Even though M.I.A.s latest album "cantbearsedtypingtheactualtit le" was supposed to be released today (it's now slated for July 13th), she's only gone and released another new single from the album. Her last single/song was "Stepping Up" that came out with a remix of "XXXO" by Jay-Z, and this new one is on the better side I think, tribal drums, sirens, handclaps, and a sick beat, but the lyrics leave a little to be desired. M.I.A. is either a liar, or she's changed her mind, or she just likes releasing new songs for no reason other than to....release new songs. She could be a liar because a month or so ago when she posted a picture of the tracklisting for her upcoming album "/\/\/\Y/\", "Stepping Up" wasn't on that list. Or she could have changed her mind since she posted that tracklisting and this song as well as the "I'm A Singer"/"Haters" she upped a couple of weeks ago will be on the album. As Will over at WeAllWantSomeone points out, this song isn't on the tracklisting for M.I.A.'s upcoming album "/\/\/\Y/\" so one can only assume that it's either a response to the whole New York Times/M.I.A./Lynne Hirschberg deal (Hirschberg wrote an article on Maya, Maya didn't like it and tweeted Hirschberg's phone number, Hirschberg responded), or the tracklisting she posted a screenshot of a few weeks back has been changed. Either way this is much better than her previously heard song "XXXO" , this one being more electronic and slow with a pretty good melody and beat. When M.I.A.'s new song "Born Free" leaked last week nobody was expecting to hear what they heard. The punk-rock rabble was a complete change indirectionfrom anyone expected, or from what she's done previously, even her video-only song "There's Space For Ol-Dat-I See (SpaceOdyssey)". Now the video that accompanies "Born Free" was not expected either. It's most definitely a social commentary piece that conjures images of the holocaust, racial segregation, or any kind of systemic genocide you may have witnessed or heard about in the last 150 years.
