Condensing an entire year of music that you’ve listened to is an absolutely impossible task. And yet, it’s so tempting to gaze at the year that hasn’t even gone and attempt to squash it all into one post. At the same time, end of year lists are exceptionally popular, and yet all anyone seems to do is complain about them. “What the hell? I was expecting your top 50 to be exactly the same as mine!”. Which, blatantly, is a ridiculous way to look at things. Personally, I think that end of year lists are more than a romantic glance [...]

Emily Haines of Metric ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth It takes balls to come on stage to the Carmina Burana. I mean really?! Who can do that in a legit manner without a heavy dose of irony? Maybe the WWF's Undertaker can pull it off. But Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars? Not [...]

Check out my photos of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas Night 2 over at OC Weekly . My review of both nights is also on OC Weekly .

Subjective as the day is long, personal as a Hot Topic tweens diary, debatable as Tiger Woods' personal life (dig the instantly dated pop culture reference folded into year-end lists), our rundown of the top songs from 2009 are simply the ones that rocked us the hardest this past year. From deep cuts to ubiquitous food court jams, little-known faves to cultural icons, these are not "singles" in the traditional sense (except in a few cases) but rather a list of our favorites, and damn if that shouldn't count for something. So let's get to the [...]
It was a great year for music, in my opinion. Here's a list of albums and songs that I loved this year. If you haven't previously heard something on the list, take a chance and give it a listen. And please, let me know some of your own favorites in ...
We have to start this list off with a disclaimer. We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit. Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an "end all be all" to the question of what were the best songs of 2009. That being said, we like our list quite a bit. Sure, it's got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius. We've got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]
Well, we're 3 months in to our Best of 2009 Reader's Poll, and I think it's pretty obvious who you folks think had the record of the year: The xx. Phoenix was very close, but still a few votes shy of the London trio's top spot. I was originally going to close the voting on the 15th of November, but I thought there might be a last minute shakeup. Nope. The boys & girls of The xx held on like real champs. The final results: The XX - XX 16% Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix [...]

The Reader's Poll results haven't changed too much for the past few weeks, but I realized I hadn't given any statistics on the write-in poll. As 14% of the total votes have been for write-in answers, I thought I might be giving some folks the shaft by not calculating the results. Unquestionably, the funnest part of that was reading all the creative spelling choices for Merriweather Post Pavilion . That, and the clever soul that took the time to write 'None'. These are ear ticklers, don the headsets mates and let them do their magic. Phoenix - Armistice (YACHT Remix) Phoenix-Rome (Neighbours with Devendra Branhart)

Phoenix, the current French electropop band du jour thrilled a sold out Greek Theatre on Wednesday with a one hour musical equivalent of eating an entire can of cake frosting with a spoon. At first it's good, then you start to feel a little sick, you smoke some pot with the person sitting next to you, it starts to become enjoyable again, and then by the time you're finished, you realize that you're left both full and hungry at the same time.
