Damn, is it spring already? February seemed to fly by - almost like it was shorter than all the other months... Alright, all bad jokes aside, the end of February is also the unofficial end of winter, meaning it's time to take a look at all the fantastic album art that's come out in the last three months. Here are 10 that caught my eye: Thao & the Get Down Stay Down - [...]
How does the word "chillwave" make you feel in the waning weeks of 2012? If it doesn't make you say "huh?" it probably makes you say "ugh." We all have a different tolerance for contrived trend genres - for some, the gag reflex is triggered the moment a buzzword is coined; others got so wasted on freak-folk that the hangover caused them to sleep through shitgaze entirely - but no matter how long we put up with these forced associations, they all expire eventually. Chris Weingarten's 2009 Village Voice piece " The Decade In Genre Hype " is [...]

It's almost summer, and there's a new Toro Y Moi album out this week. Both these facts have got us thinking about the genre that dare not speak its name, the curious faux-retro sound that flourished briefly during 2008 and 2009. We are, of course, talking about chillwave, and since we're coming up to the third anniversary of the alleged Summer of Chillwave — and we've just passed the fifth anniversary of the album that started it all — we thought we'd amuse ourselves by looking at the genre with a bit of historical separation, and asking what it all [...]

![[Best of 2011] Rich’s List](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3947385_lg.jpg)
Tweet vaso link Why not create a list that's not limited to albums? Actually, I stole the idea to do a 'Favorites' list from Andy after telling him the struggles of choosing my top 10 albums. Sorry, Andy, but it's a damn fine idea. Perfect for someone so musically indecisive as myself. Instead of having to listen to and rank album after album, I was able to thumb through my mind and rabbit-ear the songs I incessantly repeated, the few [...]

This here offering from Carpark is their way of saying thanks to the fans that have supported the label over the years. Pretty sweet, right. Look for it on December 6. The limited edition holiday release will only be available at retail stores. If you like the idea of a free compilation featuring acts like Toro Y Moi , Class Actress , Dan Deacon , Cloud Nothings , Memory Tapes and more, you best get one before they're gone. There’s holiday music, there’s non-holiday music. It’s almost like winning the lottery. Until [...]
Memory Tapes is one of the less talked about chill-wave surfers, but arguably the prototype. In all likelihood, Dayve Hawk would rather not be mentioned in the same sentence with chill-wave ... well, too late. However, his music does deserve to stand alone, and his latest effort, Player Piano , out this past summer on Carpark Records , is further proof. More like Toro y Moi than Neon Indian , Memory Tapes works with a sparser, dreamier landscape of sounds. And "Offers" is another phenomenal example of this: his laid-back psychedelic [...]
![Brandon’s TBE Digest 26 [8.10.2011] New Jams, Remixes, & Covers!](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3639614_lg.jpg)
Brandon's TBE Digest is a place where I gather up all the recent jams that are worth a listen (or 10) but don't necessarily need their own post. Here you will find new tracks by known bands, remixes, covers, and even mashups if they are interesting. My favorites of the lot are in bold . See that nifty little intro in italics up there? Yeah, it was brought to my attention that these Digests didn't come with much in the way of explanation and even dedicated TBE readers may not really understand what the heck [...]
The stripped-down sound of Warm Speakers provides an excellent example of modern-day bedroom pop. Long Island native Patrick Berlinquette follows in the footsteps of names like Washed Out, Neon Indian, and Toro y Moi in crafting a sound full of nostalgia, with ‘80s electro-pop meshing with several electronic fusions from the ‘90s onward. For Warm [...]

For our showcase this month we were very excited to work with Carpark Records to get Class Actress on board. Not only are they home to a bunch of killer artists, but they happen to be based in DC as well. Their roster, however, goes beyond district boundaries, including heavy hitters like South Carolina's Toro y Moi , Baltimore's Beach House and Adventure , and Jersey's Memory Tapes . For those of you enrolled in Record Label 101, Carpark is a must-know for the final. Familiarize yourself with their [...]
Tweet It's been over a year since Elizabeth Harper, more commonly-known as Class Actress , released her debut EP "Journal Of Ardency" to much acclaim, followed by a few remixes and some live shows but that was it. We heard nary a peep of new music from her until now with the imminent release (Oct 18th) of her debut LP "Rapprocher" via Carpark Records (the home of Cloud Nothings , Toro y Moi , Memory Tapes , and Beach [...]
New Jersey based producer Dayve Hawk has been steadily gaining momentum since he released 20092s Seek Magic under the moniker Memory Tapes . Originally perceived as a chillwave project, due to his fondness for scuzzy beats and such, Memory Tapes implements all sorts of nostalgic, pop and electronica sounds into his music. With his sophomore full length, Player Piano , coming out soon, Hawk is giving away first single “Wait In The Dark.” Continue reading: MP3: Memory Tapes - "Wait In The Dark" [...]

Движение, разогретое знаменательным альбомом «Person Pitch» породило добрую сотню молодых команд, играющих в ностальгическом жанре, черпающем вдохновение в дрим-поп, психоделический поп, даунтемпо или шугейз музыке. New Artist Millionyoung is the guy I pass in the hall everyday that I never knew could be my new best friend. For the past year I have encountered the music of Mike Diaz, AKA Millionyoung, in the metaphorical hallways of the internet never quite giving him the time of day. At a friend's recent [...]

So it's that time of year again, the season of list-making. I said the same thing last year , but I still feel the same, so I am shamelessly copying and pasting. Though often overdone, and largely mediocre, a good remix can be a powerful thing. It can transform a great song into an even greater one, and a not that great one into an enjoyable listening experience. They allow music to transcend genres, and when done right, create a song that one thinks of as completely separate from the original. I've chosen to list these by remixer and [...]
