After the Goldrush is possibly smallest album in the running for the greatest album of all time. There's just something about Neil Young--he's able to prick your heart in ways that no one else can. Not Dylan, not Lennon, not Gaye. The personal becomes so small, the longing so dear, the end so close. Marissa Nadler's Covers II record remains one of the most rewarding of the year. One gets the image of a concert in your living room. Who knows, maybe Neil would stop on by...

Student grades are due tomorrow, but we went to church anyway - we had to sing, and anyway, after two years of semi-regular practice as a Unitarian Universalist, I have come to a place in my life where I find peace and solace in shared practice which starts and ends with love and service, togetherness and open-ended truths, and a shared commitment to social justice. Much of this is due to the particulars of our chosen worship setting. The UU church which we attend is in transition, with an interim minister who has my [...]

"You moved in slow degrees/A sudden memory/You're a Leonard Cohen song" - Better Than Ezra, "Under You" "But I was caught, like a fleeting thought / Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind" - Mercury Rev, "A Drop In Time" "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" - Nirvana, "Pennyroyal Tea" It's almost unbelievable now to think that we almost never heard Leonard Cohen , the singer. A well-regarded poet from the late [...]

Back in November, dream-folk singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler hinted at a sister recording to last June's self-titled release . Following seven months of maturation, those eight recordings will be released into the world as The Sister on May 29th via Nadler's own Box of Cedar Records . According to a press release, the LP is a realization of the muses that surround Nadler: childhood, betrayal, friendships, new love, nature, and hope. A tracklist has yet to surface, but the announcement is accompanied by a one-minute teaser video, which can be found below. [...]
Marissa Nadler has another album on the way, this one called The Sister. It will be released on May 29th through her own Box of Cedar Records. As it is aptly titled, the album is the "sister" to her self-titled release last year, which was our 36th favorite album of 2011. The eight new songs

Marissa Nadler has always seemed to me to be the kind of artist who toils away tirelessly at her music and, although she gets plenty of love, doesn't quite get as much as she deserves. This changed last year when she released Marissa Nadler , which finally seemed to be something of a breakthrough, garnering love from fans new and old and critics. This new found success hasn't cut her work rate though, since Nadler has today revealed she will be releasing a new album this May, less than a year on from [...]

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]
In all the craziness of Christmas our in-box got overwhelmed with videos from all sorts of interesting folk. So here's your chance to give them a viewing and pick up one or two nice mp3s. Those Lavender Whales have come up with a novel way of showcasing their track Growth In Question from their new record, Tomahawk Of Praise , which is due for release on the 17th January on Fork & Spoon. a The Red Shoes video [...]
With a creaky yet tranquil voice that sounds like it should belong to a 43-year-old, British music moguls are expecting big things from 23-year-old Al Spx. Hailing from Canada, the home of many other strong acoustic talents, Spx describes her sound as "doom soul". She currently resides in London and calls her project Cold Specks,

Here we are again. Before 2011 comes to a close, I'd like to present 10 of my favourite albums this year. As an added bonus, skip to the end for my favourite EP. Happy New Year everyone! 10. Wild Flag - Wild Flag Here's one record that psyched me up before its release because of the pedigree of the band members. Bringing together [...]

Hi, Everyone! Well, it's that time of year again! The time when I get to pontificate about the top releases of the year. However, as usual, I have a really difficult time ranking things. This is something that carries over from my work as a professor. After all, what is the difference between a 93 and a 94? I know it when I see it, but just how to explain? So, I'm just going to wimp out present some of the albums I loved in no particular order. For those of you looking for a more [...]

#30 Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean [...]

It was a special night at Cafe du Nord; at least that's how the venue treated it. It was the first time I'd seen the venue set up chairs in response to a show. So as a fan Marissa's past work and slightly impressed with her recent self titled album, I was looking forward to an intimate evening of emotional acoustic music from two very talented ladies. Emily Jane White Opening was the silvery brilliance of one Emily Jane White . I've had Emily perform [...]
