Three years after her 'Honey from the Tombs' solo debut, Millan returns with 'Masters of the Burial,' which features a mix of carefully-chosen covers -- including songs by Death Cab for Cutie and Sarah Harmer -- and Millan's own hushed, alt-country-inflected tunes. Thanks to her distinctive voice [...]
Is it getting hot in here? Check out the new video "Games for Days" by Julian Plenti (aka Paul Banks of Interpol ). And who's the little lady in the video? None other than Emily Haines (from Broken Social Scene and Metric ). It's filmed at the slightly sketchy Waverly Hotel in Toronto.
Interpol's Paul Banks released his Julian Plenti solo project this week (review here), now we get a video for the lead single "Games For Days". And look who's joined him. Why it's good old Canadian girl Emily Haines of Metric.Watch the pair get all kinky here:Julian Plenti's websiteJulian Plenti's Myspace
When he's not playing ping-pong in leisure attire with bulbous women adorning his side, Julian Plenti has time to cavort around with Metric's Emily Haines in this cinematic video for "Games for Days" off Julian Plenti Is...Skyscraper , which hit stores this past Tuesday via Matador .

I love going to music festivals. I also love free. Free music festivals within a 30mi radius of me = no-brainer. This was my second free festival this summer ( see Tom Williams’ Siren Festival Review ). God bless you, failing economy! The Host (C+) WFNX seemed to be a little all over the place. They didn’t get back to us in time for press pass info, so I tried to get one on my own. The poor girl at the [...]

Or, perhaps, even more accurate, shame on me. I haven't written a post in a month! I could give excuses about how I've been hard at work, slaving away as Assistant Director on an amazing play co-produced by Furious Theatre Company and the Theatre @ Boston Court currently running in Pasadena... but I won't. I'll just say that things have been hectic. So hectic in fact, Monday nights have been my only nights off this summer. So I, along with a few of my friends from work, decided to begin [...]

This week's Live Friday features a session from the band Metric. In case you're not aware, Metric is the band fronted by Emily Haines, who you may know from her roles in both Broken Social Scene as well as her own solo project. But Metric came before them all, and continues to co-exist with all of them to this day. Metric released their latest album "Fantasies" back in mid-April, and myself as well as many other remarked that it's the band's strongest to date, harnessing the full power of the band through creative melodies that simultaneously energize and addict. Call [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. It's not often I'm reduced to calling a song the summer jam, but Metic's "Help, I'm Alive" has just about become the de facto jam. Metric's performance for Letterman isn't all that great, it seems like they kinda phoned in the performance. Well, Emily Haines seems to anyways. Still, just listen to way hammer rolls off her tongue. It's like she turns the word hammer into two distinct words. But the emotion of the song is what truly resonates. That [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Between the Notes , Canada To mark the launch of Spinner Canada, we're doing an in-depth series on the Canadian indie music scene that has taken the world by storm in recent years. In Part I , we explored the foundation laid for Canada's music scene in the 1980s and '90s. This week, we examine this decade's explosion, beginning with Toronto and continuing in Montreal, with Calgary's Feist making an appearance in a post all her own. Next week, Part III looks towards the [...]

July 11. Just want to say, thank you for that beautiful, beautiful show. That was a dream. The weather turned out to be all right... the lake, the winds blowing, the canopies to our right. There were moments when I thought this was it. Everything, all. The songs we got caught in, the allusions in our letters and still, we accept and will always accept the choices. And last night felt a little something like a really good trip and you don't want to leave that soft hotel bed or that view from the veranda, so [...]
I think you all knew that ATH would go here at some point and alas today is the day that I take the leap and display our true male hormone driven selves with a top 5 about the hot ladies of indie rock. I won't beat around the bush here, this post has little to do with the musical talents of these ladies, and more to do with how they drive me crazy with their good looks. I promise not to offend anyone and also promise that these women have made my list because they are empowered and [...]

Drizzly skies and six dollar Newcastle's could not deter loyal fans of Metric from the Ogden on the night of the 11th. Openers Sebastien Grainger and The Mountains gave the crowd a rock frenzy of distorting guitars with a dose of dance friendly numbers, contradicting to his My Space page that describes his sound as healing and easy listening. Next up was Metric, hailing from Toronto they supplied the all-ages crowd with a long energetic set taking no time at all to smash into their current single Help I'm Alive [...]

TLC last caught Metric at All Points West 2008 where Emily Haines & co. totally killed and won over the festival crowd. Since then the band returned with new album, Fantasies , and a tour that is calling at Terminal 5 in NYC on June 17. If you're in London, don't miss Metric perform at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park. All tour dates HERE . In celebration of Metric's grand return, we are giving away 2 limited edition vinyl copies of [...]

Emily Haines at SXSW 2007. I heard this song in Club Monaco (?) the other day and thought I must have passed off "Fantasies," the band's upcoming LP, too quickly, because it's quite lovely, and reminded me of the Matthew Good song "Pledge of Allegiance," which I've also posted below. Hey, they're both Canadian. Emily Haines also released a solo album with her band, The Soft Skeleton, in 2006 ( I reviewed it on Stylus ). Her father had just died and the songs are quite personal and depressing, but beautifully composed. Metric are louder [...]
alex p. This week I realized the horrible coincidence of Regina Spektor and Metric playing on the very same evening in Manhattan. It's yet to be confirmed if Regina will play any added NYC dates which has led me into one of the world's quandaries: Regina Spektor or Emily Haines. I figure the only way to settle this is an ultimate pros and cons list so we're gonna break this down sandlot style. The categories will be Track Catalog , Live Performance [...]

If I stumble, they're gonna eat me alive Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer? From New York's Metric , their new album Fantasies takes the listener through an experimental visual and emotional documentary of singer Emily Haines soul-searching sojourn in Buenos Aires. The single "Help, I'm Alive" was the first song completed and showcases the simple fragility of anxiety and indecision, within simple lyrics that meaningfully present Emily's mind set. LISTEN [...]
