This year, Phil Elverum (aka Mount Eerie ) released two excellent LPs: May's Clear Moon and September's Ocean Roar . For those who haven't had a chance to listen, however, Elverum and company has a most succinct solution: listen to both albums at the same time. The Clear Moon / Ocean Roar 73 features condensed versions of both LPs on one vinyl single , with an album per side. The songs play at the same time, all on top of one another, resulting in the single [...]

Phil Elverum, AKA Mount Eerie , has broken off a second piece of his new album Ocean Roar , and it comes in the form "I Walked Home Beholding". It's a desolate track with a droning organ line that supports Elverum's lyrical discovery of abandonment. Stream it below. Ocean Roar , the companion album to May's Clear Moon , arrives September 4th via P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd. You can stream the title track here . In support of both releases, Elverum [...]

Chicagoans may remember a particularly harsh string of thunderstorms back in the summer of 2010. Ryan Graveface , sole proprietor of Graveface Records , certainly does; the intense rain flooded his stocking space, destroying a majority of his product . Thanks to an outpouring of support from friends and fans alike, Graveface recovered. Inspired by the love, he's looking to give something back with a new Charity Subscription Series. Graveface has put together a collection of a dozen 73 and three 103 singles from the likes of Xiu Xiu, Shearwater, Mike Watt, Monster Movie, Appleseed [...]

As previously reported , Phil Elverum, AKA Mount Eerie , will issue his second album of 2012, Ocean Roar , on September 4th via P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd. Today, the follow up to this year's Clear Moon finally has a first listen with a stream of its title track. While Elverum remains somber as ever, there's a hopeful vibe to the mix further exemplified by cajoling schoolchildren. It's delicate stuff, but it's also a promising start for the project's second go-around in 2012. Stream below. [soundcloud url=" http://api.soundcloud.com/trac ks/56632406" iframe="true" [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton I started a new job about two months ago, and the irony of working for a music tech company is that I'm actually listening to less new music. That needs to change, and I intend it to as I get settled into the new grind...but over the last couple months I've fallen behind. Here's some of the stuff I missed that is well worth spending more time with. Swear and Shake - These White Walls I had been waiting to [...]
Phil Elverum's songs are not going to show up on any feel-good summertime playlists. His music is far too sullen, in a quiet and intense way. Elverum released his latest album as Mount Eerie , Clear Moon , on Tuesday. Recorded in a vacated church in Anacortes, Washington, Clear Moon is another album made Elverum's way. There's no catchy hit song, no gimmicks, no compromise. Needless to say, he releases his albums on his own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun. You may even quibble whether these [...]

"II) Night's Taking" by Cold Mountain Child While on my internet hiatus, the most amazing thing happened, I started to receive bits of snail mail. The best piece would be Cold Mountain Child's Stillness Singing with a personal note documenting a brief moment in time during a grey Michigan day from Daniel. I first wrote about Cold Mountain Child in early August , and as just as I had predicted its been increasingly difficult to keep their album out of my stereo for very long. While I have never been very [...]

[ via ] Psychologists say you should limit yourself to one or, at most, two "traumatic" events at a single time. These include the classics (divorce, moving, and death) along with more modern variants (usually centered around the increasing demands and disappearing boundaries between our work and non-work lives). Currently I'm undergoing four, possibly five if you count the general confusion I have in what my exact aims for FRS are in regards to content, posting schedule, and, well, pretty much everything. Time is tight and stress is high, a volatile combination even [...]

Before I dig into the substance of today's review, allow me to apologize for the lateness of this post. We here at Citizen Dick Enterprises try to have our posts up bright and early each morning, so you can enjoy top-shelf music criticism with your milk and froot loops. Unfortunately, yesterday Cleveland was hit with a killer heat wave that rendered most of the city, including and especially myself, sluggish and unproductive. Today, the heat goes on, plus I slept in until 11:15 AM. In my defense on that last point, I am a college professor on summer vacation - [...]
