative news to the Irish music blogsphere now! A Murder Plan with humour! " Murder Plan are a vaudeville alternative blues band who wink a hint of chaotic mania. With songs & styles encompassing rock, tangos, Balkan gypsy sounds, blues & jazz, they mix & match motifs like a drunken arsonist in a Parisian police line-up. The band is made up of Stephanie O' Keeffe (vocals), Dara Melinn (guitar), Paddy Lynch (drums), Donal Melinn (bass) and Cathal Melinn (piano). None of the Melinns are related to each [...]

Here's my deep thought for the week. Can you miss what you never had? Better yet, can you miss what you don't even know you're missing? I've come to the conclusion that yes, you can. At the very least, you can miss what you thought it would have been like, or what you imagined it would bring you, or what you hoped it would take away. You can also know that there's a hole in you where something ought to be, even if you don't know what that something is. [...]
Lots of Gig News; Colin Devlin, Foy Vance, Bobby Noonan
This Saturday I'll be in Crawdaddy for Bobby Noonan and his band The Musicians with support from The Cosmic Sweethearts (Dublin) and Úna McLoughlin (Galway). Bobby's debut EP is amazing and this gig is his big headlining gig in the capital. See ya there? http://www.myspace.com/bobbyno onansongs I was delighted with the news that the amazing Margaret Healy has got the Colin Devlin support for his Irish tour which begins this Saturday; [...]

Margaret Healy – Girls, Boys & Clockwork Toys
It's easy to see where Margaret Healy's going with Girls, Boys & Clockwork Toys . Downbeat, melancholy acoustic tracks; Irish accent; middle of a recession… it's an obvious market. It's taken 8 years to get this second album on the shelf, and unfortunately, despite a couple of gems, it does little to justify the wait. The stand out is 'I'm Sorry I Spoke', a resigned surrender to an endless stream of domestic arguments; closing track '3am Mayhem' is also worth a spin, though it's anything but mayhem. Healy does have a wonderful voice. It's a gentle, high-pitched [...]

Irish Bands on YouTube - Ruby Sessions
I do the Ruby Sessions night on a Tuesday evening in a cosy venue in the middle of Dublin. The problem is being a father the chances of getting out on a Tuesday night is slim but when I go I absolutely love it! I have seen Duke Special, Katell Keineg, Terry Sutton, Ann Scott, Bill Coleman, Jenny Lydfords, Aortal and The Bottom Floor Band. The €6 cover charge goes straight to The Simon Community. Here are some performances from The Ruby Sessions! Una Healy - Sorry Ray Heffernan - Stardust [...]
