Rare it is that we have a solo female artist excelling so wonderfully in off-beat electro pop in our green isle as Meljoann on her debut album. Marking her out as an exceptional talent, Squick is the debut album followup to the Tour Guide EP , 12 tracks of slightly quirky, futuristic electro pop, inspired by the "skweee" genre popular in Scandinavia. The stripped-back production driven by synths and innovative percussion allows Meljoann’s fantastic R&B-inspired timbre to shine. She knows her way around a good pop hook to boot. This isn't [...]

The brilliant debut album from Meljoann is here . Introduced in June as "Irish electro skweee funk" , the album lives up to the promise of tracks previously shared 'So Academic', 'E.X.I.T' and 'Tour Guide'. Squick is out this Friday. Artwork by Lisa Crowne .

Friday night saw the fourth State VS. event take place in The Mercantile on Dame Street and it was another fine gig we're delighted to say. Skweeezy electronic funk act Meljoann played one of her first ever gigs with the help of Ed Devane , Kachansi and Red ( Digger ) on various instruments and computers. With the stage already crammed, the band performed in front of the stage speakers leading, unfortunately to low sound problems. What we could here sounded promising - a mix of electronic arrangements, synth wooshes and click-clack beats [...]
The wonderful chaps from State Magazine have recently being running a spate of gigs, unhumourlessly titled "State Vs..." whereby they do stuff with eachother that means sound gets played, people go "yay", alcohol gets consumed and some chap called Peter gets taken away in an ambulance to have his stomach pumped (again). In order to facilitate such unholy debauchery, the Mercantile on Dame St has

July’s State vs.... gig sees us lock horns with one of the finest independent record labels in the country. Founded in Limerick in 2003, Out On A Limb announced itself to the world with Giveamanakick’s debut ‘Is It OK To Be Loud, Jesus?’ – a fine summation of the label itself. Since then, they’ve put out records for a number of bands, including Crayonsmith, giveamanakick, Hooray For Humans, Rest, Ten Past Seven, Waiting Room & windings. The label is very much run on a DIY ethos, and aims to continually release innovative, quality recordings that are kept to [...]
Early days for Meljoann but this Irish lass has a style unique to herself already: cooing R&B-esque vocals, electronic and digital funk, heavily inspired by Scandinavian genre Skweee which itself is characterised by '80s electro sounds, drum machines and 8-bit melodies. Meljoann has previously guested on Herv's Gang Moulded and together the couple are working on an album under the name Gland and Conduit . Meljoann herself will release the Tour Guide EP this summer and an album in September. She will play [...]
