The petition has almost 40,000 signatures, but needs more. It reads: The St. Mark's Bookshop, a vital Lower East Side cultural institution, needs a rent low enough to survive. Join the Cooper Square Committee petitioning Cooper Union, the bookstore's landlord, to give St. Mark's Bookshop a lower rent. The St. Mark's Bookshop has a long tradition in the Lower East Side and serves an admirable and increasingly rare function. St. Mark's is struggling to pay the market rent that Cooper Union is charging them at 31 3rd Ave. A significant rent [...]

Photo and autograph courtesy of the G Archives. Michael Moore Happy 57th birthday to film maker Michael Moore. His movies seek to expose some of the lies we are being fed and it's my personal opinion that the world needs more people like Michael Moore to speak up about these injustices. Also born today: singer Roy Orbison, actress Shirley Temple Black and writer William Shakespeare, who would be celebrating number 447 today. <!-- [...]
If you thought that meant Insane Clown Posse and got excited, you're probably reading the wrong blog. Having said that, I am very excited about the Instant Composers Pool's upcoming appearance at the Village's Le Poisson Rouge venue on Thursday, March 31. The Amsterdam-based group currently includes Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink (co-founders), as well as Tristan Honsinger, Mary Oliver, Tobias Delius, Ab Baars, Thomas Heberer, Michael Moore, Ernst Glerum, and Wolter Wierbos. As you can see from the video below (filmed live at the Bimhuis), it will be something of a senior citizen's club, but the group [...]
" America is not broke. Not by a long shot. The country is awash in wealth and cash. It's just that it's not in your hands. It has been transferred, in the greatest heist in history, from the workers and consumers to the banks and the portfolios of the uber-rich ... The only thing that's broke is the moral compass of the rulers. And we aim to fix that compass and steer the ship ourselves from now on ." – Michael Moore in Madison, Wisconsin on March 5, 2011 Related: [...]

Rocker Lordd Virgil 's video for their viral YouTube hit "Flint, Michigan" , that has now been seen in 54 countries, is going global, but will fellow Flint native Michael Moore come to a show? "We invite Mr. Moore to every one of our shows," says frontman Lordd Virgil , who was Michael Moore's paper boy years ago when the Oscar-winning director was shooting "Roger and Me" , the now-iconic documentary about the plight of Flint. I'm sure by now we've all heard some about the Wikileaks scandal. This is a big move in the world of leaked material with lots of questions. Here's a very brief overview of what's been happening. As you probably already know, Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, was arrested on charges of rape soon after the documents were leaked, supposedly completely unrelated. Michael Moore has since posted bail for him. Anna Ardin, the woman who is accusing Julian of assault may have ties to the CIA according to Disinfo.com. Meanwhile Bradley Manning, the soldier who originally leaked the documents to Wikileaks [...]

TIFF 2002 2002 was the year that I started to infect my friends with the film festival bug. I was able to share my knowledge in regards to the selection process, theatre locations, type of food and drink to have, etc. While 2001 had it far share of great films, 2002 completely blew it out of the water. The amount of exceptional films was simply staggering. On a personal note, this was also the year when the term "The Whale Riders" officially [...]

From the closing credits of Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story', Tony Babino belts out what is now my favourite version of The Internationale: "Speed it up", indeed.
A short review of Michael Moore's 'Capitalism: A Love Story' over at the Socialism Or Your Money Back blog. Apparently the review is going to be distributed as a leaflet when the film gets nationwide release in the UK at the end of this month.

Michael Moore has always been fat, preachy and so left-wing he has no room for even-handed discussion with "corporate fat cats." But he was once somewhat charming. He was a voice for the little guy (no matter how incompetent they were). In his early days on The Awful Truth I found Michael Bore actually quite funny and engaging. He had a small team, who knew their stuff (and would even be allowed a bit of camera time), to assist in his white collar crime busting investigations. It was cute. His people were SMART. Moore, being a director, [...]

cred: hanna liden Michael Moore interviewed by Naomi Klein NK : All right. Let's talk about the film some more. I saw you on Leno, and I was struck that one of his first questions to you was this objection—that it's greedthat's evil, not capitalism. And this is something that I hear a lot—this idea that greed or corruption is somehow an aberration from the logic of capitalism rather than the engine and the centerpiece of capitalism. And I think that that's probably something you're already hearing about the terrific [...]
If there's one thing that hip-hop can't be blamed for, it's the ongoing financial tsunami. If anything we stimulate the pipeline with our relentless materialism and thoughtless spending. In a way, "Bling Bling" BG was better than Bill Clinton for America's economy (and from what I hear he also keeps quite a few H dealers employed as well). I had a chance to sit down (along with some other writers) with director Michael Moore this past week in Boston, where he showed three screenings of his new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story [...]
Couldn't you get a better looking spokesperson than Michael Moore?!?!Fahrenheit 9/11 was the highest grossing general release political film of all time. Regardless of what relevant points Michael Moore might make in this film regarding the current state of the American economy, don't kid yourself....he's been laughing his way to the bank for years. American Capitalism has served him well.

BoyCott Blues should have caught the screening of Michael Moore 's new movie in Harvard Square on Wednesday night. Not because he's an frothing-at-the-mouth "revolutionary" a la Immortal Technique , nor because he's as politically unaware as Lupe Fiasco . But because he could probably filter the good parts of Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story into a more potent, clear-eyed assessment of our current position as a nation (bent over and leaned on, in case you didn't know) than the frumpy documentarian. He does something similar on "Back Stroke," a [...]
Michael Moore's new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, opens tomorrow on more than 1,000 screens across the country. As Moore states on his website, that's a record for an independent documentary.
