Bad Veins - or the trio of Benjamin Davis, Sebastien Schultz and a 1973 reel-to-reel player named Irene - may come from the humble midwest, but their music is nothing short of epic in scope. The band's self-titled debut is packed with three minute dramatic opuses. Davis' low bellow pushes each tunes' driving guitars, oft-pulsing synths and car-crash percussion into a hugely catchy frenzy. This isn't the type of music two men can make alone with their own human hands; here's where Irene comes to play. The hulking piece of machinery plays upwards of 70 [...]
MP3 : Avi Buffalo - Truth Sets In (live on Laundromatinee.com ) Avi Buffalo , from Long Beach, California, is the project of songwriter Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg. The band, full of kids barely out of high school, has signed to Sub Pop Records and will release their self-titled debut this coming April. Avi grew up with skateboarding aspirations, but when he couldn't conquer the fear of dropping into the half-pipe, he turned to guitar. For the uninitiated, [...]
MP3 : We Were Promised Jetpacks - An Almighty Thud (live on Laundromatinee.com ) 2009 was a great year for the latest wave of Scottish bands, particularly for Fat Cat Records labelmates Frightened Rabbit, Twilight Sad, and We Were Promised Jetpacks . Laundromatinee.com had the chance to record with both Twilight Sad and We Were Promised Jetpacks at the 2009 Monolith Music Festival. The interesting thing about We Were Promised [...]
MP3 : These United States - Get Yourself Home (live on Laundromatinee.com ) Based out of both Lexington, KY and Washington, D.C., These United States started out as the brainchild of Jesse Elliott and collaborator David Strackany (better known to most as Paleo), with an ever-changing, shifting collective of collaborators. The lineup has more recently solidified into its current incarnation (Elliott, Robby Cosenza, J. Tom Hnatow, Justin Craig, and Colin Kellogg). You can find [...]
MP3 : The Antlers - Atrophy (live on Laundromatinee.com ) As I stated when we launched Laundromatinee's first session with The Antlers , we spent some great time with the band at The Monolith Music Festival. Despite their " Rising " and " Best New Music " status from Pitchfork.com, as well as the non-stop praise for [...]

Seriously it bums us out that we might not get a chance to experience another year of the Monolith Fest. This was our first year and we had a blast , as did all of our friends from Austin and Denver. We were looking forward of making it a yearly occurrence and now we might not get that chance. Hopefully someone will help them out. The official site sums it up in a few sad paragraphs down below. MONOLITH Fans, We are very saddened by the nature [...]
Since forming in 2007, the Monolith Music Festival has brought the likes of Spoon, The Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Justice, The Mars Volta, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Phoenix to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. However, as revealed in a open letter posted on the festival's website late last night (Nov. 19), the future of Monolith is now "very grim." The letter reads, "A tough economic year and an opening day of chilling rain combined to put a serious dent in our humble operation. We have continued [...]
MP3 : The Thermals - Now We Can See (live on Laundromatinee.com ) Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster, the two core members of The Thermals , have been through a lot together. Four albums, a few different studio and touring line-ups, a failed relationship, and two high-profile indie labels - just to name a few of the challenges. As the saying goes, what hasn't killed them, has only made them stronger. Their third album, [...]
The Twilight Sad often draw comparisons to greats like My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, Interpol and The Cure. Other reviews naturally lump them in with fellow Scottsmen like Arab Strap and Josef K. All can be true in various ways, but no matter what comparisions one might make to the past, there is one thing that is certain. The band is helping lead an invasion of incredible, modern, talent from Scotland. This year, the band toured the U.S. with two such talents, Fat Cat Records labelmates We Were Promised Jetpacks and Frightened [...]

A couple weekends ago, The Laundromatinee.com crew, with the help of Esurance.com/music , packed up our gear and headed out to The Monolith Music Festival. We recorded sessions with 14 bands over the course of the two-day festival. We'll start rolling all of the sessions out next week over at Laundromatinee.com , but we wanted to give you a preview today because The Walkmen are playing in Indianapolis tonight at [...]

The Mars Volta were undeniably talented. They were the most talented group of musicians as far as ability and showmanship goes that I have seen in recent memory. These things can never be taken away from them. But the whole thing came off as a little masturbatory, so I ended up leaving before the encore. I like their music ... for the most part ... but I just couldn't handle the live show and the fans. Maybe it was just the people around me, but there were some very disrespectful people around me. I [...]

I first heard Chromeo right after the Electric Six got pretty big, and I felt like they were just ripping off the E6. Well now that I've seen Chromeo, I can safely say this has always been a self containted disco-infused rock and roll project. Good god this man has a following. Their live set was the standard dancy and awesome, but sometimes, even though you could go into alliteration and wordiness (like I'm known to unbashfully do), that's all that needs to be said. would see again. Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin [...]

Phoenix's newest album actually kind of un-grew on me. I loved it at first, but then I found myself skipping tracks, and then really only listening to one or two songs, then none. Their live set was kind of the same way. Their songs are very poppy and cleverly constructed, but I didn't get all tingly inside. I'm pretty sure I was alone on this one though. Phoenix - Lasso

You know, other than Sleepyhead, I didn't really like much of Passion Pit's EP or LP. My buddy Jamie was absolutely bezonkers about them, so I was willing to give it a shot. You know, it was fun and synthy, but other than Sleepyhead, I couldn't really dig it that much. The Man knows how to milk a good thing, that's for damn sure. The audience was screaming so loud it almost hurt. Passion Pit - Sleepyhead

A Churning Death Machine. this is the band that all the other bands came to watch. The room had a line a good 20 minutes before they went on stage, and the room was almost instantly packed. It was like the other HEALTH shows I've been to: absolutely freaking insane. No one is ever fully prepared to see a HEALTH show. HEALTH - Die Slow [...]

Disco infused Bright Eyes-y synth pop that had many a person shaking their bootay. Spirited and youthful, the sound was manufactured sounding, but the emotion and soul driving it was pure and lovely. Red Wire Black Wire - Compass

When the Thermals come to town, you see them. Them's the rules. Why? Because they are the most perfect pop band marauding as an indie punk band. They've written some of the most timeless pop songs ever to be thought of. See the video below the mp3 The Ther mals - When We Were Alive

They were sweet and genuine, adorable and dancy, exciting and inviting.Their music doesn't stir me the same way it did many of the other people in the room, but I have a feeling I was in the minority in the fairly packed room. The Love Language - Stars

I was not entirely ecstatic for the Dandy Warhol's set, mostly because I'd never really been into them, their heyday being a little bit before my time, but they held it down like true indie rockers. Solid performance that is only possible after doing it right for a while now. The Dandy Warhols - Wonderful You

Dark, swimming, brooding music that mists the air around you. Taking architecture classes taught by Kevin Shields, Neon Indian was an ever changing, beautifully swirling mess of emotions, seemingly just barely on the edge of being controlled. It was evident that every bit of the show was perfectly coordinated though. A show like this couldn't be any other way. Neon Indian - Should Have Taken Acid With You
