If only they hadn't decided to turn McCarren Pool back into an actual pool — then none of this would've happened. But no, the powers that be had to have the brilliant idea to return the massive, perfect-for-a-music-venue swimming pool to its former glory, forcing thousands of concert-goers out of the deep end and over to the Williamsburg waterfront for JellyNYC's summer lineup. Apparently the alternative locale hasn't been working out so well, as the Open Space Alliance (OSA) claims that JellyNYC hasn't been holding up their financial end of the deal, so they said last night in a press [...]

We have to admit we were having trouble recollecting what made 2009 memorable, but after sifting through hundreds of nominations we pulled the best for the final reader's poll! A lot of people asked us why we're polling and the answer is twofold. First, it allows us the opportunity to know what you, the reader, is into and thus better serve you in the future. Secondly, it's a good way for us to check out the artists you've suggested that we've never heard of! The poll will remain open until [...]

Ok, so it wasn't McCarren. We knew it was going to be different. Yesterday, Stark ventured to the Williamsburg Waterfront to the first "pool" party of the year hosted by Jelly NYC . Our outing served less as a concert experience and more as a referendum on the new operation in place after the unfortunate reclaiming of the original McCaren Pool site. For the most part, Jelly nailed it. There were familiar vestiges from McCarren (Dodgeball) and some unfortunate new additions (fenced in beer corral). While the drinking area was limited to the sidelines, the sight lines from the [...]

Finally! Let the Sunday shenanigans begin. No longer will my god given day of rest be relegated to laundry, lounging, reading, whining, eating, copulating, procrastinating, paper mache-ing, croqueting...nevermind. Jelly NYC presents the first Williamsburg Waterfront Pool Party concert of the series this Sunday at East River State Park. The line up: Mission of Burma ,

The beloved Sunday music festivals once held in Greenpoint/Williamsburg's one-time community pool, McCarren pool, are back! The concert series will still be hosted by Jelly NYC but transported to the East River State Park on the Williamsburg Waterfront . They keep the "pool" label even though the event will be devoid of any actual pools. Sorry. The time for drinking away Sunday hangovers amid indie-rock jams, sunshine and all while scoping walking American Apparel ads is upon us once again. Rock and or Roll. Give it up for Jelly [...]

Trying to get wet this summer but you'll be across the country from FMLY's Beach Dazed ? Well thankfully the filling of McCarren Park Pool doesn't mean that our pool parties won't continue into '09! Jelly NYC and affiliates have relocated our beloved summer staple to the Williamsburg Waterfront and joining the festivites will be Grizzly Bear, Girl Talk, HEALTH, Dan Deacon, Deerhunter, Ponytail, and more jawdropping artists. View from the new location above, current schedule below, New York Times article of what happened to the McCarren Pool shows after the jump. Ponytail - Beg [...]
While there's not a ton going on here musically in No Age's brief remix of Holy Fuck's "Lovely Allen" this video is worth the view for its tripped out slow-mo shots of Holy Fuck playing at McCarren Pool. Like some sort of late summer's evening drug/booze haze the music here perfectly compliments the shimmering cymbal crashes and analog color flashes. Ahh summer.

In these uncertain economic times, even musicians are looking to account for every penny that is owed to them. The members of Pink Floyd have filed a suit against their label, EMI, and its private equity firm owners, Terra Firma, claiming that the label has miscalculated their royalty payments. Saying Goodbye to McCarren Park Pool... The New York Times and several other online media outlets are celebrating the decision to use "a strip along the East River between North Eighth and North Ninth Streets that was designated a New York State park a few years ago will have concerts this summer, with room for 6,000 fans." ( Times ) Tim Williams photo ALL SUMMER LONG: The new summer Hot Spot on the [...]
Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com Ask and you shall receive. NYT just reported that the Williamsburg waterfront will serve as the new, premier, outdoor concert venue; it will be the new McCarren Pool . Hipsters rejoice! Hungover Sunday's can now be boozed away (again) while basking in the decedent sun and listening to the musical stylings of probably... Khan!!! So wrangle up your headbands, skinny jeans, don your best sleeveless shirt and St. Marks Ray Ban rip-offs and dance. Give me more cowbell...Give me more McCarren...Give me Williamsburg waterfront.

Thanks to Squeeky again for news on everything Ween. Archive.org just uploaded this entire show. Re-live the Brownness in it's entirety here
Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com Look at Khan in all his glory. We had just seen him the night before McCarren at the Mercury Lounge -- a show which raged on past 3 am. Khan is burnt out, yet somehow still manages to muster the ball-breaking vocal screams, softcore nudity and dirty sexual innuendos. Oh and yeah, that cheerleader is still rocking hard. Gotta love her. "Everyone get a dollar bill out. Don't be fucking assholes," Khan says. Well, sorry Khan, you made us burn all our money the night before. Yep, we thought that [...]
by kevin diamond Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com James Brown on acid doesn't nearly go far enough towards describing the madness and hysteria that is a King Khan and the Shrines show. Do yourself a favor, pick up The Supreme Genius of King Khan And The Shrines. You can thank me later, when you're done dancing and making love to the sofa.
The Black Lips Live from McCarren Pool NY, NEW YORK 8.3.2008 Oh McCarren. Has it really been that long? It seems like just yesterday we were suckling sweet ale in the warm Brooklyn sun while chillaxing in your lovely concrete belly. And so, as the chilly autumn air descends upon NY, we take you back to those glorious days at the pool with a full concert stream of the Black Lips' show from this past August (available HERE courtesy of Baebelmusic.com .) The highlight (posted below) is "Bad Kids" where [...]

Sonic Youth played the "final show ever" at McCarren Pool this past Saturday night and brought the house down with a set that included some rarities, oldies, fan favorites, and two brand new songs they "wrote just a few days ago". In all, the show was fantastic. The band was in fine form and Thurston and Kim rocked as though the passing of time does not affect them. However, the show was over before 9:30pm (they started right around 7:45), and they did not play "Teen Age Riot" or "Kool Thing" or "Dirty Boots" or "100%". I'm [...]

Sonic Youth closed out the pool and the summer last night. Some endings are needed while others are forced. Should McCarren end as is and renew as will be? Bigger? Better? Cleaner? More gentrified? All I know is I managed to hear one of my fav songs of theirs. As it is sometimes hard to know what the heck they are saying, here are the lyrics...read um and weep. On a personal blog note. I opened this blog with a Sonic Youth post and I am closing it with a Sonic Youth post. RIP McCarren, [...]
Okay, Sonic Youth is clearly way far from a metal band, but the grandaddies of scratchy alt-rock (and grandmama Kim Gordon) need to be recognized as having a profound impact on the rock n' roll, noise rock, and even downtown art scenes, with each member of this prolific, 20-plus-years-in-existence band contributing significantly to each aural [...]

Brooklyn was abuzz before, during, and after the stellar show this past Sunday at McCarren Park Pool . Fans turned out in massive numbers to witness sets from Black Lips , Deerhunter , and Tall Firs ; however, it was King Kahn and his Shrines who ended up stealing the show time and again... Benjamin from LimeWire Music Blog was there: I've been to a lot of McCarren Pool Parties in the past two years, but I don't think I've ever [...]

""This is the coolest place to people-watch," said Bryan Murphy, 20, a University of Connecticut student who commutes to the pool on the 85-minute Metro North train from Bridgeport. "People in Brooklyn are different than people anywhere else. They just look different." - The NY Times looks at the waning summer days of Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool as a multi-use venue (rock shows, sweating, etc), before it gets prettied up for swimming pool fun (expected by 2011 - let's not work too quickly, eh fellas?). Ah, the chlorine! How the [...]

I fill with rage when the haters dismiss Ween as a joke band, a Weird Al for stoners. This is such bullshit, because while Gene and Dean may not take themselves seriously, they certainly take rocking seriously. And their refusal to follow the tides of musical fashion or to be defined by a particular style has allowed them to pursue their sick, crazy, glorious experimentations wherever they may lead. Ween's live shows tend to combine all of the sundry weirdness of their albums and Friday's show at McCarren [...]
