Memphis has a strangely disjointed music scene these days , or at least as it seems to me - but I am a native Memphian and a relative outsider at times, even in my own town. Things are changing so quickly these days as I focus on working with Future Unlimited , truly the most exciting new band I've heard in years, and veer away from really writing this music blog as more than a hobby. My tastes have accrued over time & I've gravitated towards certain aspects of the music created here [...]
With Jeezy's continued presence in rap's upper tier, Duct Tape Ent. challenging his status from below and a label that didn't even bother to alert him about his album release, Yo Gotti's status as the go-to, gruff trap rapper may be in danger. Fortunately, Gotti has the unique ability to push 'being good' to its upper limit. "Harder," the second single from Live From Da Kitchen , is the type of song that Gotti excels at creating. It's completely dependent on the brute force of everyone involved. Lil' Lody makes the smaller contribution here, with a Scott [...]
Two of my favorite pass times are chilling out and Project Pat... With that said two of my other favorite pass times are raging hard and Project Pat... I actually can't believe this one didn't get on my soundcloud until just now. This is an edit I did about 3 or 4 years ago. Still dope if I do say so myself.

![[Best of 2011] Dave's 111 Favorite Songs of 2011](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3994629_lg.jpg)
Tweet vaso link This is far more delayed than I might have hoped, but I enjoy making this list of my favorite songs annually, so I can return to it and see where my thoughts were within the moment. Ultimately, this list serves mainly as a compelling iPod playlist. I concluded my first list in 2009 with 111 songs, and for posterity's sake, have continued along with that tradition. The actual rankings are generally quite fluid, as I could say [...]

As we get set for the final episode for the popular NBC show, Chuck airing on January 27, I mournfully compile a list of some of my favorite songs from the most recent season. We've watched Chuck (played by Zachery Levi) grow from a dorky nobody working for the "Nerd Herd," into a full blown kick-butt spy. Meanwhile, the producers of the show have given us great snippets of independent music that we could only imagine Chuck, Sarah (played by Yvonne Strahovski), and Morgan (played by Joshua Gomez) listening to in their free time. [...]
Acid Glasses : Linen Wall From when we first wrote about him to the present day, Acid Glasses has given nothing but an indication of a Memphis-based musician who's having fun, with a tongue firmly in cheek. From the name to the extreme-trip-out videos to this new artwork, his appeal stems just as much from an interesting identity as it does from a certified style of experimental music. ' Linen Wall ' is everything you'd expect from the productive Nick Burk, with the [...]

This coming Saturday, January 7th, legendary Memphis emcee La Chat will be performing in Brooklyn for the first time ever. If you know anything at all about Memphis rap you know how big of a deal this is, and if you don't you should get familiar quickly . This is sure to be an incredible event, so if you're in the New York City area this weekend be sure to come through - and make sure you have all of the lyrics " Peanut Butter " memorized so you can rap along. Be sure [...]
Wow this is amazing. I don't know who Star Slinger is nor do I know who Reggie B is. However, I do know who Juicy J and Project Pat are and this beat is bananas. Give this a go right now.

It's that time of the year where everyone does their Best of 2011 list. Took me awhile to get my Best 50 Canadian albums of 2011 going. Here it is, starting with part one of five listings. Starting from #41-50. 41. Extra Happy Ghost!!! - Modern Horses Very lo-fi experimental pop record with a touch of Chad VanGaalen (who recorded and mixed the album) on this record. Listen to Mercy, Mercy and [...]
I'm not exactly all the way engulfed in the rap game, however this track (produced by Lil Lody) is a total bite. Am I right? Is this acceptable to steal the riff of a track not even 5 years old and re-hash it? This isn't like Mac Miller dropping 5th Ave sampling a classic. This is a bite, in my opinion. Lazy.

Last year, I didn't listen to enough albums to make anything more than a top five list. That was not the case this year. Here are my ten favorite albums of 2011. These are the ones that I spent the most time with because they sounded good and, more importantly, because they spoke to me.

Tweet vaso link Let me be honest: I forgot that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart even released an album in 2011. That means one of two things: I was too busy to give it a proper listen, or that it wasn't particularly memorable when I did listen to it. Really, it's probably some of both. It's not that I don't enjoy their brand shoegaze indie pop, but more that it doesn't resonate with me over the course of [...]
Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's third, and presumably final, documentary about the West Memphis Three, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, will air on HBO next year, and the trailer has now been made available. I obviously haven't had a chance to see this one yet, but word of mouth from the festival circuit has been positive, and [...]
