It was all good just A week ago, Sunday started pretty typically in the Big Easy. Jazz cigarettes were lit in Louis Armstrong Park. Moms across the city were being treated to breakfast in bed or brunch out at their favorite cafe. Somewhere, a dude was puffing an L with The Meters or Mystikal as the soundtrack. In my head, I picture Steve Zahn’s character from Treme waking up to heaping plate of Cajun Benedict, “Shake Ya Ass” and a baseball-bat spliff. The Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club, a local [...]
Had a good Mother's Day with mama ON&ON. She needed a new spring jacket, so I took her to Goodwill in Central Square. I copped her a Donna Karan lil sumthin for $7 and I was a hero. We sat outside on a bench building, while watching three Central Square homeless drunks take turns falling in the middle of the sidewalk in front of horrified fgt M.I.T. professors. We discussed the fact my mother is disgusted with the Cleveland Basement Rapist's mom declaring that she is sorry, and suffering with everyone else involved [...]

Friends, I know it's been a little bit of a while (I've been gone for work... boo) but today we celebrate Mother's Day... that day where we honor the one who has put up with way too much of our bullshit growing up, and still didn't kill us. Here's a little punk rock mix for all you punk rock moms. MP3: Youth Brigade – Punk Rock Mom The Vapids – Make Mommy Proud The Misfits – Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight? [...]

I woke up to the sound of rain, a gentle rain. I stayed in bed a while and listened. I could also hear Gracie's deep sleep breathing and every now and then a sigh. Today is Mother's Day. It is the day I honor my mother and my memories of her. Last week my friend and I went out to dinner. She mentioned it was her mother's birthday and how much she still misses her. She said no one told us it would be this hard. Every year I post the same entry about my mother. At Easter [...]

With today being Mother's Day, why not spotlight G&D and their release of their new song, "Muthadear," a tribute the women who loved and raised them. The record's a little old school R&B with a touch of Hip-Hop breathed into the mix but all the way beautiful as women are heralded as "the feminine energetic aspect that holds the world together." The record's taken from the duo's upcoming album, The Lighthouse , due out on May 21. Previously - G&D (Georgia Anne [...]

Patti Smith, photographed by Annie Liebovitz in 1996 with her son Jackson and daughter Jesse The awesome job of being a mother is impressive enough. But how about being a mother, and a rock n' roll icon? An astonishing number of artists have managed the balancing act of family life and public life over the years, perhaps not getting the credit they're due. Which hopefully will change sooner rather than later. An indie documentary called Rock N Roll Mamas celebrating the trials and triumphs of musical motherhood is making it's [...]

It's Mother's Day this weekend. The time of year where you heap presents and praise on the woman who gave birth to you, raised you, and puts up with your awful attitude year round. However, instead of the usual flowers/candy/dinner combo, Rock it Out! Blog suggests you offer your mom a mixtape of songs that show how much you love her. What songs do you think are the best to play on Mother's Day? Leave your comments down below and then go give your mom a hug. Make sure to follow Rock it Out! Blog on Twitter [...]
We have so much to thank our mothers for. In addition to birthing us, feeding us, and bathing us, they’ve also been our most influential style icons. In the past, we've counted down to Mother’s ... read more

Raheem DeVaughn put together a song and video to wish all the moms out there a "Happy Mother's Day." But let this posting serve a duel purpose reminding everybody that Mother's Day is Sunday so make sure the Old Earth's card is in the mail or hustle over to the UPS store and get a gift in the mail pronto, hermano. And if you're can't be there with her, call (don't text) and tell the woman who gave you life that you love her dearly. Thanks for the reminder, too , Raheem.

A few weeks ago, I started thinking about Mother's Day. What I wanted to do to celebrate my mom. And then suddenly, I had this realization that I'm a MOM. To another little human! A little person who wakes up in her crib and stares up at me with her big eyes every morning, and gives me a toothless, slobbery grin (usually). Once I got over the wild fact that I did, indeed, give birth to a little person earlier this year, I went back to thinking about how we were going to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom, as [...]

Today here in the UK it is Mother's Day (yes, America, we don't all celebrate it when you do), so this week we've gone and put together a Sunday Spotify Slaylist dedicated to mothers everywhere. Well, almost. Well, kind of . Look, it's not as if there are loads and loads and loads of (good) rock songs about mothers out there, okay? So yeah, we've stretched the concept of "mothers" pretty thin. Not all of these songs are complimentary about mothers. At least one is about people [...]

What the fuck am I doing calling something a Currycast, I hear you ask. Music cannot be curry-themed, and nor is it. This is called the Currycast simply because I am visiting my Granddad in Manchester and he has just asked me to cook a curry for him tomorrow night. I have never cooked curry before, and Mrs. Toad makes such a fine one that I have never really been motivated to have a go, myself. Why bother making the second-best curry in the house, after all. However, I made a gigantic leg of roast lamb today, so [...]
Baltimore, Maryland can do no wrong in my ears and though needless to say Victoria Legrand is the figurative big momma of the city's burgeoning dream-pop escapades, please do spare a thought for Mothersday . An all-male ensemble of three, the snowballing crescendoes with which the woozy bundle of anthemia that is Shoulder Soldier peaks form their first artistic endeavour to tumble on over from the East Coast: kept in line by martial snares and regimented further by bristly yodels, it's one that'll stick with us right through Mothering Sunday. And for those of you out there [...]
Mothersday | Shoulder Soldier It’s become a bad habit of mine when searching for music to either skip through songs too quickly or to just click on the beefiest looking part of a Soundcloud wave, as if there’s a way of getting into the heart of a song by fast-forwarding. It’s like skim-reading. And it sucks. Unless a song blasts a wall of white noise and insults your Mother within the first five seconds, you should probably give it a chance to progress and entice. Mothersday’s [...]
