Filed under: Video , Exclusive , New Music Altantic We have a special treat for all of you Twihards out there! While you might still be wearing your #TeamEdward shirt in denial that the movie franchise is over, you can still enjoy this slice of the "Twilight" soundtrack. POP ETC (formerly known as the Morning Benders ) joined Green Day , Passion Pit and Ellie Goulding in contributing [...]
Last Nite - POP ETC - Strokes cover - Click to download POP ETC is great. You may know them as their former name, The Morning Benders. The story with that is, they found out that in the UK “Benders” was a derogatory term for a gay person and so changed it. Bravo POP ETC. Dig this cover of Last Nite.

If you don't know the story as to why The Morning Benders decided to change their name to POP ETC , then you should read this . I certainly will infinitely and forever love the formerly known band for this: Frank and I saw them perform at The Troubador . They played through a long set and saved their best for the end. Typical LA indie crowd didn't budge until "Excuses" came up, at which point the room came alive with swaying lovers... You can't [...]
I missed the memo somewhere when The Morning Benders officially changed their name to Pop Etc , after the band became aware that "bender" is a slur in other parts of the world for gay people. Regardless, the band formerly known to us as The Morning Benders have released their first music under their new name, as a free mixtape. Listen below or download it over at Pretty Much Amazing .

The band posted on their official website and Twitter accounts last night that The Morning Benders were no more and that the band has re-emerged with a new name: Pop ETC . The band has posted a long explanation of why they decided to change their name on the Morning Benders' website [ HERE ]. Basically, over the years they learned that "bender" was a derogatory term for homosexuals in Europe, so they decided to change the name to avoid making music under a potentially offensive name: [...]

I guess the lesson here is to vet your band name through as many filters as possible. The Morning Benders — the pop quartet started in Berkeley five-plus years ago by SoCal native Christopher Chu — have changed their name to POP ETC . "We simply cannot go on using a name that is demeaning to the gay community," Chu said in a statement released by the band, explaining that the band had no idea when they chose their name that in the U.K. "bender" is a derogatory term for a homosexual. And in the [...]

It surprised me to learn that it's been ten years since The Strokes released their debut album Is This It . Maybe it should also surprise me that it's been ten years since I graduated high school. In honor of this ten year anniversary, Stereogum decided to curate a tribute album to The Strokes debut: eleven bands covering the eleven tracks on the album. I never followed The Strokes very closely and didn't pay much attention to Is This It . However, it's interesting to hear alternative takes on these tracks. [...]
A few pretty little diddies performed by The Morning Benders for La Blogotheque . You can watch a performance of one of the tracks below the mp3 links. - Joel The Morning Benders - "Oh Annie (live)" The Morning Benders - "Virgins (live)"

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music Near the end of a sizzling, crowd-pleasing performance Thursday night at New York's Webster Hall, Morning Benders frontman Chris Chu grabbed the microphone and, slightly out of breath, addressed the crowd. "We've done something like 12 or 13 shows in New York the past year, and you've come out to all of them," he said. "That means a lot. Sing along with us!" Roared their approval, those in the front [...]
Oy vey, again with the email exchange. Bands are loving this TopSpin these days aren't they? But I digress, this is a post about Morning Benders, who have just had their song 'Excuses' remixed by The Golden Filter. The band has been on tour throughout 2010 in support of their second album, Big Echo and [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Ever since the March release of their LP, 'Big Echo,' produced by Grizzly Bear bassist Chris Taylor, the Morning Benders have boasted a "buzz band" label. But it's taken some time for the San Francisco indie pop outfit to get to where they are today. "A lot of people think it's an overnight thing, but the fact is, we've been going at it for a long time," [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Television On top of his acclaimed acting career, ' Bored to Death ' star Jason Schwartzman is also a respected musician, first from his days with Phantom Planet and now with his own Coconut Records project, which provided the show's noir-ish theme song. As both the star and a musician, it would seem natural that Schwartzman would have a lot of input into the program's just-released [...]

Check out this brand new song by The Morning Benders called Virgins. It's been rumoured that they had written some new tracks and here's the first sneak peak. Another awesome song by the Californian four piece.
Those boys out in Paris with the tricksy camera angles, beautiful sound engineering, and seemingly endless access to excellent acts are getting ready to release their apartment concert for The Morning Benders. Sometimes bands just leave me speechless when I'm at shows, and I know that if I had been at this one (Max was), I probably would've cried. Not saying, just saying. This yet-to-be-released track is one performed especially for their little apartment shindig in Paris. The Morning Benders bring a creative sense of tempo to their songs, and there's nothing like Christopher's arching vocal [...]

Check out The Morning Benders video for their new song "All Day Day Light". Honestly can't wait for this album! The Morning Benders - "All Day Day Light" from Jack Ferry on Vimeo .

The New Collisions are kind of like our current L.A. weather pattern — a rather gloomy set of lyrics that is burst wide open by sunny power pop by the time it really kicks in. The Boston-based band was discovered by the Cars' great Greg Hawkes last year and have already shared the stage with the Morning Benders , You Say Party , New Wave heavy-hitters, the B-52s and Bowery heroes Blondie . Indie power-pop may not be your thing, but you can't deny that this is exactly what is needed to [...]

There's a lot of the sun-splashed Sixties in the music of A B & the Sea , the Bay Area quintet that was founded in Wisconsin by guitarists Koley O'Brien and Joe Spargur. Two years after O'Brien and Spargur packed up the van and headed west, they've combined with Troy Lawton, Zak LaVigne and David Hunt to sha-la-la their way into the hearts of plenty of fans. Spreading their music via free downloads hasn't hurt, either. Their latest EP, "Boys & Girls," was made with the help of the Morning Benders' Christopher Chu and Wallpaper's Eric Frederic, but it's [...]
What do you get when you put 75 California hipsters in a room? Apparently you get some pretty cool music. Yours Truly recently posted this video from a session recorded last December. If you'd like to download the audio version of the live session, I've put that below as well. Enjoy. - Joel The Morning Benders – "Stitches (Yours Truly Session)"
Miniature Tigers - Gold Skull Found this gem in my inbox this morning. It’s the first single from Miniature Tiger’s new album FORTRESS, out July... (Visit my blog for more!)

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , New Music Sure, there might be a bevy of bikini-clad girls splashing around in the Black Keys ' record-label promo and unofficial music video for their new track 'Next Girl,' but what you should really pay attention to is the yellow scrolling alert at the bottom. Calling it an "attempt by their record label to attract attention to the band using a ridiculous dinosaur" -- who happens to be named Frank [...]
