Yesterday, Montreal was teased by the short-lived presence of a familiar celestial figure. Personally, I was gettin' my tan on as I walked to school, coat slung over my right shoulder: there's nothing like the feeling of el sol toasting the back of your neck, all the while gleaming over a melting scenery left by months of snow and sub-zero temperatures. Brazilian airs whistled out of my lips, ecstatic to poke out of their hibernation. And then night came. Rain. [...]

Lucas Santtana, por Revistanoize I really like this guy, the intricate simplicity of his music, the texture and sound of his combination of voice and guitar. I started listening to Lucas Santtana after a tip from Paula Carvalho at Oi Música , and was struck by his originality and the way he deconstructs the use of the ubiquitous guitar in Brazilian music. My introduction to Lucas Santtana's interpretation of Brazilian music was Sem Nostalgia, already his fourth studio album. Sem Nostalgia is a luscious collection of intriguing music and a [...]

Tulipa Ruíz, by Gerardo Lazzari You press play on the song Efêmera and a softly strummed guitar greets your expectant eardrums, followed by a somewhat laid back percussionist doing his thing, and then that voice. That beautiful, exquisite voice. The voice comes from a body that belongs to a woman that goes by the name of Tulipa Ruíz, and she's Brazil's newest MBP sensation, shooting to prominence following well-received and critically acclaimed live performances. Her album was an instant success, as her fans were left captivated with her witty lyrics, simple [...]

Read this first / Leia isto primeiro 10. Angolan Sound Experience, by Various Artists (Angola) I loved the idea and the concept behind this album , but more than that, Totó's version of the Angolan classic 'Muxima' by itself would have guaranteed this two-disc album a place on this list. All jokes aside, at at time when popular pre-independence Angolan music is on a global resurgence, it's nice to see the in-house musicians [...]

Bicicletas, Bolos e Outras Alegrias is Vanessa da Mata’s fourth studio album and one of the best Lusophone records I’ve heard all year. Once again, the production quality on this album is top notch, even more so than Sim, and listening to them on quality headphones is an experience in and of itself. It’s often said that MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) is a bit stale and repetitive but this is one of those albums that comes out every six months or so and stuns us all. It highlights Vanessa’s uniqueness and freedom in a way that Sim was unable to [...]

Diciannove brani imperdibili [...]

Clear blue skies and a breeze here in Istanbul, so we're back to Brasilian music for the time being. A selection including Airto Moreira's cover of Hermeto Pascoal's Bebe . Ary Barroso's Lá Vem A Baiana from his 1958 album with Dorival Caymmi, Baden Powell's version of Vinicius ' Canto De Xangô, first song on undomondo from the late bossa nova and MPB queen Nara Leão and a reprise for Quarteto em Cy. Get a soft drink, and enjoy. Image by honeyuck on flickr Airto Moreira - [...]

Brazilian singer-songwriter Luisa Maita made her debut North American performance this past Wednesday, November 3rd at SoHo's famous SOBs (Sounds of Brazil) and the word of the night was "subtle". She took the stage with three musicians - a guitarist, bassist, and drummer - which, at first glance, seemed a bit bare. The sheer volume and depth that her debut, Lero-Lero , carries suggested a much larger band would be accompanying her, but the performance given from the talented musicians suggested nothing was missing. Maita opened the [...]

Perhaps the quality of Maria Rita's voice will betray her immediate lineage, perhaps not. But the daughter of the legendary Elis Regina (and pianist César Camargo Mariano ) can certainly hold her own as an artistic talent without being compared to her mother. Educated at NYU, Maria Rita first made her stamp on international 'world music' with the release of her eponymous album in 2003, her most successful to date (nominated for a Latin Grammy Award as Album of the Year) and from where the track Cara Valente below comes from. Recently however [...]

One image is worth a thousand words...I'll let the images and the music speak for themselves.

It must be something in the water. How else do you explain São Paulo's ability to inspire and create great musician after great musican? Maria Gadú's been my latest infatuation, courtesy of a tip from my good friend Renzo. The song he sent me was Shimbalaiê, a hit single from Maria's debut album and a song she apparently composed when she was only 10 years old. 30 seconds into it and I was sold on this promising 23-year-old that now calls Rio de Janeiro her home. And that was before I listened to Lounge, a sensual, laid-back downtempo sundowner that [...]

Hardly a day goes by anymore that I don't listen to Seu Jorge. What an artist. Whether it be on the silver screen or on stage, Mané Galinha or the front man for the wildly successful Seu Jorge & Almaz project, the man just keeps reinventing himself. His versatility and scope is mesmerizing: on one album he is doing a heartfelt Portuguese rendition of a David Bowie track, while on the next he is crooning Michael Jackson's Rock With You. But perhaps my favorite Seu Jorge jam is Em Nagoya Eu Vi Eriko, from his album 'Carolina'. It [...]

What a beautiful story she has become. I first featured Luísa Maita back in June, before her CD was released by Cumbancha Discovery . Since then, Luísa's music has exploded in popularity among lusophone music lovers, 'world music' fans, and the public in general. Evidently, I wasn't the only one to be enamored by her sultry voice and her exciting musicality. The girl from São Paulo reached #1 on iTunes Latin charts, #1 on Amazon Latin bestseller charts, and American NPR (National Public Radio) called her the "new voice of Brazil." I've devoured her [...]

Sifting through great Brazilian records from yesteryear I came across a stunning 15-track album by Lô Borges. My list of favorite Brazilian artists is growing at a steady rate, and Lô Borges, like the likes of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, never lets me down. Although it’s from 1972, the self-titled LP sounds like it could be fresh off the press, but I suppose the steadfast classiness should have been a tip-off that it’s almost forty years old. Oddly enough, I was first introduced to Lô Borges quite anachronistically by Phoenix with their Kitsune Tabloid release last year. [...]
Her CD gets better with age and it's become a mainstay for those quiet nights or relaxing days. Her voice seduces softly and if it weren't enough she's quite nice to look at as well. According to Luísa, 'Alento' talks about the daily grind in São Paulo and how Paulistas wake up early everyday to chase their dreams. The video is an ode to São Paulo.

If there was ever a perfect psychedelic soul samba summer album, Seu Jorge & Almaz is damn well near it. It's a collaboration between Seu Jorge , Nação Zumbi collective Pupillo (drums) and Lúcio Maia (guitarist), along with António Pinto on bass. Each of the four are excellent, very well respected artists in their own right, and their on-studio chemistry on this album, their first together, is palpable. Seu Jorge is already known as one of the best voices in Brazil right now, with his deep baritone instantly recognized by anyone with an inkling of interest in contemporary MPB. [...]
