The year 2000 was one of the most tumultuous in the history of the Allman Brothers Band as in May of that year original member Dickey Betts was relieved of his duties, supposedly by fax. At first it was reported that Betts was suspended from the band, but that eventually became a full-on divorce. The remaining members of the band had a full summer tour booked and brought fellow southern rocker Jimmy Herring in to fill Betts' hard-to-fill shoes for the lengthy three-month run. When Herring took the [...]
Legendary rocker Steve Winwood closed out last month's Mountain Jam festival with a set filled with classics from nearly every period of his career, including his time as a teenaged member of the Spencer Davis Group. For SDG's Gimme Some Lovin' Winwood invited festival host Warren Haynes up to add soulful guitar to the 1966 hit. Radio Woodstock 100.1 has just posted professionally shot video of Haynes tearing up Gimme Some Lovin with Winwood and his band. Take a look... Steve Winwood w/ Warren Haynes - [...]

[Photo from the Mountain Jam Facebook Page] With its all-star lineup of sacred steel /modern jazz/blues musicians, you can't help but call The Word a supergroup. Featuring Robert Randolph ( pedal steel guitar ), John Medeski ( keyboards ), and all three members of North Mississippi Allstars - Luther Dickinson ( electric guitar ), Cody Dickinson ( drums , washboard ), and Chris Chew ( bass guitar ), The Word don't generally get to tour together often (although they've done some festival dates this summer), but when these players share a stage, it's an [...]

[All photos courtesy of Dino Perrucci Photography ] We have been fans of the feel-good rock of Givers ever since we spent a balmy summer afternoon with them at the Backyard Brunch Sessions last year. Nearly a full year later, they have seen their star continue to rise, playing large venues in NYC and elsewhere and finding favor with fans of all ages. This year's Mountain Jam made the wise move of adding them to the roster, as Givers gave the proceedings a younger, more musically diverse flavor while still complementing [...]

[Photos courtesy of Dino Perrucci Photography ] As someone who spent their college years in North Carolina at the turn of last century, Ben Folds Five has always been special to me. A native North Carolinian introduced me to Ben Folds' music, and the themes in the music - romantic frustration, fear of consequences, and straight-up rage at lovers who jilt you - found natural purchase in my young self. I saw the band a bunch of times between 1997 and 2000 in my then-home state, outdoors and on the quad, at the Cat's Cradle [...]

[Photos courtesy of Dino Perrucci Photography ] If you're a doubter of "jamband festivals", this Gov't Mule performance from Mountain Jam alone might make you reconsider. Three of us from the NYCTaper crew came out for Saturday of this year's Mountain Jam, held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in Hunter, NY, and the Mule was that day's main attraction for a number of reasons. The fact that they are a legendary live band was only part of the picture this time; this particular performance also honored the late, great Levon Helm [...]

Our 10AM video posts this week will feature artists set to perform at Bonnaroo. This past Saturday at Mountain Jam, the Ben Folds Five returned to the touring circuit nearly 12 years after the trio parted ways in 2000. While the Chapel Hill-based band did get together for a one-off gig in 2008, the Mountain Jam set was only the beginning of a reunion that will see the release of an as of yet untitled album in September and a worldwide tour that is expected to last until 2013. [...]

The finale of today's main stage action at Mountain Jam in Hunter, New York found Gov't Mule collaborating with the Levon Helm Band on seven songs made famous by the late drummer from his days with The Band. Levon band members Larry Campbell, Brian Mitchell, Jim Weider, Byron Isaacs and the horns all joined Gov't Mule, which features Ramble regular Danny Louis on keys, for the whole set, while Justin Guip and Teresa Williams came out for most of the tunes. [ [...]
Two years ago Warren Haynes' Mountain Jam festival hosted a birthday celebration in honor of Levon Helm turning 70. Helm, who passed away last month, lived near Hunter Mountain where the fest takes place, so it was a fitting site for what was a star-studded set. At this year's Mountain Jam, Haynes will pay tribute to The Band drummer by welcoming the full Levon Helm Band to the stage with Gov't Mule for a full set on Saturday, June 2nd. The performance is set to include music from throughout Helm's legendary career and will take place [...]
