Side projects, eh? Despite the odd gem, they generally fall into the category of forgettable self-indulgences for fevered egos. And side projects from sidemen? Well… hang on a minute. You may already know James McNew as the third member of Yo La Tengo, whose affable presence is often overlooked in favour of his espoused bandmates Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley. He’s the tall, funny one whose musical agility has made him just as vital to the Hoboken trio as his friends – pop folklore has always generated affection towards wedded musical couples, but James’ sparkling wit and adroit songwriting talents [...]

Icelandic twins Pascal Pinon released their new album Twosomeness this past February via Morr Music . Extremely intimate, the album was recorded in a bedroom studio in a place they shared in Iceland. Their name is a play on the freak show from early last century named Pasqual Pinon, meaning two-headed Mexican. In their latest video for "Bloom" the pair are placed in front of a colorful backdrop with their images floating in and out. It was directed by photographer Alísa Kalyanova. [...]

James McNew (Yo La Tengo and Dump) fondly recalls a 1989 slice of minimalist enchantment from New Zealand indie legend Chris Knox.

It should be no surprise that several of the artists topping this week's list of new releases were making appearances at SXSW last week, but two of them were also previewing their new songs live on KEXP during our broadcast from Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop. Billy Bragg and Palma Violets both gave memorable performances. Bragg, the veteran songwriter, worked with veteran producer Joe Henry (an accomplished songwriter himself) on his 13th studio album, and first in five years, which our Music Director, Don Yates, says that Tooth and Nail "is steeped in world-weary melancholy [...]
PopMatters is pleased to premiere the reissue of Dump's Superpowerless , one of the quintessential four-track albums of the '90s. James McNew may be best known as a jack-of-all-trades member of Yo La Tengo, but he's also the one-man-band that goes by the name Dump, one of the quintessential lo-fi home-recording acts of the '90s. With the upcoming reissues of 1993's Superpowerless (on 19 March) and 1994's I Can Hear Music (on 16 April), shrewd listeners will be introduced to -- or reacquainted with -- some of the catchiest, most endearing bedroom-pop gems committed...

@dumpland @morrmusic Género: Lo-Fi Indie, Indie Pop.

Icelandic renaissance man makes big. Morr Music, 2013 7.2 / 10.0 In my marathon time spent with Sin Fang, a music act I was not previously familiar with, I realized two things: main...
Iceland's, Sin Fang is back with his third album, titled Flowers, and carries on in his lo-fi off the radar type of sound. Record label Morr Music describes their artist as "Iceland's new king of lo-fi layered lushness", and it shows in such a song as 'Young Boys'. Great song to start out strong in 2013, and perhaps a little competition for fellow Icelanders Sigur Ros.
Iceland’s Sin Fang will release his third album of experimental indie pop later this month . “What’s Wrong With Your Eyes” is the second track on the album (named Flowers ) and it’s a beautiful introduction to the artist’s lush orchestral arrangements and ethereal harmonies. Flowers is out 2/19 on Morr Music .

Yo La Tengo bassist, James McNew is set to re-issue two solo albums this spring. The musician, who joined the group for 1992 effort May I Sing with Me , will put out 19912s Superpowerless and 19952s I Can Hear Music on 4 March and 1 April respectively. The releases will see a physical release via Morr Music. You can listen to two cuts 'Secret Blood' and 'Slow Down', released as a 73 AA single, below:

Damn, 2013, you are looking good! You just keep hitting us week after week with one killer list of new releases after another. This week, there's no way we're not going to run out to pick up the latest from long-time KEXP favorite Frightened Rabbit . As if there was any doubt that this would land high on KEXP's regular rotation, our Music Director, Don Yates, commended it for being "another emotionally stirring set of anthemic folk-pop, with a huge, densely produced sound combining reverberating guitars and urgent rhythms with Scott Hutchinson’s impassioned vocals and dark, brutally honest lyrics." [...]

Iceland has long produced artists with a unique take on the world, and one of my favorites is Sindri Már Sigfússon. He goes by the moniker Sin Fang when not fronting the Icelandic collective Seabear. Sigfússon has returned with Sin Fang's third LP, Flowers , which is set for a mid-February release on Morr Music . There are a few reasons I consider Sigfússon one of the more cutting-edge musicians around. For one, he produces highly creative songs that make up very well-rounded albums. Clangour , his [...]
The idea of starting a band actually came up when we were at a rock concert and I whispered to our previous bass player: Oh it would be so cool if we’d be in a band. And she agreed, so we decided to do something about it! Make it a word and a blow. Reissues of Yo La Tengo bassist’s work as Dump on the way. James McNew is probably best known as the bassist for Yo La Tengo , but he previously recorded a couple of albums under the moniker Dump . This Spring, Morr Music will release his albums, ‘93’s Superpowerless [...]

Rimasterizzati da Bob Weston ( Shellac , Mission of Burma ) i 2 dischi saranno per la prima volta realizzati anche in versione vinile. Sam Jones She & Him are not a band given to mystery. Despite the anonymous name, everyone knows it's Matt Ward and Zooey Deschanel and their sugar-sweet old-timey country-pop sound is pretty well-established at this point. And if you're at all surprised that their third album, announced yesterday as coming May 7, is called Volume 3 , then you really haven't been paying attention. But residents of the Greater Toronto Area looking at the tour dates that accompanied the announcement can be forgiven for scratching their [...]
Dump, the recording and performing alias of James McNew, is reissuing his long out-of-circulation LPs Superpowerless (1993) and I Can Hear Music (1994) on Morr Music . McNew has been the bassist from legendary lo-fi rockers Yo La Tengo since 1992. Remastered by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma), the LPs are being released on vinyl for the first time ever. Superpowerless will be available as a CD, a double LP or digital download, and I Can Hear Music will be available as two CDs, a triple LP package or digitally. Both will be released with the original album [...]
