Desertshore: Drawing Of Threes - While primarily being an instrumental duo from San Francisco, Desertshore 's Drawing Threes adds the talents of Mark Kozelek to the mix. If you happened upon this band like I did and heard Red House Painters all over it, there's a good reason for that: Phil Carney, the guitarist, played guitar in Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon . So while this record has Kozelek moonlighting on 6 out of 10 songs, they're still primarily instrumental... more or [...]

Caldo Verde Records revealed details about Mark Kozelek's next record as Sun Kil Moon today, in which he'll follow up 20102s Admiral Fell Promises with another nylon string guitar-based set: Among the Leaves , 17 original tracks he began recording "impulsively, without second guessing" last fall/winter and completed in January. The most intriguing bit described in the announcement (via BPM ), however, is that the LP is said to display "a more raw and humorous side" of Kozelek's notoriously melancholic style. One scan through the tracklist and a few song titles should give you [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, there was always this weird anti-Ohio attitude that cut deeply. Although without Ohio, none of us in Beaver County, living on the border, would be drinking any beer in high school. So thanks, East Palestine, for your beat-up 7-Elevens. It's a [...]

Singer / songwriter Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters fame is making a single Ontario stop on his curent tour in support of this recent work. He'll appear at the L3 Nightclub in St. Catharines, Ontario on Monday, February 6th, 2012. We're giving away a pair of tickets to the show. Kozelek recorded six studio albums with Red House Painters, four solo albums, and four with Sun Kil Moon. His most recent was Sun Kil Moon 's, Admiral Fell Promises which was released in [...]
The former Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon guitarist Phil Carney now leads the band Desertshore, and he's tapped his former boss in both those bands, depression-rock godhead Mark Kozelek, to sing and play bass on new Desertshore album Drawing Of Threes . We've already posted one track from that album, " Mercy ." Now here's another: The similarly crushing six-minute wallow "Diana." Read More...

Desertshore ft. Mark Kozelek: "Diana" More than half of the tracks on Phil Carney and Chris Connolly's sophomore Desertshore LP, Drawing Of Threes , feature Carney's Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon bandmate Mark Kozelek guesting on lead vocals, including the repentant acoustic number "Mercy" that first caught my ears back in September. Now their label, Caldo Verde, have shared a second preview : "Diana," the record's gorgeously downcast opening cut (a tune that somehow helped pull me out of the depths of despair around 3 a.m. last night). If you're [...]

The week leading up to Yom Kippur, The Jewish Day of Atonement, is supposed to be a time for self-reflection, culminating in repentance and a plea for pardon. And though I no longer fast, or belong to a temple, in the last few years, I have continued to use the opportunity as a chance to take stock of the soul, wandering into the woods or just taking a few hours on the front porch alone to make peace with the world both inside and out. This year, it doesn't take much soul-searching to [...]
Desertshore is the band led by the former Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon guitarist Phil Carney. And on Desertshore's new album Drawing Of Threes , Carney recruited his former frontman in both of those bands to sing and play bass. Below, listen to "Mercy," a prettily downbeat album track that sounds just about right on a rainy Friday afternoon. Read More...

Stream: Desertshore ft. Mark Kozelek: "Mercy" For his sophomore LP with keyboardist Chris Connolly as Desertshore, ex-Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon guitarist Phil Carney recruited his former frontman to sing lead vocals and play bass for several cuts on the 10-track effort. While the result of their latest collaboration, Drawing of Threes , won't arrive in full until November 22, today you can hear a preview of Mark Kozelek stepping out of the shadows of last year's more subdued SKM record on "Mercy," an understated [...]
I have earlier claimed that Low's C'mon album must be one of this years best albums. I missed them live when they visited Copenhagen but found this great two days old live-show from The Great American Music Hall. As a bonus the one and only Mark Kozelek guest-appears on two songs. Listen and download here.

Today is September the 11th. 10 years ago, a bunch of small-minded and sexually inadequate sociopaths decided to attack this country and killed a lot innocent people inspired by their backwards religious ideals. This is pretty much the mutually accepted opinion of everyone reading this. BUT what isn't agreed upon is what happened at the ceremony in New York city this morning... James Taylor performed his song Close Your Eyes on his acoustic guitar for the crowd. Why? Because people are lazy and haven't paid serious attention to singer/songwriters for the last 30 years. Thus, if [...]
If you thought the days of Ben Folds Five were long gone, fret no more. Career-spanning album The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective boasts several brand new tracks—the first in more than a decade for the band. It's out October 11 via Legacy Recordings … Charlotte Gainsbourg is following up her Beck-produced debut album [...]

evening! hope everyone has had a lovely week. mine? oh just dandy, thanks for askin... had a request for this, and since i dont really have anything ready to post, figure i would grant the request. its a lovely soundboard, and he's actually pretty talkative, which is shocking to me cause every time i have seen him he's been about as entertaining as morning diarrhea. sure the music is always awesome, but, yeah.... "pancho villa" is particularly beautiful, imo. 1. blank track 2. grace cathedral park 3. dragonflies [...]

An unusual double feature today, combining our two most popular focusing strategies: covers of, and covers by, a folkworld artist with whom the average folkfan is only partially or anecdotally familiar. As with all those who we tout, our feature subject deserves to rise above the constant chatter, to be celebrated for his songwriting and performance. But in this case, the man is so prolific, it seemed appropriate to go for the omnibus approach. To be fair, though I had long planned to take on the collected coverage of Bonnie [...]
