how-to guide to concert photography

how-to guide to concert photography A while ago I asked my friend Natalie if she'd help me put together a guide to concert photography. We each shoot scores of shows a year and have talked a lot about the various issues with concert photography many times before, so it made sense to me to put together a how-to guide together. - Overview Concert photography, particularly that in small clubs, is its own beast. It shares some things in common with other types of photography, but it has its own concerns [...]

how to write a music blog

I have some strong opinions on how to write and run a music blog. I thought I'd share some of my recommendations on that. If you don't feel like reading my opinions about this, tune in tomorrow for a different post entirely. I realize I'm not the right person to tell you how to start a music blog that'll get huge but I have a decent readership and more importantly, I think what I've done here is good. Originally, this was going to be a rant called What's Wrong with the Music Blogosphere , [...]

really fantasy baseball (wu tang clan vs. e street band)

really fantasy baseball (wu tang clan vs. e street band) "Really Fantasy Baseball" infographic by Craig Robinson I've been really enjoying Craig Robinson's baseball infographics . They're mostly quite serious (and not music-related) but this one is one I found to be pretty funny. He played an imaginary baseball game between the Wu Tang Clan and the E Street Band . I don't know about playing Max Weinberg in center (I'd put him at catcher), the Boss pitching or Ghostface Killah catching, but Method Man in center makes sense at least. [...]

ipickmynose to end (as we know it) in a month

You may have suspected something was up when I announced my final radio show . I've been sitting on this news for a while and trying to decide when and where to break it. I thought this announcement would be better than it coming with no warning[1]. In a shade over a month I'll be moving. I'm going to Cape Town, South Africa for an undetermined amount of time. I won't be continuing this blog in the same capacity during that time. I've really enjoyed writing it for the last two-plus years. I've gotten to share [...]

indie rocker wedding present

indie rocker wedding present If you have indie rockers friends that are getting married, here's an idea: get some hand silk-screened posters and get then signed by the bands. Here are a few I recently gave some friends featuring John Vanderslice Iron & Wine , Damien Jurado , and Magnolia Electric Co . [click for bigger versions] John Vanderslice w/ the Magik*Magik Orchestra at the Great American Iron & Wine at Asbury Hall [...]

thanks, bombadil

thanks, bombadil I get plenty of promo packages. Most of them have just the basics, but sometimes there's something special-a personalized note or some cool schwag inside. This one from Bombadil is one of my favorites yet. I do too, Bombadil. I do too.

traveling How are you? Are you doing well? By the time you read this, I'll probably be on a plane. I'll be traveling over the next 10 days. I have posts for you-don't you worry!-but I may be slow on responding to emails/ comments.

Here are some of the things I'm going to keep my eye out for: Andrew Bird / Loney Dear split 73 Booker T Warped Sister 73 Gaslight Anthem Live at Park Ave 103 (maybe) [...]

kzsu's fake "NCAA Magic the Gathering Tournament" broadcast

A few days ago some DJs at my radio station ran a fake NCAA Magic the Gathering tournament broadcast. It was pretty hilarious and nerdy. Here's a snippet. KZSU - NCAA Magic the Gathering Tournament (mp3) Thanks to Danny of The Pressure Cooker for the mp3.

heading to sxsw

heading to sxsw at SxSW last year I'm leaving for SxSW. All of my coverage through at least Sunday will be SxSW related. There won't be any of my weekly features during that time, including this week's ticket on sales and song obsessions . I'll be writing daily recaps here, but I'll be using twitter once again to update throughout the day on great shows, bands to check out, etc. Follow me at twitter if you want to get those updates. If you'd like to contact [...]

indie musicians' guide to food at sxsw

View Larger Map I went to SxSW for the first time last year. I didn't know what or where to eat. While talking to David Bazan and getting his suggestion for nachos, this idea came about. I asked a number of bands for their recommendations on where to eat in Austin and during SxSW and here are their recommendations. Be sure to 'View Larger Map' above if you're more visually minded. What's your favorite place to eat in Austin? What are the indie rockers forgetting? [...]

promo CDs packaging

promo CDs packaging This is one of the better packaging jobs of a promo CD that I've seen. Unfortunately, the contents weren't too great.

andrew bird at the fillmore, review and expectations' bearing on concerts

andrew bird at the fillmore, review and expectations' bearing on concerts Andrew Bird, not last week, by ipickmynose I'm not sure what to say about Andrew Bird ( myspace ) at the Fillmore on Friday. It was excellent, for sure. Bird is an amazingly talented musician and a good singer. His band played well. Their song choice was pretty heavy on the new tunes, which is understandable-that's what they're promoting, but could we have heard "Scythian Empires", "Simple X", "Fiery Crash", "Sovay" or "A Nervous Tick Motion". (Thankfully they did play "Plasticities" and "Fake Palindromes".) [...]

back

back I'm just back from a much needed vacation. I'll have more posts for you starting tomorrow.

ipmn radio, mp3-only RSS feed fixed

The ipickmynose radio feature on the radio, on the right, is fixed . Remember, also, that you can pop it out and listen to the tunes I've posted while you go about your web business. Along with that, the mp3-only RSS feed is also fixed. You can use that in your RSS reader, or in iTunes . Thanks for your patience while I fixed that.

hacked, back up

Hi everyone. I discovered that I'd gotten hacked. Someone put some non-visible spam links in my main page possibly as far back as October. It's made my RSS feed invalid (though Google RSS still read it fine), got me on google's blacklist and caused my posts to not be aggregated at hype machine or elbo.ws . Anyway, I think I'm back up and more secure now. The mp3 RSS feed and the ipmn radio player on the right are both broken, but I think they should be back in a week when [...]

small stakes at the SFMoMA

small stakes at the SFMoMA While at the SFMoMA yesterday, seeing the Frida exhibit, I noticed that in the Recent Acquisitions in Design and Architecture, they had a dozen and a half posters by my favorite Bay Area poster designer, Jason Munn of the Small Stakes ( gigposters page ), including two of which I have, this Rogue Wave and this Sufjan Stevens . You can go back and read my Small Stakes interview or see which Asian city had ripoff Small Stakes shirts in its market .
