As you should already know Wilco just released their album, The Whole Love. A LP that finds the band squarely back in their Yenkee Hotel Foxtrot sonic realm, it features beautiful melodies and grating sounds that combine to form a delicate and complex soundscape. NPR recently recorded Wilco performing a two hour set full of both new cuts and classics from as far back as 1995's A.M. Obviously this recording is something special. Click here to stream. Setlist: Art of Almost I Might Black Moon I'm Trying [...]

You'll know the name Merriweather Post Pavilion thanks to Animal Collective , the name of the eighth album that launched the band to a new level of success around the world, the screaming adoration of the blogosphere and a weight of expectation for what they would produce next. It's also, however, the name of the band's local venue and the natural place for them to conclude their world tour - even if they do share the schedule with Black Eyed Peas, deadmau5 and Steely Dan. Opening with the hauntingly intensifying dirge 'Change', set against a [...]

Last Saturday, Animal Collective came to Columbia, MD.

The impressive lineup will span two main stages and a dance forest, and features heavy-hitting names such as The Black Keys, Deadmau5, TV On The Radio, James Murphy, and more. Now that we're officially entrenched into the warm weather months, it's time to start giving some thought to constructing your perfect summer playlist. While some might look to big rock anthems or beach friendly, sunshine pop, I wanted to point you in the direction of Surfer's Hymn from Panda Bear most recent studio album, Tomboy . There is just something about its hypnotic, psychedelic sounds that screams out to be included somewhere on your Summer 2011 mix. Check out the trippy, black and white video that features a gang of skeletons surfing through [...]

funtodd : A Good Sign I've had some time now to reflect on last weekend's Phish shows from Merriweather. First of all, and most importantly, I had a great time. The whole weekend went smoothly. Traffic from Richmond wasn't too bad. Once we parked the car at the Sheraton, we happily spent the next two days on foot. The weather, while not perfect, wasn't anything to complain about. The thunder boomers somehow skirted around Columbia and hit Baltimore and DC. Last, but definitely not least, I spent the weekend [...]

Continuing a Hidden Track tradition started last summer, today we break down Phish's recently completed two-show run at Merriweather Post Pavilion with a look at the performances from A - Z. A is for Access Me - Mike Gordon's Access Me was dusted off for the first time in 2011 on Saturday night and in this writer's opinion it was the best version of the Undermind tune yet. It wasn't a perfect rendition (as pointed out by DaveO ) but far surpasses the flub-laden versions from Alpine '04, Miami '09 and Manchester [...]

(All excellent photos in this post by Greg Cristman ) The 2nd annual Sweetlife Festival took place this past Sunday at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. The event was organized by Sweetgreen and featured performances by The Strokes , Girl Talk , Lupe Fiasco , Crystal Castles , Ra Ra Riot and a host of others.
Northern Virginia's Filene Center at Wolf Trap With the majority of the Mason-Dixon Line above us, DC can and should be lumped with other large Southern metropolises. We know it's getting to be summer when the Republicans start breaking out their seersucker. As almost a two year resident of Washington, the heat of summer has become something I both long for and fear. Luckily, artists and concert promoters have put together a stacked summer schedule to get you through these sticky months. As always, after the jump are all the upcoming announced shows in [...]
The Sweetlife Festival, a one-day pop music festival happening on Sunday, May 1 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland is bringing out some of pop music's biggest guns (The Strokes, Girl Talk, Crystal Castles, Lupe Fiasco and more). Only a week away, the festival is almost sold out. Line-up: The Strokes Lupe Fiasco Girl [...]
I enjoy Animal Collective as much as the next guy, which is why I'm baffled by this album failing to translate in any sort of major enjoyment to me. I have to admit I kind of saw this coming, though. Many of these tracks were released on singles before the album release, and I only enjoyed a few of them. However, I have to admit that the sonice qualities of these tracks really do come together into a cohesive direction on the LP. Everything works together as one. The album is basically voltron, and the singles were merely [...]

Leave it to Richard Branson to disprove economic theory. Using the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland to host his free carnival cavalcade of fun, the Virgin Free Fest(ival) boasted booths ranging from creating your own scarves, yoga mats, and Converse shoes to making your own photographic flip book, a high stakes game of Plinko, outdoor beds, tepees, tents, a Ferris Wheel, circus act and a skateboard park. Oh and did we mention the music? With a lineup ranging from Jimmy Eat World to Neon Trees, the VFF proved that there are such things as a free lunch (and [...]
