BIYL's favorite band appeared on the Conan O'Brien show last night. The appearance was a big hit, with Conan calling it 'madness!', and his website declaring that the band 'literally destroy[ed] the stage with rock!'. They performed 'Whirring', and while it wasn't quite the 7-minute opus of the album, they did manage to jam out with an extended coda. Worth watching just for the reaction to Rhydian's kick drum headstand! I also wanted to take a moment to say how proud we are of the band, and how pleased we are to see how far they've come in [...]

I'm not a massive film buff - that's more Sean's domain - but this black comedy has really grabbed by the scruff of the neck and moved me! I stumbled upon it after a few friends recommended it to me. Sure, I knew I would be au fait with the plot built around a Welsh, working-class family coming to grips with their daughter having an Asian boyfriend. After watching a few minutes I realised it was something special. That the low budget film takes place almost entirely in a typical terraced house lends even more credence to the high quality acting [...]

If you watched SNL last night, you were treated to the dual threat of Anne Hathaway and Florence Welch. Anne contributed to one of the funniest episodes I've seen in years - seriously, her Katie Holmes impression was so solid I momentarily thought I was watching the actual Katie Holmes - and Florence Welch belted as hard as she could to make the most of what was likely her first impression on many American ears. I have no explanation to offer as to why she backed up by 3 Smurfs, but let's allow Florence her theatrical indulgences; it's just part [...]
I don't often swerve very far from introducing you all to new music. Here is an exception: I have got to know the guys behind this brilliant series via the world of the keypad. If you have not seen episodes 1-6 of this YouTube hit yet, you should. Comedy-wise, it reminds me very much of Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback . Equally, there are smatterings of influence from Curb Your Enthusiasm in the improvisation and use of real people throughout. Starring Welsh actor Jonathan Owen, this wry take on the murky waters of A&R men has me in stitches! [...]
Who would have thought we'd one day have a biopic on The Runaways starring the little girls from Panic Room and I Am Sam? Stewart & Fanning are really looking the part, now we just have to wait and see if they can act it, too. [See post to listen to audio] The Runaways - Cherry Bomb [See post to listen to audio] Joan Jett - Crimson & Clover (Tommy James Cover)

Spoilers ahead! The final season of Lost started out with a bang. After Juliet detonated the bomb, it appears the resulting explosion created two timelines - one where our heroes were thrust back into the present (2007 in the show's timeline) with no indications that their actions in the past changed anything, and one where the bomb neutralized the mysterious energy below the Swan and prevented the destruction of Flight 815. In this flash-sideways (what the producers are calling it), Flight 815 not only successfully lands at LAX, it also has a [...]
The Brits are taking place tonight (or probably right now - damn time difference), so I just thought I'd remind you of who's in the running and what's what. First up, we have the performances. There's been talk that Lady Gaga will be bounced to later in the broadcast because producers became irritated with her constant set changes, but we'll have to wait and see. They're probably hoping for the same thunder Gaga gave the Grammys last month. Lady Gaga - "Dance in the Dark"/"Telephone" Cheryl Cole - "Fight For This Love" Kasabian [...]
Perhaps another gem from director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums), The Fantastic Mr. Fox opens on November 13th (hey, that's tomorrow night...). Based on the book by Roald Dahl, Mr. Fox features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman. If you are going to see the movie, let us know what you think in the comments!
"I do believe I'm going to strangle someone. By accident." I never thought I'd actually like something with Taylor Swift in it... or that had anything to do with Twilight. Proved me wrong, SNL. Proved me wrong. Check it out on Hulu:

NETFLIX | PURCHASE If there is one thing we're good at here at A&SB is waiting a really long time for a movie to make its way to Netflix and then adding it to our Queue, getting it delivered to our houses and then losing the DVD under our couch for 2 weeks. REALLY good at that. I showed off this skill recently when I rented the movie Son of Rambow a year after it came out. After blowing the dust off of the envelope, I proceeded to sit back and watch [...]

NETFLIX | PURCHASE Have you ever thought to yourself "I could do this for a living" while you were playing a game of Scrabble ? If you're like most people you probably haven't. Word Wars is an eye opening film that follows the lives of several individuals who are obsessed with the game of Scrabble. So obsessed, in fact, that some live in near poverty conditions taking part-time, low wage jobs so they have enough time to memorize lists of words that can [...]

NETFLIX | PURCHASE Red Sox vs Yankees, Chevy vs Ford, Ali vs Frazier, and of course Steve Wiebe vs Billy Mitchell. Few rivalries have been as intense and stood the test of time. King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters ( trailer ) is like watching a voyage back in time to a place where home game consoles were non existent and the dark video game arcades reigned as kings. TKOK takes a look at the [...]
I am here reporting live at Times Square in New York and it is pandemonium! People weeping openly in the streets, long embraces between strangers, spontaneous kissing and cheers that are ringing off the concrete pillars that surround us and echo throughout the labyrinth streets of the city. This is truly a breathtaking moment which I will never forget. http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/06 /details-on-futurama-returning -to-comedy-central-.html

PURCHASE | NETFLIX | WEBSITE We don't want to come off as a bunch of nerds when talking about Helvetica , a documetary film by Gary Hustwit. That will be hard though, primarily because most people invision this film as a simple homage to a common typeface that you find on your computer. Don't judge us! But we insist that you open your mind (and DVD player) up to this documentary. What we found while watching Helvetica was not just history of a font, but a [...]
