After years of toiling in hardcore obscurity, definitive Bay Area " power violence " band Ceremony is on the cusp of international recognition and (relative) mainstream success. From their smashing debut—the appropriately titled Violence Violence , 13 songs in 13 minutes—through 2010s redefining Rohnert Park LP , Ceremony has been recognized for their decidedly artful approach to lo-fi brutality. Over the past 8 years, Ceremony have jumped from label to label, releasing 2 LPs and 4 EPs in the process. Now, after signing to indie powerhouse Matador , [...]
On January 14th, Matador Records and its subsidiary True Panther Sounds will release an 11-track vinyl-only sampler entitled Intended Play . Pressed on cherry red vinyl, the collection includes new and unreleased music from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, Perfume Genius, Ceremony, and Tanlines, as well as previously released tracks from Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, and Kurt Vile. As per above, it also comes wrapped in a pretty bad ass cover. Here's the best part though: the thing costs only $1.98. Pre-orders are now ongoing at Matador's web store . Intended [...]
[photo courtesy of Charles Chawalko ] 2011 has been a tremendous year for Kurt Vile , and the kicker was that his last show of the year was an opportunity to open one of the legendary Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows on Monday. Smoke Ring For My Halo has been on every end of the year best-of list for 2011 - I'm not exaggerating, its literally been on every list I've seen. And for good reason. Smoke Ring is an album that seems to finally realize the full [...]
ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #8 KURT VILE - SMOKE RING FOR MY HALO Following his retrospectively mythicised split from The War On Drugs in 2008, Kurt Vile began to write what would eventually become four albums on Matador Records. 'Smoke Ring For My Halo' is the most recent, and took the longest. His talent with an acoustic guitar is clear, Vile often opting for a long and mechanical finger-picked motif matted under a musty reverb and compression. Noodling Americana guitars slip in and out of focus, drowned out by his mused anecdotes to a [...]
Chan Marshall delivers a seven-minute visual for a new version of (originally from her '96 album What Would the Community Think) 'Kings Ride By.' The video was directed by Giovanni Ribisi and features Manny Pacquiao. Not a bad track to listen to while hitting the speed bag if you ask us. Expect a new Lp in the upcoming year, yes you can get excited now cause according to Matador Records.... it's actually going to happen!
Names. Are they incidental groupings of harmless phonemes? Or do they have some effect on the way our lives turn out? Do they play a part in shaping our attitude? How we identify ourselves? Who we identify ourselves with? There are some studies that suggest some kind of correlation that exists here, studies that allege things like you are more likely to live in a city that begins with the same letter as your first name, or if one of your initials is C or D is you're likely to have a lower GPA. On the one hand I'm skeptical. [...]
We've got more vinyl subscription news for you, this time form the folks over at Matador Records . Early last week they announced their "Singles Going Home Alone" subscription series which will provide subscibers with an exclusive 73 every other month in 2012. The series starts in January with a split from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks and L.A. Guns , then follows with a single from OBN IIIs in March, and a single from The Men in May. The final three artists are TBA. A [...]
If news that the classic lineup of Guided By Voices - including Tobin Sprout (who hit the bricks in 1996) - were recording a new album didn't jar you to sit upright, let this notice grab hold of you: they WERE recording a new album (past-tense) and have now finished it. Let's Go Eat The Factory (out 1 January 2012 digitally & 17 January 2012 cd/vinyl), may not be the GBV record of your dreams, but it's a damn good record nonetheless. [...]
By Jennifer Graciano Allowing a release from Kurt Vile to marinate and simmer may be the key to enjoying the songwriter's music; the Philly musician who tugged at our heartstrings with his 2011 release Smoke Ring For My Halo is back with his So Outta Reach EP. Vile's sound continues to feel warn in, not in the tattered hand-me-down sense, but in that one shirt you picked up at a thrift shop, the one you thank your lucky stars you found and somehow fits perfectly. Of [...]
[photo courtesy of Chris La Putt and Brooklynvegan ] Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 602s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge , the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. [...]

As we've all certainly heard, the classic line-up of Guided By Voices is back together, having recorded new material. I was fortunate to catch the group on their classic return, and they sounded just as I had hoped, if only a wee bit older. The band will be releasing Lets Go Eat the Factory at the first of the year, but for now you can grab a listen to this track that went up on Matador Records , the label that will be [...]
Given the unprecedented success garnered by the likes of Girls, DOM, Ariel Pink , Smith Westerns, the late Jay Reatard etc. of late, less can certainly be more, and this is a mentality that's indubitably been adopted by San Fran trio Wet Illustrated . Signed to Matador Records , their superficially ramshackle aesthetic has certainly found itself sheltered under the right roof yet where at first exposure their wiry, clanging guitars and scratched melodies may seem obvious and perhaps obnoxious, heartfelt intricacies gush through the tracklisting of 1x1x1. Ideally pronounced one by one by one, it seems [...]
EP: Fucked Up – Year Of The Tiger
Fucked Up Year of the Tiger Matador Records 06 February 2012 by Alex Andrews Given that their last commitment to tape was an 82-minute 'rock opera', chronicling the haphazard love life of an English factory worker, you could be forgiven for thinking that Fucked Up had exhausted all channels for experimentation. You'd be wrong, of course, [...]

Cat Power + Manny Pacquiao want to wish the world a MERRY XMAS
Cat Power and Manny Pacquiao have joined forces this holiday season for a good cause. The unseeming duo have lent their vocals and appearance to the video for "King Rides By" to benefit the Festival of Children organization and Aliforney Center this Christmas. You can download the track here . I hope that when Money May gets out of jail, he and "Pac-Man" can finally hash out a date next year to decide who's who in the ring.
