[photo courtesy of Maryanne Ventrice ] On nyctaper, we take pride in recognizing the talent and potential of bands long before they hit it big. We have had a nice little track record and the results are archived in five years worth of posts on this site. But we're also perfectly willing to admit when we miss one entirely. Two and a half years ago, I recorded Hospitality at Littlefield but did not post it on nyctaper, because, well, I did not see the band's potential. This week Hospitality [...]

Probably better known as the "Him" half, in ZoZo 's musical side-project, She & Him , (and as a member of Monsters of Folk ), M. Ward makes a welcome return to the familiar fields of his more soothing self. Have a listen below to the acoustic calypso vibes of 'The First Time I Ran Away', the opening taste of his seventh solo album, A Wasteland Companion , set to drop April 10th via Bella Union , his first for the label. The germane animation comes courtesy [...]
'The First Time I Ran Away' is the first cut from M. Ward's forthcoming album, A Wasteland Companion which will be available April 10th, 2012, via Merge Records . The new album, consists of 12 tracks, that were made with 18 musicians and recorded in 8 different studios, so one would think the album would be very diverse. The song 'The First Time I Ran Away' offers a lovely melody that flows perfectly from start to finish. It is a very ease free listen and by the end you are not sure [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars After nearly two decades together, what's their left for a band to accomplish, or say that matter? Well, after spending the last few days with Feel the Sound , the most recent release by Imperial Teen , it's clear that there's plenty more to be done. There's always been an infectious brightness to the band, and they don't hold back on this effort, giving you 11 new tracks to which you [...]
When a title begins with "The First ", it automatically takes you to a flashback of your first personal experience. It could be your first kiss, first day, or the single from M.Ward's forthcoming album "The First Time I Ran Away". The anticipated collection, A Wasteland Companion is out on April 10th via Merge Records . To help convey a childish nostalgia, the music video of "The First Time I Ran Away" is a creative animation of an oriental girl running away with her llama friend. The video was directed by Joel Trusell and the song was recorded [...]

Here at HAD, we are of two minds when it comes to the imminent "two disc" reissues of classic records. With bands we obsessed over before the reissues, they can be a bit of a let down: sometimes they don't include one or two key tracks, sometimes the ordering is less than ideal, and (let's be honest) it just hurts to see the tracks you paid hundreds of dollars to obtain as import B-Sides on one convenient $15 bonus disc. However, with bands for whom we had never invested that level of time and money the two [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars January has come and gone, and there have been some decent releases of the New Year already, but as for classic indie-pop, this is by far the most playful album yet. You have all the elements that tend to work for indie; the whimsical yet grounded tone, the combination of slow beats that still manage to grab your attention, and of course the fast past and downright fun numbers. Hospitality , a three part, but by no means a small part band, [...]

Just came across this pretty great remix of In The Backyard by The Rosebuds that the band put up for a free download. From Ivan of The Rosebuds about the remix: The NC band Summer Set did this remix for us as part of the Life Like remix project. It was never released. One of our favorite remixes that was ever done for us. Be on the lookout for their new record April 21st. In the Backyard (Summer Set Remix) by [...]

A new album from The Magnetic Fields is always a nice welcome to any year. Stephen Merritt's lovelorn lyrics laced with humor always hit the right mark. We found out a while back that a new album was in the works for the band titled Love at the Bottom of the Sea and, today, we were given the first taste of that record with a song titled Andrew In Drag . Love at the Bottome of the Sea is due out March 6th on [...]

Over the next two weeks we'll be counting down our 10 favorite records released in the Pacific Northwest in 2011. Follow along! - #8. Wild Flag - Wild Flag (Merge) Composed of two-thirds of Sleater-Kinney and members of Helium, Quasi, and The Minders, Wild Flag has certainly got, as they say, chops. It's not surprising [...]

The Magnetic Fields' Love at the Bottom of the Sea will be released by Merge Records on March 6. The band's tenth full-length album is their first release of new material with Merge since 1999's highly acclaimed 69 Love Songs . The band will celebrate their new album with a North American tour that passes through the SXSW Music Showcase in Austin, Texas. After putting out three synthesizer-free albums, The Magnetic Fields are returning to the signature mix of synth and acoustic sounds they established in the 90s with Merge releases such as The [...]

I can't tell you how excited we are for this Hospitality record. When we first run their track "Friends of Friends," RayRay and I were so excited, that we both wanted to post it, almost letting us post it twice. So yesterday when Stereogum ran the second single from the group's upcomingself-titled album, I got super stoked all over again. Merge Records is going to put it out on January 31st, and it just can't get here soon enough. This band is clever and whimsical, but there's [...]

Much like the beginning of 2011, stalwart label Merge Records is going to kick off 2012 with another excellent gem; they'll be releasing the new release from Imperial Teen titled Feel the Sound . The record is going to hit stores on January 31st, and it figures to hit all the spots you've come to expect from the band, including gang vocal sing-a-longs full of bright harmonies.
