The previous year's sold-out Outside Lands was a genre-defying bash with dudes like Metallica, Neil Young, Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Jack White, Beck, and Sigur Ros all sharing the stage. Needless to say our boys over at Superfly Presents had a feat in front of them if they hoped to reach any new milestones in 2013. Can they deliver? Well, it sure looks that way ... while Metallica are true legends in their genre, it's tough to compete with the scale and catalogue of Sir Paul McCartney. Paul just confirmed that in addition to his already-hectic [...]

Additional contributions to this article by Dakin Hardwick. All photos by Jonathan Pirro except where noted. Saturday dawns with nary a clue that the fog and mist are clearing, and the massive greenery of Golden Gate Park continues to beckon to those who would walk onto its already-heavily-trodden surface, tickets in hand and heads held [...]
The 5th annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival of 2012 will likely be remembered for two main things: the amazing line-up of artists and bands, and the entrenched, thick fog accompanied by relentless chilly winds. Yet, in the end, the music won over Nature, hands down. The festival's closing show Sunday night by [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
Who would've ever thought we'd see Geographer, Norah Jones, and Metallica share stage space at a festival. But we did, and the experience was truly unique.

photos by Amoreena Lucero Metallica / Sigur Ros at Outside Lands - 8/11/12 Metallica 's headlining set on Saturday featured lots of the band's classic material ("Master of Puppets," "Ride the Lightning," "Creeping Death") paired with a fair amount of pyro and endless shout-outs to San Francisco. "We're very grateful to be playing in the backyard of the greatest city," said frontman James Hetfield. He also noted that a friend [...]
In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
Stereogum Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year's Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White's impromptu set in the midst of the trees, [...]

YEAHHH. The Hetfield "YEAHH" and "HUGGHH" count was high as cartoon band Metallica closed the main stage on Saturday with a two hour set of the band's classic material. The swells of fog and mist provided a dreamlike backdrop for Icelandic vets Sigur Ros's stunning set. The Kills' Allison Mosshart gets an A+ for effort (and flailing) for trying to get the semi-disinterested crew of front-of-the-main-stage-assemb eled Metallica fans engaged in their set. Big Boi made good on a MacArthurian promise to return after "technical [...]
Another day, another 40,000 fans and two dozen bands. Unlike Friday's EDM, rock and singer-songwriter heavy lineup, today focused more on more pop and indie rock (with the exception of Metallica , of course, who are as hard rock as any band at the festival). Early on, I bounced around from stage to stage catching a few indie buzz-bands. Animal Kingdom , the British three-piece known for their track "Strange Attractor" played a short but fun set with lots of interaction with the fans between songs. San Francisco's own Geographer put on [...]
