Blubell is a brazilian singer and composer who grew up in São Paulo and since 2006 has a solo career. Before that, she was part of a few bands, made special features in shows of the Brazilian big band Funk Como Le Gusta, and borrowed her voice to jingles for TV commercials. Her first album - Slow Motion Ballet - released independently in 2006, brought only songs written by the composer, except for a version of “Junk”, by Paul McCartney. Slow Motion Ballet was well received by the critics in newspapers such as Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo [...]

"Histórias de Canções – Chico Buarque" and "Histórias de canções – Tom Jobim" are books that give a detailed history of each of the songs done by Chico Buarque and Antonio Carlos Jobim . Written by Luiz Roberto Oliveira and Wagner Man, they will be release together in a box set from LeYa publishing.

Três Valetes e uma Dama is a group based in bossa nova’s motherland of Rio De Janeiro. The quartet is comprised of Mariana Mello (Drums and Vocals), Pedro Rodriguez (Percussion and Vocals), Diego Moreira (Guitar and Vocals) and Thiago Gama (Cavaco and Mandolin). As the name suggests (translates to three jacks and a queen in English) the band is comprised of 3 men and one lady. However, the name may take a doubly meaning as they appear to be jacks of all trades, performing bossa nova, choro, samba and forró. Naturally, we will focus on bossa nova. Below is a [...]

It’s a simple track really, instrumental and thus without a single lyric...unless you count Sabrina's whispers. But I find it incredibly soothing after a long day of work. Chilled, rhythmic, head-bobbing stuff. It goes brilliantly with a glass of chilled wine or whatever else you serve yourself to unwind. You can find Equilibria (Instrumental) on singer-songwriter Sabrina Malheiros album Vibrasons (which we talked about here ), a collection of the Brazilian’s songs from her debut effort (also named Equilibria) remixed by various DJs. Equilibria (Instrumental), however, doesn't list a single DJ as a [...]

Listen to Gold Panda 's two new songs "Mountain" and "Financial District" below. U.K. producer Gold Panda is back with two new songs and a video, to make us feel extra super special. Both of these tracks will appear on a new 73 single released in June or if you're impatient, you can download them today. To my knowledge these are the first new tracks that aren't remixes since last year's "MPB" , though I'm sure I could've [...]

Photo by Live PA Festival Kassin is a stalwart in Brazil’s MPB music scene. One of the country’s best modern producers, his work can be heard in the music of such familiar faces as Vanessa da Mata, Bebel Gilberto, Marisa Monte, and others. He’s like an audiophile King Midas – everything he produces turns to aural gold. Thus, it’d be a bit unfair to try to squeeze Kassin’s career, which spans over two decades, into a few blog post lines. I’d have to delve, in detail, into his work with [...]

Sunday nights are always a good time for exploring new music. I was in the mood for something relaxed and flowing, and Moça Bonita by Penna Firme fits the bill perfectly. I was introduced to this Brazilian artist by Henrique, the one of the minds behind Zarpante . Penna Firme's samba is light, modern, and urbane; it's very easy to listen and goes down splendidly. The album, Levando a Vida Assim, is Penna's first and is available for free download over on Musicoteca's website . Among the standout tracks, besides the contagious Moça Bonita, are the excellent Sonho [...]

The whole world is wondering (or should be wondering): "What's coming out of Rio?" A better question might be, "what hasn't been coming out of Rio?" While the city - Brazil's second largest, after Sao Paulo - does not possess the deep, immediate Afro-Brazilian musical roots one more often associates with Bahia, its music is unmistakably grounded in those same Afro-Portuguese strains that define the country's musical DNA. I could spend a lifetime talking about Bahian genres - really, they're more like the genres of Brazil itself due to the infusion of African strains in its music - [...]

Mariana Aydar, by Khadija Alves I found out about her and that beautiful, assured voice of hers in the most random of places: my Last.fm profile, which I visit maybe twice a month on a good month. So my ‘discovery’ of this stellar Brazilian singer was due to a bot on Last.fm telling me I might like her music. I clicked on the link and, two albums later, I owe that bot a huge thank you. Mariana Aydar is part of the resurgence of innovative MPB singers (neo MPB/nu MPB [...]

Tiê is among my favorite musical discoveries of this year. I fell in love not only with her music but with her the manner with which she approaches her music, the honesty and introspection of her lyrics, and the intimate nature with which she invites us to share her compositions. So I was quite excited to hear her sophomore album, A Coruja e o Coração. However I have to say that after several listens I wasn’t quite as impressed; the magic of Sweet Jardim just wasn’t there for me. Perhaps it was always going to be an uphill battle to [...]
