Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record

Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars It's been a good five years since we've heard from Canadians Broken Social Scene , and with their return, news comes that the large entourage has dwindled to a merry band of six (now with even more guests!).  How would the departure, or lack of involvement of key members, play out on the band's new album, Forgiveness Rock Record ?  Honestly, this album will be a divisive one, at least it looks that way now.  Some will find they [...]

Metric Win Best Alternative Album Juno Award, Praise Canada's Music Community Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Metric 's breakthrough record 'Fantasies' won Alternative Album of the Year at the 2010 Juno Awards Saturday night, their first win after three nominations. The Toronto dance-rock quartet is up for two more awards during Sunday night's televised ceremony, including Songwriter of the Year and Group of the Year. "Awards are an interesting thing," singer Emily Haines said backstage. "It's great that everyone gets together but most musicians just want [...]

Metric Earned Their Juno Award Nods Independently

Metric Earned Their Juno Award Nods Independently Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Metric guitarist/co-founder Jimmy Shaw says it's a good time to be an independent music-maker. When it came time for the Toronto-based synth-rock heroes to make their fourth record, 'Fantasies,' the band turned down offers from majors and indies alike. Rather than work for a label, Shaw explains, they took a moment, put their heads together and with the help of their manager, set out to do it all on their own. 'Fantasies' was self-released internationally [...]

Concert Review: Metric with Codeine Velvet Club and Nico Vega - Fox Theater, Oakland, CA - 3/24/2010

Like the retail biz, the location you hear an act makes all the difference.

Metric Takes Over the Showbox SoDo

Metric ::: by James Bailey on assignment for SOTS I’m not going to look you in the eye and lie to you. I’m not going to sit here and pretend to understand when I don’t, but I’m trying. My second glimpse at Metric wasn’t under the most ideal of circumstances; it was a sold-out show at the [...]

Show Review: Metric, Codeine Velvet Club and Nico Vega at the Fox Oakland, 3/24/10

Wellll, damn. If I wasn't worshiping at the shrine of Metric already, last night's show at the Fox Theater easily convinced me: this band is fierce and invincible. Their live set was a tight performance; it seems doubtful that there was more than a moment where they didn't hold the audience firmly in their grasp. [...]

Our 30 Favorite Photos from SXSW 2010

While the photos on this post are all by David Price, he's in Vegas this week, so all the text here is simply an ... Editor's Note: Our photographer, David Price, dealt with inconsistent lighting, security that weren't all on the same page, a lack of photo pits, and plenty of cameras in his face to [...]

Metric Open for Muse, Cover Neil Young at SXSW

Metric Open for Muse, Cover Neil Young at SXSW Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Metric made the most of their opening slot for Muse on Friday night at Stubb's Bar-B-Q, churning out a set of mostly synth pop that showcased frontwoman Emily Haines ' love for dancing and all-around stage versatility. The set drew heavily from 2009's 'Fantasies,' with Haines wasting no time in conjuring up the hammer imagery of 'Help I'm Alive,' pumping her fist during the song's infectious line "Beating like a hammer." But it was when the band briefly paused [...]

SXSW 2010: Metric

SXSW 2010: Metric Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Canada When it came time for Toronto vedettes Metric to make their fourth record, rather than sign with a major, the synth-rock indie icons did it on their own. The band's self-released 'Fantasies' was shortlisted for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize and earned them several Juno nominations, including group of the year, alongside special gigs like the recent all-star Neil Young [...]

Metric – Sick Muse

Sick Muse - Metric
I haven't listened to Metric in months.  I didn't really fall in love in love with their last album.  After waking up to this song this morning, I've decided it may be time to re-evaluate certain life-decisions I've made.  Sick Muse was the 3rd single released in support of  Metric's fourth full-length effort Fantasies, which hit [...]

Broken Social Scene Reveal New Album Details

Broken Social Scene Reveal New Album Details Filed under: New Music , Canada Broken Social Scene 's rabidly anticipated new album may not have a title yet, but it's finally got a release date: May 4, 2010. It's been almost five years since their self-titled third album and in the intervening years many members of the Toronto collective have gone on to great success with solo efforts and assorted outside projects while Broken Social Scene's breakthrough album 'You Forgot It In People' was remembered on many a decade-end list. But [...]

Nelly Furtado, Metric, Rush and More Help Raise Millions at Canada for Haiti Telethon

Nelly Furtado, Metric, Rush and More Help Raise Millions at Canada for Haiti Telethon Filed under: News , Canada Canadians reinforced their reputation as a compassionate people on Friday night as the country's Canada for Haiti telethon -- which aired across all the national stations just prior to the US-based Hope for Haiti Now -- raised money and awareness for the earthquake-shattered island nation. Lacking some of the glitz and polish of its American counterpart, the extraordinary event still boasted several big Canadian celebrities. Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, Will Arnett and movie directors Jason Reitman and James Cameron made their pleas [...]

Metric remixed

When Metric released 'Fantasies' back in April I was convinced it would easily make my top albums of 2009 list, an opinion that was fortified by a superb performance by the band at Rock En Seine. Sadly, I did not get as much from the album as I would have liked to in the long run. [...]

Metric – Palladium – 12/2/09

Metric – Palladium – 12/2/09   Metric came to Dallas and rocked out the Palladium in a very tight, brisk set that seemingly entertained everyone to their heart's content.   Rapidly moving between energetic songs, the charismatic Emily Haines easily engaged the audience and kept things moving right along.  For the full review, all the live shots and sample MP3s of two pretty great Metric tracks, hit the jump.  But before I go into that, allow me to take a minute to ask all you girls to stop wearing your giant purses to crowded shows.  Leave those ridiculous bastards in the car or bring a [...]

Metric Fantasies Live From Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club

After a relentless tour in support of the 2005 album Live It Out , the members of Metric scattered to work on their own projects. The solo work of frontwoman Emily Haines sounded significantly bleaker than Metric's music, written after a period of personal loss and sadness. But in March 2008, Haines was on stage, in the middle of a live solo performance, when she had an epiphany: She was tired of being sad. While playing "Doctor Blind," one of the standout cuts from her gloomy but beautiful album Knives Don't Have Your Back , Haines [...]

Daily Diversion No. 1 - Metric

Daily Diversion No. 1 - Metric Three reasons to see Metric at Cubby Bear tonight… 1. Better known for their stint in Canadian super collective Broken Social Scene , singer Emily Haines and guitarist Jimmy Shaw are the backbone of the band Metric. Its fourth album Fantasies is one of the better ones released in 2009. 2. The Canadian indie pop quartet will have you shaking those hips to songs new and old such as “Dead Disco” and “Gold Gun Girls,” if you choose to [...]

And All The Rest Part 3

And All The Rest Part 3 I can't say I absolutely loved Metric's latest album as a whole... Even though the album was a synthesizing indie rock pop fest and certainly their best album to date. Unfortunately for me only 3 songs on this 10 track album have made it onto the ipod (Help I'm Alive, Collect Call & Gimme Sympathy) the rest I was left feeling a bit bored with. However, those 3 songs are really quite good, they stick to you and play over and over in your head... Addictive and I love it. As for Collect Call , [...]

Best Canadian Songs of 2009

Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling On A Line
Filed under: The Hit List , Canada 2009 was another typically diverse year for Canadian music, with standout songs running the gamut from spooky blues and booty beats to post-hardcore screamo and heart-pounding electro. Even our rap stars ranged from promoting perseverance to declaring ambivalence. But what these songs have in common is an innate greatness that should see them remain in playlists well into the next year, if not decade. Here's our list of the ten best Canadian songs of 2009.
