Weaving his experiences, stemming from his somewhat bohemian lifestyle, into song, Matt Epp offers up his newest effort "Safe or Free" to the masses on November 3rd. This newest album represents Epp's wide vocal range and his talent for producing beautiful lyrics. In his former life, Matt Epp was a professional skateboard film maker and actor, and is known for his preference to hitchhiking and homelessness over staying still and having a fixed address. He has collaborated musically with Eliza Gilkyson, Jesse DeNatale and Matt Mays, and the like. Epps' "Safe or Free" was [...]

That pun aside, I have a good feeling about much of what is coming out of the Rochester-based label Viper Bite Records . They seem like really great people and one of their latest releases, Midnight Folly by Auld Lang Syne [ MySpace ], offered more promise than initially anticipated, with "Where My Fortune Lies," they've released one of my favorite singles since I first heard Murder by Death 's Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them? Early into their career, the one-fifth [...]

As is usually the case, I was not able to get out on Thursday night until after 10 or so, and I decided that I was just going to plop myself down at Lee's Palace and check out the lineup there. I arrived there as Newfoundland's The Novaks were partway through their set. They played some pretty straight forward rock 'n roll that seems to be influenced by riff heavy rock like The Rolling Stones , while incorporating a mid 70's garage sound reminiscent of Teenage Head [...]

Matt Mays and his band El Torpedo are a busy bunch. Last month I posted the dates for their fall tour, but it seems going on the road until the middle of November wasn't enough for this crew. Now they've extended their current road adventure until the end of November, and this is good news if you happen to live in Montreal, Quebec City, Fredericton, or Halifax. But check the dates below for the full range of stops still ahead of Mays and his Torpedo compadres, and I'll also mention that the Cunard Centre show next month [...]

A couple of years ago I had become quite smitten with Shoestring Universe , the alt country debut release by NYC's Proud Simon . I've found that their sophomore album Night Of Criminals had taken me a little bit more time to form an attachment to, but now that I have, I feel that it is a significant step up for the band. The album is presented as a concept album of sorts, although the storytelling aspect is kept relatively dubious. According to Brian Keenan's official explanation, the album tells the story of a [...]

I like watching bands get better. And from these earlier posts , you can see that I've been watching this 5-piece band from Hamilton (with songs about factories) grow into a powerhouse live band with a great album to back it up. Charlemagne became Arkells and Arkells have come into their own. This year the band signed a deal with Dine Alone Records ( City and Colour, Attack In Black ) and it seems to have steered the band in the right direction. [...]
"I don't care what happens in the video, as long as I get to drive a DeLorean....." that's what I would have said if I was Matt Mays . Check out the new video for Matt Mays ' song Tall Trees , which we wrote about a while back . He's on the road with a huge Canadian tour right now, check the new myspace for details.

After the relatively rapid northern success of Matt Mays + El Torpedo 's debut album, he's pulled out the big guns and put together an album that's glossy and professional sounding, while still being raw enough to remain credible. For this one he's enlisted the help of producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, The Tragically Hip), mixer Mike Fraser (AC/DC) and then had the whole shebang mastered together by Bob Ludwig (Rolling Stones, Rush, Bruce Springsteen). With a roll call like that, Terminal Romance has the potential to be quite the heavy hitter. However, big names [...]
Hey folks, welcome to the first CBC Radio 3 Sessions podcast! Yeah, that's right... I said "podcast". You asked for it, and after months of negotiation, we're finally able to say "You got it!" This is a new way of delivering the Sessions, so there are some changes. First, like I said, it's now a podcast, meaning you can take it with you wherever you go. Second, each episode will feature one artist rather than two, allowing you to savour each artist all on their own. If you subscribe to our [...]
