Following an 18-year hiatus, soul singer Bobby Womack returns to top this week's list of new releases with The Bravest Man In The Universe , which easily ranks among the legendary singer's best albums to date. Following the approach he took with the late Gil Scott-Heron’s excellent final record, producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell, along with co-producer and Blur/Gorillaz-leader Damon Albarn, adds moody electronics and trip-hop beats to create, what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "masterful set of electro-soul" whose "spacious, modern production makes a surprisingly effective showcase for Womack’s grainy, deeply soulful vocals [...]

As the days grow longer, so does the list of new releases. Summer approaches and it's that time of the year when every indie band wants their album released. But few have the gall to go up against Metric 's heavily anticipated Synthetica . Emily Haines will soon become one of this year's most celebrated female vocalists. Listen to "Speed The Collapse" here . It's been one of those years, one where so many notable indie groups are releasing albums, it just becomes mind boggling. So while we are very focused on Metric's [...]

You know what's tasty this time of year? Smooth, sweet and cool ice cream. I just had some - well a variation on the theme since I can't eat dairy- and it brought to mind another tasty item, cover songs. Since I'm still in too much of a food coma to finish off the post I had started earlier today I am instead sharing with you the musical equivalent of the huge serving of ice cream I just inhaled. These are the top picks from my recent covers acquisitions. So, eat up! I Love You Always [...]

Frank Yang There was a stretch a few years ago when it seemed like there was a domino effect with record stores in Toronto closing up shop - a moment of silence for Flash & Crash, Driftwood, CD Exchange, Urban Sound Exchange, Edward's Record World, CD Replay, Second Spin, Sam The Record Man, Music World and a special tear for Stinky's (aka Cactus) back in Oakville. This was alarming on so many levels; personally, because I spent more than a few weekends digging through their bins for stuff and if they went away, I'd have to find [...]
