At the tail end of last month I was lucky enough to witness self-described 'ambient punk' band Deerhunter performing live at Shepherd's Bush Empire. Famous for its use of eclectic genres vacillating between shoegaze, psych-pop, post punk, 'ambient punk' is definitely the best way to categorise the band. Indeed, the atmosphere that they create live [...]

words: Jamie Milton 2010 will close with Deerhunter's fourth album, ' Halycon Digest ', at the forefront of everybody's mind. It's one of bigger releases over the coming months, one that whets the appetite more so than the majority of other releases set to show their sorry faces. In between this and 2008's double release of ' Microcastle ' and the more low-key ' Weird Era Cont . ', the profile of the group's frontman Bradford Cox has [...]

Deerhunter Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. (Kranky, 2008) You can't seperate Microcastle from Weird Era Cont. It isn't that they don't have their own nuances and individuality, but together, referencing one another, they are simply divine. Deerhunter's simplification and whole hearted embrace of pop on this (these) release(s) provides some of the most gorgeous moments of straight hooks of the decade. There is bliss around every corner. The release of Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. cements Deerhunter as one of the most important bands of the [...]

MP3: Deerhunter - Calvary Scars II / Aux Out Alright here is how this is going to go, and I'm probably only going to say this once: Every day until we finish, myself and Matt Giordano are counting down the very best albums of the decade. We each have our own awesome fucking lists and sometimes we share a few picks. Either way, both lists are the official stance on the music of this decade. Matt is kicking us off and my post will come later in the afternoon, from there it [...]

I have a confession to make. For years I would loudly proclaim my opinion that Lexington was vastly inferior to Louisville and that nobody in their right mind would ever want to live there. Now, my love for Louisville hasn't waned a bit (I still think it's the greatest town in America), but Lexington is quickly making a case for being one of the most exciting towns in the Midwest. With this year's Boomslang Fest courtesy of WRFL , they are [...]

Deerhunter is releasing a new EP called Rainwater Cassette Exchange digitally in May and on CD and vinyl in June, and since we are big fans of Bradford Cox and all of his projects, we're assuming that this new EP will be a great follow up to last year's Microcastle . But that's not for us to decide, so take a listen of the first single, which is also the title track. The new EP will be released, once again, on Kranky , and [...]

Deerhunter - Rainwater Cassette Exchange This is the title track from Deerhunter's forthcoming EP, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, which is to be released digitally on 16 May and physically on 8 June through Kranky/4AD. It's a laidback, fairly dub-tastic number which combines recognisable elements of Bradford's solo work as Atlas Sound with the catchy pop-rock of last year's Microcastle/Weird Era Cont., a double-feat that multiplied their audience considerably. A great title and a tantalising taste at another potential direction for the band; hopefully they will be performing more new material at their live dates next month in [...]

for some reason or another i never got about to listening to deerhunter 's fluorescent grey ep, the record released in the aftermath of cryptograms and in anticipation of last year's impressive microcastle . listening to it for the first time yesterday evening, i've come to appreciate why i love this band so much today, especially in the final song of the ep, "wash off". while most of the record demonstrated the band at its most incisive and refined, "wash off" lets the threads run a little looser, beginning with stripped down mechanical rhythm [...]

Well I picked up the new Deerhunter record close to the end of last year without knowing much of what to expect. Unfortunately I had never seen them live before but I actually have seen Bradford Cox doing a solo set opening up for the Freewheelin' Yo La Tengo back at the Lakeshore Theater in Chicago in 2007. When I saw him do his solo thing live it involved a LOT of delay pedals and guitar tricks to create extensive loops and basically snowballing walls of noise. There were moments that were really cool and some moments [...]

atlas sound - let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel (kranky) bradford cox ended his year on a high, with the release of deerhunter 's microcastle, the much lauded album that's found its way to most year end lists by now. but let's not forget how he started the year with a bang as well, with his solo effort under the atlas sound moniker. while cox's more direct work has been fittingly channeled to deerhunter, atlas sound remains his personal solace, where every feeling is indulged and every idea [...]

Deerhunter plough a farrow that marks them out from the indie guitar orthodoxy. They blend a myriad of influences, MBV, Jesus and Mary Chain and Ride with the art rock of Sonic Youth and some of the latent mentalism of the Liars. That Bradford Cox is only 26 is scary. You feel that is still loads to come from his fractured muse. www.highwayfive.blogspot.com

via The Decibel Tolls The last album on my chrono-ordered list, Deerhunter's Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. was probably the biggest surprise for me this year. I'd never been a huge fan of Deerhunter because, well, I didn't really get them. I liked Atlas Sound a lot, which I discovered earlier in the year , but I never got around to liking Cryptograms , the last Deerhunter album (I'm going to give it an honest try over the next few days). Then again, I used to [...]

I've been wrestling with the whole year-end list thing since I saw them popping up in November. Some makes lists of 50. Others try 33. Twenty-five is always a good number. So is 20. I've decided to go with 10 (plus a few honorable mentions). And I'm pretty sure it isn't going to resemble yours. Or his. Or hers. Or theirs. That's probably a good thing. Click on the cover to buy the album. And let the civil discourse begin ... 10. Yes No Yes No Yes No [...]

Since we're holding our breath to find out if Microcastle is, in fact, Pitchfork's number one album of the year , we thought we'd give the lead single another spin. Deerhunter - "Nothing Ever Happened"

Written by Jon Hegglund One of the best moments for a music fan is hearing potential realized, and a first listen of Deerhunter 's Microcastle yields exactly this kind of revelation. The tangled, messy neo-psychedelia of 2006's Cryptograms was an achievement in its own right, a record whose best moments came when coherent, powerful songs seemed to emerge, almost accidentally, from a dark carnival of dissonant sound. One listen to Microcastle , though, is evidence enough that Bradford Cox and his Atlanta mates have moved onward and upward [...]
