Adele's latest album has been certified platinum 10 times in the UK. It comes as no surprise that it would get that kind of reception. Congratulations to Polly Jean Harvey for winning the Mercury Prize for the second time, the only artist to do so. Harvey won for her album Let England Shake, a wonderfully conceived and elegantly controlled tribute to a nation and its armed forces. 10 years after her first win and deeply affected by the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, Harvey has created a deeply involved album that burns slowly but lacks cohesive and direct execution. Metronomy have written one of the best albums of the year with The English Riviera - a Mercury Prize nominated gem. For whatever reasons in the past (probable pictures like this ), I wrote them off as a gimmicky electro band. With this most recent album they have proven me SO wrong. There have been a few baubles dished out this week, some shiny and some distinctly tatty , and I have to confess that from a barely-interested outsider's perspective, it's been pretty funny. Even the Mercury Prize result, which I was kinda disappointed in because my pal didn't win, created all sorts of comedy on Twitter and elsewhere. PJ Harvey has booted off all the competition, including mainstream favorite Adele, to win the prestigious Mercury Prize. The award goes out to one album a year and PJ Harvey deserved it for making her best album to date after years in the industry. It's truly a formidable album to overcome. It's no surprise that Adele is rolling in accolades this year considering the triumphant success of her sophomore album 21 . Last night, the British songbird was celebrated with her second-ever nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize, which awards UK artists for best albums of the yea. While the "Turning Tables" siren may have ultimately lost out to PJ Harvey's Let England Shake , we highly doubt this will be the pop star's last shot at taking home the crown.
