UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, GAUNTLET HAIR ( Bunk Bar , 1028 SE Water) To be sure, Unknown Mortal Orchestra's relatively meteoric rise shall not go without (continued) mention. Since February UMO have been criss-crossing the country like Mitt Romney. This time they return to Northwest soil in what feels like an odd, or possibly premature, victory lap with back to-back nights at Bunk Bar. Perhaps less familiar but equally intriguing are [...]

11.02.2011 is a palindrome day and there was no better way to celebrate this rare palindrome holiday than with a performance from a band clever enough to write a song about palindromes. Kansas City lucked out on Palindrome Day with a Beaumont Club concert featuring plenty of math and trivia-filled songs from They Might Be Giants . Chicago's Gold Motel opened the evening with summery tunes that helped the audience forget the threat of forecasted snow. Gold Motel ran into some technical troubles early in the set with an uncooperative keyboard; and for [...]
Album Raises New and Troubling Questions does neither. Nor does They Might Be Giants' 16th studio release (and second this year) come off as emphatically as the title jokingly suggests. But weed out a few forgettable tracks, and the album proves the duo is still, after almost 30 years, effortlessly churning out catchy songs with strange, broadly compelling lyrics. In short, they're answering old and mundane questions in the same new and troubling ways. Simple and short is the rule here. Five tracks into the album comes a wisp of a [...]

Indie-rock vets They Might Be Giants released their 15th studio album, Join Us, back in May to positive reviews. Excluding their children's albums (Here Come the 123s and Here Comes Science) it was their first full-length since 20072s The Else. That semi-hiatus apparently gave the Brooklyn-based group plenty of time for extra material. They compiling

Not only does the clip for “Can’t Keep Johnny Down," off new album Join Us [...]
