James Blake @ Mezzanine, SF 4/17/13

On a victory lap through California after an awesome first weekend set at Coachella, James Blake made his way up north to San Francisco for two sold out shows at the Mezzanine.

James Blake @ the Mezzanine 4/16 Live Review

James Blake @ the Mezzanine 4/16 Live Review James Blake didn't skip a beat. On the heels of his Weekend 1 Coachella performance, he came straight to San Francisco for not one, but two, nights of his soulful singing and bass heavy tracks. Last nights performance at the Mezzanine left me with a huge amount of respect for Blake: he knows how to make his experience one of a kind. James Blake has mastered the art of simplicity with intricacies. When performing "Digital Lion" off his new record  Overgrown , he gave life to every aspect of the song. The keyboard and drums built upon themselves with [...]

Ed Tullett - Never Joy

Silver Dive by Ed Tullett
Nineteen-year-old Ed Tullett 's assured and disarmingly original debut album Never Joy (December 4, Equal Vision) is one more stunning example of the remarkably innovative music coming out of the current British acoustic neo-folk scene. Drawing on the glistening guitar work from the likes of Alexi Murdoch and U.K. folk pioneer John Martyn, Tullett adds an ethereal atmosphere with snaking, unpredictable melodies, odd time signatures and a distinct vocal style that often combines an eerie and airy falsetto in harmony with a lower register. No surprise [...]

Shields - Mezzanine Video!

Shields - Mezzanine [HD]
Fun video for Mezzanine off the Kaleidoscope E.P. released last week!

[video] Shields: “Mezzanine”

Shields - Mezzanine [HD]
When I started watching the video for Shields's "Mezzanine" it was apparent that the video was going to be a big hook for the song. So I stopped watching the video and just listened to the song once without the visuals. Still a fan. Now, knowing I wasn't just being roped in by a funny [...]

Shields: Mezzanine

Shields: Mezzanine It may be MF cold in Chicago, but as usual, my coffee shop is overly warm (obviously the quadruple americano helps as well). I've been sitting on this track for about a week now and it's literally getting to the point that I try and sing it to myself to help give me some energy in the morning...is that sad? Anywho, with the coolest tumblr I have ever scene, interesting anti-starbucks photos like this , and a badass sock puppet video, I definitely recommend checking out Shields and their EP ( free here ). ASAP. [...]

Shields - Kaleidoscope EP

Shields - Kaleidoscope EP When I first heard Shield's debut single, " Mezzanine ", I was immediately hooked. The band utilizes such a fun, upbeat sound that is universally appealing. Quirky, energetic indie pop is always a winner, and the addition of electronic, tribal inspired sounds grants Shields a golden ticket to hop aboard my iPod. Today, Shields released their Kaleidoscope EP that definitely lives up to the talent that "Mazzanine" had previously hinted at. Every single track, from start to finish, could easily be a hit single, and these upbeat tunes will easily have you doing more than just [...]

Review // Shields ~ Kaleidoscope

Review // Shields ~ Kaleidoscope Words by Caroline Bursell My Newcastle experience as a foreigner has unfortunately been limited to Cheryl Cole and Geordie Shore, so the entrance of five-piece Shields and their debut EP Kaleidoscope in all its indie disco glory is a great change to say the least. The record is a collection of six tracks packed tight with synth-pop and caffeinated energy at its sweetest. Opener (and sock-puppet-video single) ' Mezzanine ', with its punchy pop notes, hits you like the surprise cardio section of an exercise DVD, [...]

SF Funk Fest Review: Fred Wesley & The New JB’s, Lyrics Born Band at Mezzanine, 11.3.12

Have you ever felt like you were in on a big secret? And nobody believed you when you told them this secret? Like the one where one of the most influential bands of the last 40 years staged a reunion in a 1,000 person night club that, somehow, didn't sell out in 30 seconds? Because [...]

Listen // Monday Playlist

Listen // Monday Playlist Loads of great tracks have trickled into our consciousness this week. Here are a selection of the best... Rhye ~ The Fall You may remember Rhye from the quite-stunning debut single that dropped earlier this year. Details about everything have been kept to a minimum, but we knew that The Fall is the title-track from a debut EP that will be released on November 12th via  Innovative Leisure/Polydor. More up-tempo than Open ( see here ), The Fall [...]

Shields - Mezzanine

Shields - Mezzanine Shields was recommended to me because of my love of the band Polarsets . If you compare anyone to the Polarsets, I'm going to listen. It's a given. I was ecstatic to find that Shields lived up to the hype once I heard how energetic and fun their single, Mezzanine, is. It may not be as tropical as Polarsets' music, but it definitely shares the same style and quality. Mezzanine begins with an array of percussion and steadily builds until frantic, over the top indie pop fills your ears. The result is a upbeat jam that is destined to [...]

Show Review: Howard Jones at The Mezzanine, 7/12/2012

Nostalgia about the '80s is a weird thing. For some reason, the "kids" of today will talk endlessly about going to see Modern English at Cafe Du Nord, hoping they'll play both "I Melt With You" and "I Melt With You '88." They'll go see endless cover bands of their new wave heroes.  But the [...]

The Twelves at Mezzanine [Photo Review]

The Twelves at Mezzanine [Photo Review] The Mezzanine played host to the Brazilian based electronic duo, The Twelves, last Friday. Unsurprisingly the show was a huge success and a great introduction to the long Memorial Day weekend.  I am an enormous fan of their remixes, but the thing that caught my attention was The Twelves' Luciano Oliveira singing over the music as he was mixing.  Of course his voice was distorted to fit the music, but never before have I seen a DJ sing while he mixed live. Most impressive! -Written and photographed by Fabian Molina
