After two tracks of creepy, black-metal-derived ambient weirdness - " Pale Lights " and " The Place Lives " - I kind of expected all of Mount Eerie's sure-to-rule Ocean Roar to fit that template. But the title track has thrown that theory out the window. "Ocean Roar" sounds like lo-fi My Bloody Valentine, with Phil Elverum backed by a ghostly choir of female vocals. This year Phil Elverum will release two albums as Mount Eerie, his nom du plume since 2004. And they are two perfectly titled albums, too, if you know a thing about Mount Eerie: Up first is Clear Moon , followed soon by Ocean's Roar . While the real sonic driver behind "Distorted Cymbals" is the simple two-chord guitar strum that carries the track from start to finish, it's Phil Elverum's vocals that characterize this track. He sings with the same ethereal matter-of-factness that James Murphy sometimes touches when he's wearing his heart on his sleeve. But Elverum is no idolizing, copy-cat; he sounds more like a kid dreaming out-loud in his bedroom than a conscious synthesizer of his predecessors. It's that feeling of intimacy that makes tracks like "Distorted Cymbals" so warm and rewarding, as if, when clicking the play button, we've suddenly become privy [...]
