Beer will be guzzled and meat will be smoked in immense quantities while journalists and music fans trip about the sunny terrain of the weirdest city in the South. This year, the SXSW Music and Media Conference celebrates its 26th anniversary, but if you [...]
Miike Snow is set to release their second album Happy to You on March 13 (Downtown/Universal Republic). “Before this album, we were an idea,” says Pontus Winnberg in a statement from the group. “This time we were a band. And this time, we had paid our dues." Preview some of the songs on their SoundCloud page . The trio also heads out on a tour this month that includes a few SXSW parties, followed by Miami's Ultra Music Festival featuring David Guetta, Afrojack, M83 and, yes, Skrillex. We caught up with the [...]

This year at South By Southwest Music, I lost my voice and my glasses, drank tons of free booze, walked for miles, collected paper wristbands, failed at my attempt at seeing a house party show, and saw a whopping 2.6% of all showcasing acts! (Remember, even an inspired effort will get you, at most, 6% [...]

Sweden's Miike Snow are pretty much the definition of eclectic, if their eponymous 2009 album is anything to go by. Members of the band had been in hip-hop groups prior to their forming in 2007, while they have worked with Madonna , Kylie Minogue , Kelis and Britney Spears . Then there is frontman Andrew Wyatt, an American with his own diverse style. Fresh from a memorable performance at SXSW , it seems right to corner the band and get them to write about their many influences. In an [...]

The third day of the South by Southwest Music Festival was a full-on music orgy, including performances by Frightened Rabbit [top, at the Don't Mess With Texas event], Metric, Billy Bragg and Dead Confederate, among many. Photographer Scott Dudelson tirelessly made the rounds, and submitted these images. Bookmark It [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours SXSW makes the music world seem topsy-turvy. The indie-centric festival floods Austin with so many hardcore music fans that even the smallest buzz band can seem like full-blown rock stars and the death of Alex Chilton can resound like Michael Jackson 's. But after watching Miike Snow play the Spin@Stubbs dayparty -- Spin magazine's 25th anniversary celebration headlined by Hole was one of several showcases for the electro-pop outfit -- it's inexplicable [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News There might have been more people trying to get into Filter's SXSW Day Party at Austin's Cedar Street Courtyard than in the venue itself. Responsible for the high-traffic were Seattle indie-rockers Minus the Bear , femme fatale rapper Uffie and dream-pop act Miike Snow , the last a contender for "Band Playing the Most Shows at SXSW 2010." The sets were kept short and sweet. Minus the Bear, who have four albums under their belt, only [...]
The Spinning Platters crew was way too tired to do a podcast on Wednesday night/Thursday morning but we did one anyway because we're troopers. This one gets a little snippy as we disagree about the pronunciation of a few things, and we argue over the use of the phrase "killed it." You can subscribe by [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours Beginning your set more than half an hour late at the speed-of-light sensory overload event that is SXSW can be showcase suicide -- after all, with dozens of worthwhile bands playing within a few hundred feet in any direction, who has time to wait around listening to Mew on a PA system? Yet, that's exactly what a packed and eager crowd did on Wednesday night at the Galaxy Backyard in Austin for the KCRW party, as excited fans and jaded music industry types alike [...]
