One of a few things I have in a growing pile of records from my friends overseas is this split LP from Calva and Io Monade Stanca . This one happened to come out last year through two excellent labels in A Tant Rêver Du Roi and Africantape on a very pretty slab of green translucent vinyl. Calva, who have the a-side here, are a new one to me and really I know very very little about them other than that they are a duo from what [...]

alice rutherford Laetitia Sadier "One Million Year Trip" Laetitia Sadier's voice will always be associated with Stereolab, but that's not really such a bad thing. Still, Sadier is eager to discover a new space of her own. She has recently scored a Marxist film, made three albums with her band Monade, and now presents her first completely solo endeavor, The Trip . This interview by Kristina Benson. You said in a [...]

I raised all of you better than this. Here is all the wrongness which you allowed to happen during my recent sabbatical: 1. You encouraged Leslie Hall to channel her inner Roches (but at least she possesses a much better fashion sense). 2. You catipulted Santogold into the charts simply for emulating M.I.A. when, in reality, she is also [...]

Are you guys starting to see why this is my unofficial birthday party?

The Lot, the late-summer free concert on the parking lot at the Schlafly Bottleworks, has come and gone for another year. Held on Saturday, this year's line-up featured So Many Dynamos, Earthworms, Clownvis Presley and the final Victoria performance, among other highlights. Photographer Steve Truesdell was there and has these photos: Slide Show Slide Show [...]
It's just eighteen days until the Lot , the annual outdoor music fest at the Schlafly Tap Room sponsored by Metropolis. This year is no different -- and unlike last year, there will be plenty of food to soak up the copious amounts of Schlafly beer you'll drink (in the form of pizza, hot dogs, ice cream and Mexican food). Fire breathers, belly dancers, DJ Mahf and Clownvis Presley will also be on hand to entertain. But because we know you're trying to arrange your time at the Lot around [...]

Is there any band more eternally hip than Stereolab ? I mean, you never hear hipsters bitching about how lame Stereolab is. It's just kind of an accepted fact that they're untouchable. Stereolab - Neon Beanbag "Neon Beanbag" comes from Stereolab's first album of new material since 2006's EP collection, Fab Four Suture . Chemical Chords will be released on the equally legendary 4AD label on August 19th. Honestly, I wasn't aware that Stereolab was still a functioning group. I kind of lost track [...]
Last-minute show tonight, says Big Muddy Records , featuring Woody Pines , GuitarMat from Rum Drum Ramblers and the Monads . Show starts at 9 or 10ish I'm sure. Video of Woody after the jump; he's a real interesting cat who aligns well with the aesthetic of Big Muddy.

(Thanks to bands for permission to post MP3s!) (Shame Club, by Jennifer Silverberg) Shame Club , Come On ( Small Stone ) www.myspace.com/shameclub An apt exhortation to fans and detractors alike, Shame Club's Come On honors classic rock heroes without resorting to musty dinosaur gestures. Guitars scream like bottle-rockets or twist lazily like a kite – mimicking Led Zeppelin and Motörhead as much as Sly and the Family Stone or Queens of the [...]
