Bind Pilot & The Barr Brothers / Mr. Smalls / 2.10.2012 / Doors 7:00 / $13.50 Words by Jim It's always fun to catch a band around town and see them return a few years later, a few years older, and a few fans stronger. Case in point: Blind Pilot . I caught them back in 2009 when they played with (the seriously awesome) Laura Veirs at Club Cafe. Fast forward three years later, the band has a new album and they're playing at [...]

Words, videos and photos by Brendan Sullivan This past year, I witnessed somewhere between 80 and 90 concerts, depending on your definition of what qualifies as a "concert" and also on my list-making abilities and forgetfulness. I can't think of any that I genuinely hated. I can think of some that were lackluster, some that I had high hopes for that let me down, some that were fun at the time but leave me with nothing stellar to write about now, and some that were really good but didn't quite make the grade. [...]

Cold War Kids are an indie rock band from Fullerton, California, USA. Band members are Nathan Willett (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Jonnie Russell (guitar, vocals, percussion), Matt Maust (bass guitar) and Matt Aveiro (drums). According to Songfacts, Matt Maust came up with the band's name. He was inspired by a trip to Eastern Europe where he came across a big park where they'd dumped statues that had been removed after Communism fell. Within the park he found a playground and being in that environment the phrase 'Cold War Kids' popped into his head. The band is currently touring in [...]

Fitz & The Tantrums with Walk The Moon / Mr. Small's / 11.07.2011 / 8:00 PM / $20 Words by Jim If you don't know who Fitz & The Trantrums are, well, come on! Where have you been? Ok, whatever. Just know that I'm not entirely happy with you right now. If you have heard of them, then great job, but don't get too cocky. They're not hard to recognize and chances are, when you heard one of their songs on the radio, you were [...]
PHANTOGRAM is a trip-hop/psych-pop duo which formed in 2007 in Saratoga Springs, New York, United States. The band consists of Joshua Carter (guitar, vocals) and Sarah Barthel (vocals, keyboards). Their music can be described as a culmination of unique street beat rhythms, psychedelic melodies and organic textures. The band practices and writes music in an out-of-town farm called Harmony Lodge. Barthel and Carter were friends since junior high school. Barthel pursued a visual arts degree while Carter formed the experimental band Grand Habit. In the Summer of 2007 they reunited and worked on finishing some beat ideas Carter [...]

Cold War Kids, with Young Man / Mr. Small's / 11.05.2011 / 8:00 PM / $20 Words by Jim Sometimes you just need to jam it out, man. The house is yours. Maybe it's Friday (but it doesn't have to be). Turn the fucking speakers up and just do it. Pull out dance moves that your girlfriend or boyfriend has never ever seen, you know, the ones you'd only attempt in public if six beers deep. It's about freedom and letting the music wash over you. It's about [...]
Future Islands' "On the Water" comes out 10/11 and the band plays Mr. Smalls on October 26th. "Balance" is the first single from their upcoming release with a video from Jay Buim. Future Islands (formed 2006) is a synthpop band based in Baltimore, Maryland. They are often associated with (and tour with) bands affiliated with Wham City. These include Videohippos, Santa Dads, Blood Baby, OCDJ, Adventure, Dan Deacon, Weekends (band), Double Dagger, as well and others. The band met and formed in Greenville, NC while studying art at East Carolina University. At first it was Art [...]

Future Islands, with Ed Schrader's Music Beat and Javelin / Mr. Small's / 10.26.2011 / 8:00 / $12 Words by Brendan A Future Islands show is as much about theatre as it is music. I'm not saying they stage mini plays or anything like that, but there's definitely a heavy aura of artistic performance associated with their stage presence. In particular, singer Samuel Herring jumps around, pounds his chest, glares at the crowd, shouts to the heavens ... It's fucking powerful, I assure you. You have [...]

Hey. How's it going? Good, great. So, yeah, you might be new here. Maybe you're a freshman at Pitt or CMU or somewhere else. That's terrific and we applaud your good choice in city. But maybe you're not exactly new here, and you're finding yourself ready to explore the town and uncover it's wonders. You're like a goddamn pearl diver, ready to take the plunge and come up for air with a little bit of treasure. Well, we're here to help you with that whole situation. It could definitely seem like a staggering endeavor. We understand. We went through it [...]

Langhorne Slim & The Law, with Matrimony / Mr. Small's / 10.04.2011 / 8:00 / $13 Words by Vicki I don't watch a lot of music videos nowadays, besides the Lady Gaga extravaganzas, but I was first introduced to Langhorne Slim via music video. Watch, and meet me on the other side: Langhorne Slim , "Restless" . Intrigued? I certainly was, and not just by the weird log dude, but by Mr. Slim's rough, scratchy voice and [...]

Words by Brendan / Photo by Will Gunther It was the rowdiest of concerts, it was the dreamiest of concerts. It was the age of crowd-surfing, it was the age of sitting attentively. It was the epoch of loud guitars and raucous crowd antics, it was the epoch of dreamy pop sounds and beautiful voices and a quiet audience. Okay, I'm no Dickens, obviously, but I don't know a short, single word for "loud guitars and raucous crowd antics". If I had to propose one, though, it would be " Black Lips -itude". And [...]

Words by Vicki / Photos by Julie Van Wassen When I bought my ticket to Foster the People back in June, there was a definite buzz surrounding the band. In the weeks leading up to the show, every time I listened to mainstream radio for more than 10 minutes, I inevitably heard their single, "Pumped Up Kicks." During this time, the band, made up of Mark Foster, Mark Pontius, and Cubbie Fink, toured relentlessly, hit the festival circuit, and made appearances on late night TV. Then they were nominated [...]

Photo courtesy of Hugh Twyman Words by Brendan It's another one of those weekends coming up. I bet not, because there are plenty of choices for live music in the next few days, you're bound to find something you like. Stream some mp3s right off the bat and read [...]

Smith Westerns / Mr. Small's / 06.10.2011 / Doors 7:00 / $12 Words by Brendan I don't think the word "precocious" gets thrown around a lot in indie rock circles. It's hard to imagine any band's career lasting long enough so that the term could even be applied retrospectively. And who wants to be that dude who was soooo wrong about saying that band was gonna go places and then they totally didn't man, am I right? Whatever. Smith Westerns [...]

Words by Brendan. Pittsburgh photo courtesy of Hugh Twyman Summer concert season is getting underway, and this weekend is perfect evidence of that. There are plenty of options and we're sure you'll find a show you'll want to see. You might even find too many! Stream some songs right here and read up on the bands hitting stages all over town in the next few days. And wish that you had a teleporter and a time machine to make it to all of them. Nik [...]
