Last year, Björk released her 'Biophilia' album, one of her most critically and commercially exalted albums ever. It appealed to those obsessed with the technical, exploring sounds and techniques often overlooked, while retaining as close to a pop sensibility as the Swedish chanteuse is ever going get ('It's Oh So Quiet' not withstanding). One track that really got everyone talking was 'Mutual Core'. Its haunting vocals and minimalist organ line giving way to a crushing gabber low-end stab could not have been predicted by anyone. On top of that, the [...]

Experimental musician Nicolas Jaar will be performing twice this week. Last year, Jaar was voted number #1 in Resident Advisor's 2011 Best Live Act poll. His Thursday night DJ set sold out immediately, and hopefully you are one of the lucky ones that has a ticket in hand. His live show on Friday will include [...]

Outer Osmo Ghost Mode is a fictional narrative centered around the interactions of Elda and Dell Banner, two online avatars stuck in the home map of a proto-virtual internet exploration program, Osmo. You create an avatar based on your self, and much like the program Second Life, create a ritual of activities that mirrors some idealized version of your life. Elda and Dell were created by an actual married couple of the same name who used the program for decades. Essentially, they have become the digital ghosts of the Banners. bjork - mutual core yeah... bjork has left the concept of song structure out the window for a few years now. what she does continue to do brilliantly is the marriage of technology and imagery into an artform; making her more of an artist than singer these days. i couldn't take my eyes off this andrew thomas huang piece commissioned by the LA museum of contemporary art (mixing puppetry and digital effects is SO cool yo!). genius or whacked out, whatever it is, you can't take your eyes off it! take a look [...]

The Little Tokyo-adjacent setting for the Play MOCA series proved perfect on Friday night for L.A. rockers IO Echo . The brainchild of Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross, the quintet brought their dark, dreamy, Far East-influenced sound to a stage erected in the plaza of the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. It was the first of three nights of a multimedia series presented by IAMSOUND Records, the cosmetics company Smashbox and the downtown museum. The series continues Aug. 17 with Zola Jesus and Active Child performing and winds up Aug. 24 with Cults and Lord Huron. [...]

Lord Huron , the local indie-rock band fronted by Michigan native Ben Schneider, has signed to L.A.-based IAMSOUND Records . Lord Huron's debut album "Lonesome Dreams" will be out Oct. 9. No music is available yet, but the record figures to surprise (in a very good way) fans of the band's first two EPs. Along with that news, IAMSOUND announed a series titled "PLAY MOCA" featuring live performances by Salem, IO Echo, Zola Jesus, Active Child, Cults and Lord Huron. The free, all-ages shows ( with reserved tickets ), at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (152 Central [...]

Make sure you check out "California Song" by Hedi Slimane at MOCA. The exhibit focuses on the period where Slimane spent in California, photographing architecture and rock stars. I had the opportunity to attend the Art In The Streets exhibit that went down over in Little Tokyo over at MOCA. This exhibit, which is over three months long, boasts about the street art from the '70s, props that inspired your favorite classic hiphop movies like Wild Style and Style Wars, and then some! You can check the preface above for more of the details of what the exhibit was about. Continue Reading/View Pictures After The Jump... [...]
