Happy Valentines Day, Power Pop lovers!

Grammy's 2012 - Paul McCartney - Golden Slumbers - Carry That Weight - The End
Click here to view the video on YouTube. I'm not sure how long this will be up on Youtube, but here is a wonderful sight of Sir Paul McCartney joined by his posse ( Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson ) and throw in Bruce Springsteen, Joe Walsh and Dave Grohl. All playing the Beatles "The End" and I thought just having The Beach Boys reunion on stage was an incredible site. What is really amazing is not the age of the Beach Boys (or McCartney) performing. Its that a 46 year old [...]

My tribute to 11.11.11

I Was Eleven - Bay City Rollers
Click here to view the video on YouTube. From the Bay City Roller album "Elevator" (1979). Please play this video at 11:00pm and maybe something magical will happen. Or maybe it's just a great power pop tune that I haven't heard in a long time....

Moldy Oldies I Love: The Hollies

British Invasion: The Hollies-Look Through Any Window 1963-1975 Trailer
Click here to view the video on YouTube. The trailer for the new Reelin' In The Years Productions/Eagle Rock Entertainment DVD- The British Invasion: The Hollies- Look Through Any Window 1963-1975. This first official documentary on the Hollies. This was a band that followed the Beatles in conquering America with the British invasion - and you'd be hard pressed to find a band who's sound changed so dramatically over time, but the quality of the music remained excellent. For you young'uns I'd go here first to hear more .

George Harrison Documentary due this October

Wow... I can't wait for this one. The Quiet Beatle gets to speak up in this full length documentary by Martin Scorsese. Includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart, the three-and-a-half hour documentary will examine Harrison's life and career.

Bye Bye Blackbirds and The Toms

Bye Bye Blackbirds and The Toms Bye Bye Blackbirds "Fixed Hearts" Rainbow Quartz recent pick up is this Oakland band we reviewed way back , and they sound better than ever. "Elizabeth Park" sounds like Tom Petty playing with The Spongetones, it's a snappy jangle filled melody that impresses. The followup. "Open A Light" continues the warm feeling, with some sweet guitar chord shifts on this mid-tempo gem. The country beat makes "Jack Frost" a bit like Gary Louris (Jayhawks) with a Beatlesque twist - its my favorite track here. Another good song is "Every Night At Noon" [...]

The Zombies "Breathe Out, Breathe In"

The Zombies "Breathe Out, Breathe In" The Zombies last reunion was to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the great 1968 album Odessey and Oracle . But now we get all new material from the reunited Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent for Breathe Out, Breathe In . So if you expect the band to just pick up where it left off unscathed by time you're in for disappointment. However, by todays standards of shuffling oldies acts on tour you'll be fairly impressed by this batch of material and the undiminished skills of both Blunstone and Argent. Cheap Trick's "Surrender" the Mariachi version

Cheap Trick Mariachi Mash Up - Surrender - Long Version
Legendary rockers Cheap Trick have mashed up their hit single, "Surrender," mariachi style in honor of Cinco de Mayo and the Hornitos™ Tequila Mariachi Mash Up competition. I love the 1978 version, and the Mariachi band's horns fit in perfectly here. Sing along with them "Mom esta bien, pop esta bien...." power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

Moldy Oldies: The Stories "Love is In Motion"

STORIES - LOVE IS IN MOTION
When it comes to obscure power pop seldom heard, this qualifies in spades. For those of you who get Bob Lefsetz email, his latest post was peek into his power pop nostalgia - The Move, ELO, The Kinks, The Left Banke and Stories. This track is a hidden gem from Stories album 'About Us' circa 1973. This was Michael Brown at his melodic peak, and it never really found an audience then as the musical zeitgeist concentrated on the album's cover of "Brother Louie." power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll [...]

Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story

nothing can hurt me: the Big Star story (trailer)
Today is exactly one year since the passing of music icon Alex Chilton. In the works is a full feature-length documentary about the massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure, and enduring legacy of pop music's greatest cult phenomeon, Big Star. Produced and directed by Drew Denicola and Danielle McCarthy. More info here. power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

Moldy Oldies: The Plimsouls "Million Miles Away"

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
The single is considered by some the apex of the 1980's power pop sound. Back when Nicolas Cage was a lanky teenager in the film Valley Girl , this was the biggest hit of that original soundtrack. It was rock and roll that combined punk energy with pop melody, and for me became part of an era long gone, but not forgotten. power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

A look back at Dwight Twilley

Dwight Twilley - Why You Wanna Break My Heart 1984
When one talks about perennial underrated musicians that have produced stellar material for years, Twilley has to be part of the conversation. In fact, he continues to produce great material, his latest Green Blimp is now available from his site. He's offering up the track "I'm On A Dream" FREE on his site for a limited time, just click the"Get It Now" button. Consider this video a quick appetizer - the main course comes on Monday. power pop reviews, power pop and [...]

Synchronicity in action: Stoney Curtis

Synchronicity in action: Stoney Curtis Two milestones occurred today - Actor Tony Curtis passed away at age 85 and The Flintstones celebrate it's 50th anniversary. Google dedicated it's home page to the modern stone age family, so today my post will honor both. Even though the actor is best known in movies like "Sweet Smell of Success" and "Some Like It Hot," he also did a cameo on the cartoon shows sixth season in 1965 as "Stoney Curtis." Be a good "slave boy" and get the episode here . What has any [...]

The ELO Spaceship!

ELO Spaceship animation
I am totally surprised no one posted this earlier. It would have been really cool to have this animation on a big stage screen while Jeff Lynne and the band played "Tightrope" live back in the day. Oh well, if Jeff ever makes a follow up to "Zoom"... power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

The Gin Blossoms and The Dandy Warhols

Good Morning
Here is a review of few major label bands that got my attention: Gin Blossoms "No Chocolate Cake" The Gin Blossoms were one of the few power pop bands of the 90's that had mainstream success with mega-hits including "Hey Jealousy" and "Til I Hear It From You." Now the band returns after their Major Lodge Victory album, to continue their brand of easy going power pop. The band (Robin Wilson, Jesse Valenzuela, Scott Johnson and Bill Leen) assisted by Danny Wilde (The [...]

The last track from Harvey Danger

Harvey Danger- Flagpole sitta
Formed in the Seattle smack in the middle of the grunge movement Harvey Danger's melodic rock came of age with "Flagpole Sitta" from the album Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? in 1998. From that point on the band seemed to fade from public memory despite some excellent material getting released. Well the band officially broke-up last year and you can download the final single "The Show Must Not Go On" and an album of B-sides (" Dead Sea Scrolls ") on their website here . Please donate to keep these tracks free. power pop reviews, power [...]

Lindsey Buckingham "Holiday Road"

LYNDSAY BUCKINGHAM - HOLIDAY ROAD
Yes, it's the theme song from National Lampoon's Vacation. Another in a long line of memorable hits from the eighties with the Fleetwood Mac guitarist and solo legend. power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

Goodbye To Tony Peluso

Carpenters - Goodbye To Love
Tony Peluso, the lead guitarist with the Carpenters for 12 years has passed away June 5. He is best remembered on the 1972 power ballad "Goodbye to Love," where he conceived and played the masterful, melodic solo and outro. This has long been my favorite Carpenters song and the solo never fails to bring back those painful teenage breakup memories. More on the songs history here . power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

Moldy Oldies: Dwight Twilley "Looking for the Magic"

Dwight Twilley Looking for the magic
One of my favorite Tulsa rockers with a classic. And yes Twilley is quite active, thank you. He's covered in The Beatles , Rarities Volume One and Out Of The Box . All are quite good. power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.

Girl in a Coma and Cheri Curri "Cherry Bomb"

Girl in a Coma with Cherie Currie - "Cherry Bomb"
At SXSW, my favorite grrl rock band Girl in A Coma performed "Cherry Bomb" with original Runaways member Cheri Curri. It's about time The Runaways got their due in rock history, and with Girl In A Coma's connection to Joan Jett's label it made total sense. Check out the official movie version of the song. power pop reviews, power pop and rock and roll opinions. Power pop and even more power pop and rock and roll.
